Simon was still feeling a little sick from the dream he’d woken up from that morning. He’d been taken by Valentine, Clary and, possibly, Jace’s father and been imprisoned on a ship. Jace had eventually found his way inside as well and considering Simon hadn’t eaten in sometime, he’d had to drink from Jace. The thought of drinking blood was vomit inducing at any time, but when he thought about the fact that it was Jace, who Simon still wasn’t entirely sure about, it was even worse.
He’d thought about texting Clary upon waking up, but Jace was Clary’s boyfriend and he didn’t think that he could tell her how gross it had been to drink Jace’s blood, so instead, he’d gotten dressed and decided to make his way over to Baxter’s where Izzy worked. For some reason, he felt like he could talk to her. He still got a little tongue tied around her, what guy wouldn’t, but he could talk to her and right now he needed to talk to someone.
The moment Izzy laid eyes on Simon she knew something was wrong, whether it was dream related or not she wasn’t sure but she told the girls she was taking a break and made her way over to him.
“No offence but you look like you need a coffee, a cookie and someone to listen” she told him, squeezing his shoulder, “Take a seat in the corner and I’ll be right over”
Simon hadn’t expected Isabelle to approach him so quickly, but Simon wasn’t about to disagree with her. He’d seen her fight in the dreams and he didn’t want to end up on her bad side, “Yeah, alright.” He could feel his cheeks flush slightly as she squeezed his shoulder, but he made himself turned and head towards the booth in the corner to wait for her.
While they weren’t as close here as they were in the dreams Izzy counted him among her friends and she’d been lucky enough to be out by the counter when she’d seen him come in. She grabbed coffees and cookies and brought everything over for the both of them. “So, what’s up?” she asked as she sat opposite him.
“So you’re telling me that in order to get a pretty girl to bring me coffee and cookies, I just have to come in looking like something is bothering me?” Simon asked, smirking, not even realizing that he’d just called Isabelle pretty. It was true of course, but Simon wasn’t the type of guy who would just come out and tell a girl that she was pretty; at least not without blushing furiously while doing it.
“Sssshh not so loud otherwise every guy is going to catch on” she grinned, his compliment adding to her happy mood. He was a sweet guy that much was obvious. And he was a close friend of Clary’s which meant he was automatically important to Izzy too.
Simon laughed and leaned forward a little, lowering his voice, “Okay, it’ll be our little secret then,” Was he flirting with Izzy? If he was, it was a surprise to him, because he certainly hadn’t come to Baxters with that intention, but it was hard not to when it came to Izzy. “Anyway, so have you dreamt about me...becoming a vampire?” He wasn’t entirely sure where Izzy was in her dreams and he also didn’t want to shock her, but something told him that she wouldn’t be too surprised by this; considering the things that lived in their dream world.
Izzy didn’t mind flirting, she was pretty good at it actually and the way Simon did it was sweet and not as creepy or sleazy as some guys she’d known in the past. She nodded, “Yep I’m past that part” she told him, “Bit of a shock huh?”
"A shock is an understatement. I mean, one of my dreams ended with me going to the hotel, so I knew nothing good could of that." Simon said, taking a sip of his coffee, "I think the more shocking part though was having to dig my way out of my grave." That had been pretty terrifying, because who didn't have a fear of being buried alive? Sure Simon technically hadn't been alive in the dream, but having watched it happen felt like he'd been buried alive.
“Ah yeah, that’s an unpleasant little detail they don’t really advertise too much” Izzy said with a nod, “I am sorry you had to go through that. I’d say it gets better but I think the safest thing to say would be that it gets complicated”
“Yeah, pretty sure it already got complicated. I mean, unless getting kidnapped by a crazy person and having to drink Jace’s blood is getting better.” Simon made a face at the thought of drinking Jace’s blood. It almost caused him to lose his appetite for the cookies that Izzy had brought over, but he’d taken a liking to pretty much anything at Baxter’s, so he wasn’t going to not eat the cookies.
Izzy couldn’t help chuckling at that, “Ah yes. Still he’s not the worst option right? I mean dying of blood starvation would have been pretty awful” she pointed out. Baxter’s was kind of an addiction but since it kept Izzy in a job she was pretty much happy to get everybody she knew addicted.
“I guess, but still. Ugh.” Simon made another face before taking a sip of his coffee, “I still don’t see what Clary sees in him.” Simon’s statements had little to do with the feelings he’d had for Clary and more to do with the simple fact that he just didn’t understand how someone like Clary could fall for a guy who appeared to be as into himself as Jace was. Sure, Simon barely knew Jace, but he’d talked to him a few times now on the net and on more than one occasion conversations with Jace had made his head hurt. The Independence Day one in particular.
“She loves him and he’s not that bad once you get to know him. He’s arrogant sure but he has a good heart” Izzy said, she loved Jace like she did her family, saw him as another brother. She figured that Simon’s comments were coming as a result of his crush on Clary, it didn’t enter her head that it might not be.
