It had been a very deep, peaceful sleep for Caroline. All that pampering wore her out, not to mention the activities after. Okay so it was probably more the activities that had followed back at Peeta’s place. The point was the girl had been exhausted. She slept pretty much throughout the entire night without any Mystic Falls dreams, however the she woke with a start.
It was the sound of Peeta’s heartbeat that woke her, his pulse, tempting her for just one little bite. When was the last time she had eaten? Peeta had made her a cake and they had dinner, but that didn’t count. The last time she had blood was…
Holy shit.
It was for breakfast the previous morning. Almost 24 hours. Caroline had never gone that long before. She could hear the blood coursing through his veins. Before she knew what was happening her fangs popped out, the rest of her vampire features taking over her face.
No. She was not going to bite Peeta. She needed to get away.
Peeta would probably never admit how much he actually enjoyed going to spa to anyone except for Caroline, but it had been something he needed. Just a day to relax and not think about all the stress that had happened in the past couple weeks. It also helped that Caroline was there and she had the tendency to keep things in a positive mood, which was a big help. It also didn’t hurt that they continued their fun together throughout the evening.
Sleeping like the dead was something Peeta was usually able to accomplish, but his body clock must have decided he had gotten enough sleep because it was Caroline waking up that roused him. He let out a bit of a groan as he rolled over towards Caroline and slowly opened his eyes. His features took on a confused expression when she came into focus, “What’s with your face?”
How the hell was she going to explain this? She hadn’t told Peeta what she was yet. Which was precisely why she hadn’t eaten. She inched away from Peeta, because being close to him was not good. He was food at the moment. Not a guy she had just slept with.
“I’m hungry,” Caroline explained her voice strained, pained even as she sat up wrapping the sheet around her. It was taking all her control to not dive in for a snack. She turned her face, her whole body, away from him. “I need to eat.”
The whole demeanor change confused him even further and his brow furrowed as he watched her actions. If she was hungry then it would be a simple solution to help her out and he sat up a little bit in the bed, “I can make you some breakfast if you want me to. I’ve got leftover pastries from the shop. Would that help?” He wasn’t sure what she was hungry for, and certainly didn’t know it was for blood, but he was more than willing to help her out if needed.
Eat wasn’t exactly the right word. It was more like she needed to drink. But saying that Peeta wouldn’t understand. And she didn’t have any blood bags or anything with her. She needed to get home. “No!” Caroline snapped both to Peeta’s question and at the thought of the no blood bags around.
Ugh.
She took a deep breath to try and get her face back to normal but it didn’t work. It did at least calm her a bit. “I have to go home,” she managed to get out quickly getting up from the bed and collecting her clothing so she could get dressed. “Where’s my bra?” Whatever she could go without she just needed to get out of there.
“Woah,” he breathed when she snapped at him and his eyes widened just slightly. Well, someone was certainly awful at mornings and exceptionally hangry. He tossed the covers off of himself and climbed out of the bed. Apparently what he had to offer wasn’t the best of ideas, but it didn’t meant that she had to leave immediately.
He managed to find her bra up on the top of his dresser and he brought over to her, “You don’t have to leave. Let me help you. I’m not quite sure what’s going on right now.” It was probably the most honest thing he had said this early in the morning, but he just wanted to know if he could help her, as he handed the bra over to her.
Caroline snatched her bra then jumped back from him. “Stay back,” she didn’t snap this time but her tone wasn’t sweet like usual, there was also a hint of fear there. She got a good distance away from him, as far as she could in the room. She should have just taken off with her vampire speed, left him there alone and confused but that felt wrong. And she could control her hunger for a little bit longer. She took another deep breath focussing on anything but the sound of Peeta’s pulse, and her vampire features faded, face returning to normal. There. That was slightly better.
“I guess it’s time I told you,” Caroline began, still keeping her distance from him. “I’m a vampire.”
This was the most awkward morning after that he had ever experienced as he watched her with a careful look. He couldn’t rationalize anything that she was doing with anything he had done. It just didn’t make much sense, but her face was starting to go back to normal. That had to be a good thing, right? The confusion was written on his face, but then she dropped the ultimate bomb.
“You’re a wh-- those exist?” his mind was starting to spin as he tried to make sense of what she was telling him. Vampires were real and Caroline was one of them. And she must be super hungry or found him delicious because that face was almost like a scene out of Buffy.
It wasn’t exactly the best morning after Caroline had ever experienced either. In fact she would probably agree with Peeta that it was the most awkward. It wasn’t like she often woke up with a practically uncontrollable craving to snack on her sexual partners. She had only had one other one since she turned and he knew what she was the whole time so the going without feeding issue never happened.
Duh, Peeta. Of course vampires existed. This was the OC after all. It was crawling with magic, and witches and vampires. But she didn’t say any of that. For one it was rude, but also she was focussing her energy on remaining in control. Keep her thoughts off his blood. So instead she just slowly nodded her head. “Yes, we exist,” she said quietly. “The dreams changed me.”
“Well, is your face changing because you’re hungry? Do you need my blood or something?” Peeta was confused about what to do. Did he want to give her his blood? Would it hurt? Would it affect him in the long run? They had only gone out a couple of times and it seemed like a far more intimate thing than they had done earlier.