“Arrogant is one way of putting it.” Simon adjusted his glasses, “But enough about Jace,” He realized that bad mouthing Jace could potentially backfire on him since Izzy was Jace’s friend and the last thing he wanted was for Izzy to dislike him for his opinions on Jace or for it to get back to Clary. “So how come you guys didn’t tell me before that I’d turn into a vampire in the dreams?” Not that he would have believed them if he had told them.
Jace was Izzy’s friend and she knew, just like in the dreams, Simon wasn’t overly enamoured with him. “Ah well, I didn’t think you’d believe us. And it isn’t the easiest thing to bring up” she added, it hadn’t really felt like her place either. When it came to Simon she allowed Clary to take the lead.
Simon nodded, “Yeah, you’re right. I wouldn’t have believed you. I mean, I still don’t believe it all and I’ve been dreaming it.” Sometimes he was convinced that someone was playing some giant joke on him, cause how could any of this be real? “Did you believe it all when you started dreaming?”
“Mostly” she shrugged, “I couldn’t really not believe it when the runes appeared” she didn’t hide them, they marked her skin just as they did in the dreams and for the most part people thought she liked tattoos. “And now I pretty much have all the skills of a shadowhunter too”
“So, they just showed up? Like out of nowhere?” It sounded so strange to think that Izzy could go to bed one night with clear skin and wake up with what was more or less a tattoo. “And do they actually work? I mean, Runes have certain powers, right?” He didn’t know too much about the whole Shadowhunter thing, but in the dreams he’d gathered enough to understand.
“I have one actual tattoo, it’s on my back and I copied it from Alec but yeah not long after Jace’s stele appeared I got a rune mark so then we decided to try the stele on our skin and more appeared too” Izzy smiled, it had been a pretty weird combination of dream coming true and her and Jace playing with the stele but it had worked. “The runes work” she nodded, “Extra speed, strength, stamina and all that”
Simon couldn’t help but wonder what exactly Isabelle had gotten tattooed on her back and wondered if he’d ever see it. He’d thought about getting a tattoo before, but had never found anything he’d be willing to get put on his body for the rest of his life, “Do they last forever or do they wear off?” He had seen them applying Runes in the dreams and assumed that if they lasted forever they’d eventually run out of space on their bodies for them and if they lasted forever why would they need to reapply them when needed like he’d seen them do before.
“They wear off depending on use” Izzy said, “So ones we use a lot need reapplying a lot. They just fade and look a little like scars” she explained, “and obviously you feel that they aren't as effective anymore”
Simon nodded as he listened to Izzy explain the way the Runes worked, “It’s still pretty crazy though. I mean, how can dreams do stuff to us?” He didn’t want to think of what the dreams could possibly do to him. The last thing he needed was to become a vampire. He really didn’t like the thought of drinking blood, “I mean, my dreams back home never came true.” Which was evidenced by the fact that he and Clary had never dated, but he was over that now. Now that he’d come clean to Clary about his past feelings. “Do you ever wish that the dreams were just dreams?”
“Honestly I've never thought too much about how” she admitted, it was just one of those things. “Obviously something about this place is special because back home my dreams were normal too” she added. She thought for a moment before shaking her head, “Not really. They've given me good things and I like them mostly”
“Well, I guess one of us would end up liking them,” Simon wasn’t exactly a big fan of his dreams and he didn’t think they were going to get much better. “Well, more than one of us, cause I’m pretty sure Clary likes them too.” He took another sip of his coffee, “But just as long as I don’t become a vampire, I’ll be fine.” Simon’s tone was light, showing that he was only kidding, because after all, vampires didn’t exist. Simon had yet to realize that there were other people who dreamt about being vampires and had actually turned into one.
“Then we will all hope for that not to happen” Izzy said though she had little confidence, most people she knew gained their dream skills and traits. Vampirism among them, she could only hope that if or when it happened Simon would come to them and not panic too much.
It was then that Simon remembered that Izzy was actually working and they weren’t just sitting and talking as friends, “Oh hey, I should let you get back to work. Wouldn’t want your boss to come in and find you sitting around.” Simon really appreciated Izzy taking time out to sit and listen to him and it just helped him like her more.
Izzy laughed, “Don’t worry, Audrey isn't in today so I am the boss but I should set a good example” she added, “It was good to see you Simon” she smiled before she stood.
Simon nodded, “It was good to see you too, Izzy. And thanks.” He smiled at her as he got too his feet, happy that there was someone else he could talk to other than Clary. He could talk to Clary about everything, but sometimes talking to someone else was good too and Izzy was becoming that person. “I’ll talk to you again soon.”
Izzy would happily become that person for Simon, she knew that she found it comforting to talk to those who understood the dreams so she imagined it would be the same for Simon. “You better” she told him with a wink giving him a quick hug before returning to work.