“Yes. I mean no. Ugh.” Caroline turned away from him putting her bra on. “Yes, I’m hungry,” she clarified picking her panties up off the ground and slipping those back on before she turned to face him again. “No I don’t need your blood.” She wasn’t like that. She didn’t make a habit of feeding on humans (the week her humanity was off didn’t count). “I have blood bags at home.”
“You’re hungry and you’re going to try and make it all the way back home? Just feed from me. You can do it on my wrist or something right?” Alright, maybe Peeta didn’t ever think things through properly, but he wanted Caroline to be okay. The idea of sending her off while flickering between human and vampire didn’t seem like a good idea. There was also a part of him that didn’t want her to leave yet.
Wait. What? She hadn’t been expecting Peeta to suggest that. As much as she wanted to say no. To be the better person, be good vampire and not give into her instincts. She couldn’t. She was hungry and the thought of having to go all the way home. If he was really offering…
“Are you sure?” she asked softly taking a small step towards him, vampire features already taking over her face again at the idea.
When she asked he took a step forward and looked her straight in the eye, “Do you promise not to kill me?” It was a simple question and he wanted an answer. He wasn’t sure how strong she would be, but he knew that he may stand a bit of a chance if he needed to try and get her away from him.
Caroline was almost insulted by his question. Of course she wouldn’t kill him. But then she remembered this was all new for him. And the fact that he had just learned vampires were real and was still willing to let her feed on him, well it was sweet. “I promise.”
“Okay,” he nodded solemnly before moving to sit on the bed because it seemed weird to stand up while she drank his blood. Especially if he suddenly got faint and he didn’t want to collapse on the floor. Once on the bed he held his wrist out to her and watched her, “This is the weirdest second date ever.”
Yeah those were exactly the words a girl wanted to hear. Though she couldn’t exactly blame him for the comment. It was pretty damn weird. Caroline went and sat down on the bed next to him. She glanced over at him one last time before taking his wrist in her hands, she brought it to her lips and bit into it. Her fangs punctured his skin, if her dreams were any indication that was probably the part that hurt the most. Then she was sucking his blood, not too much. Just enough to satisfy her hunger, even if she didn’t exactly want to stop. It tasted so much better from the vein than from a bag.
“Thanks,” Caroline said once she released his wrist. She licked the remaining blood off her lips. There puncture marks on his wrist were still bloody. “I can heal that, if you want.”
It certainly did hurt and he let out a bit of a gasp as he felt her fangs puncture his skin. This wasn’t what he was expecting, but it quickly turned into tolerable as she continued to feed on him. If someone had told him all the strange things that had happened to him this year he would have called them crazy, but the experiences just kept coming. He had to turn his face away because he didn’t enjoy the sight. After she spoke he turned back towards her and arched an eyebrow, “Do I want to know how?”
Now that Caroline was no longer starved she was pretty much back to herself. Well despite being a little embarrassed by the whole ordeal. Not exactly how she planned to tell Peeta she was a vampire. “Probably not,” she replied with a small smile, her face going back to normal. She knew perfectly well that some (okay most) people were grossed out at the thought of drinking her blood. “So you can just keep the mark from my fangs on your wrist. Nice reminder of the vampire you didn’t know you slept with.” She was joking now but seriously the tension needed to be broken.
“Good thing that Annie makes nice bracelets,” he knew what one he would probably wear over the wound and he got up to go grab some first aid supplies to stitch the wound, “Some girls leave hickies, but I get the one that literally bites.” He turned towards her once he stood up and leaned over to place a kiss on her forehead, “I still like you though.” At least he could reassure her of that and he padded across the floor towards the bathroom so he could clean himself up.
Well at least there was that. Most guys would probably be scared away by what had happened that morning. While Peeta was in the bathroom tending to his bite Caroline got up off the bed. However instead of continuing to get fully dressed like she had been intending to do a few minutes ago she just put on Peeta’s shirt then walked over to the bathroom herself leaning against the doorframe. “We should probably get you breakfast now,” with the blood loss and all food was a good thing. “Then we can continue what we were doing last night,” she smirked. Or she could leave, but it didn’t really seem like he wanted her to.
Well, his last girlfriend had a healing ability and could pull a sword out of her chest, so he honestly shouldn’t be surprised that vampires were a real thing. Once the wound was cleaned and his arm was wrapped up in bandages he turned towards her when she put on one of his shirts and stood in the door frame. “Are you going to attempt to cook?” he teased her a little before walking over to her and sliding his arms around her waist, kissing her neck, “Mmm, you look good in my shirt, by the way.”
Caroline laughed at his question, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Well I could,” her smile widened. “But you run the risk of me burning down your kitchen,” she had started a fire once before. She kissed the corner of his mouth. “Unless you want cereal,” she was a pro at that. Had the whole milk to cereal ratio down.
“What do you recommend for breakfast? Cereal is usually fine with me,” he answered with a chuckle. The idea of her burning down his kitchen was amusing, but certainly the last thing he wanted to happen. “I can probably make something if we have to, but if you are the cereal pro I will gladly let you handle that.
Considering Caroline had already eaten her breakfast she was fine with whatever Peeta wanted. She certainly wasn’t going to make him cook for her when she had just fed on him. Plus human food didn’t do much for her anyway.
“I’ll make you some cereal.” Instead of pulling away to head to the kitchen she gave him a real good morning kiss. He hadn’t exactly gotten one before in all the chaos. Smiling when she pulled away her hand moved down to grab his. “Come on,” she said pulling him out of the doorway. “Before we get too carried away.” Food first. Peeta needed it.
