If it wasn’t one thing, it was another for Jeremy whether it was in real life or the dreams. In real life he was dealing with Katherine now being a vampire and dating Damon and in the dreams, he was dealing with Bonnie being dead and being the only one who could see her ghost. It was all very frustrating and he wished that there was something he could do to make things less stressful. Unfortunately he knew that there was nothing he could do about Katherine and Damon aside from stake Damon and he didn’t think that that would go over well with his sister. As for the dreams all he could do was encourage Bonnie to let him tell Elena and Caroline what had happened to her instead of lying for her.
On top of all of that there was school. Surprisingly school was the least stressful thing he had going on in his life and he didn’t mind going cause he could forget some of the other stuff going on and look forward to going home to Myrcella. And now, knowing how to control his Hunter instincts, he was safe around Caroline, if he happened to run into her on campus. So while some things seemed out of control, other things in his life weren’t going too bad.
He had just gotten out of class and had another in about forty five; not enough time to leave campus and come back, so he’d found a bench outside and decided to start the assigned reading for his last class.
Caleb had been in Orange County for about three months now. He was beginning to actually settle in. Legitimate job, looking for an apartment, dating a girl. A girl he was considering having a real relationship - it wasn’t that Caleb never wanted a relationship. It was just that they didn’t work well with his lifestyle. But that was changing now. He was also fairly certain he had experienced those dreams everyone seemed to talk about. Only his were basically all about the girl he was already seeing. Hanna.
Since Caleb had finished all his work, he decided to take off early and meet Hanna after her classes. After arriving at the UCI campus he made his way towards Hanna’s class. However he was early, sitting down while he waited seemed like the best option. Caleb approached a bench where a guy was reading a book. “Cool if I sit here?” Considering the guy was reading he didn’t think he was waiting for someone to join him, but still.
“Yeah, go ahead.” Jeremy knew some people who were weirded out by sharing a bench or something with a stranger, but Jeremy thought that was pretty crazy in a place like school. There were more students than surfaces to sit on so sometimes one had to share them with someone they didn’t know. He moved his bag, which had been on the bench to the group to make room for the other guy, “I’m Jeremy, by the way.” He thought that it might be a little less awkward to share the bench if he at least introduced himself.
“Caleb,” he said as he sat down once Jeremy had moved his things out of the way. “Good book?” he asked raising a brow. He wasn’t sure if this Jeremy guy really wanted to talk but Caleb was bored and he had some time to kill before Hanna got out of class. Might as well strike up a conversation. He was still fairly new to the area and now that he decided to stick around he could use some acquaintances.
“Are any books for class good?” Jeremy said, closing the book with a thunk that most school books seemed to make when they were closed, “You go here?” It might have seemed like a dumb question to some people, but not everyone on campus actually attended classes at UCI. It was entirely likely that he was waiting for someone who was a student since they were outside and all.
Caleb shrugged. He had no idea. From what he remembered, they weren’t. But then he hadn’t done much of the reading before he dropped out of high school. Hanna seemed to enjoy it though. “No,” he replied to the second question. “My girlfriend does. Just waiting for her to get out of class.” He would have asked if Jeremy did, but with the class reading and all the answer seemed pretty obvious.
“Surprising her or does she know you’re waiting?” Jeremy asked, briefly wondering if maybe he knew Caleb’s girlfriend. He wasn’t particularly close to anyone in his classes, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t talk to the other students in his classes on occasion.
Caleb had sent her a text when he was leaving work to let her know he was stopping by campus but considering she was in class there was no way to tell if she had seen it or not. So it could very well be a surprise. It wasn’t as if surprising her was completely out of character for him either. “She might know,” Caleb said with a laugh. “I sent her a text, but you know how professors can be.” Caleb himself had no idea, only what he heard from Hanna, but with Jeremy actually being in college he was sure he at least knew.
Jeremy nodded, "Yeah, they don't usually like us texting in class." With everything that went on in the OC and as a result of his dreams, Jeremy usually kept his phone on vibrate, in his pocket just in case of an emergency. "When does she get out?"
“Four,” Caleb replied glancing back over at Jeremy. It was only a few minutes away. “I take it you go here?” He had already assumed as much but getting a direct answer never hurt.
Jeremy glanced at his watch to see that it was almost four, which meant that he had a little while still until his last class of the day, “Yeah. It’s my second year.” He said, turning his attention back to Caleb, “Don’t have a major yet though. Still working on that.” He’d figure it out soon; hopefully before the end of the semester so that he could start registering for the classes he’d need.
“Don’t ask me for tips,” Caleb replied. “Never went to college.” Or finished high school but he kept that information to himself. Even with the lack of education he was doing just fine. Yes, he didn’t have the best history but now he was getting his life straightened out, even had a job at Stark.
Jeremy laughed and nodded, “Noted. Don’t ask Caleb for advice on majors.” He had a few ideas floating around in his head, but he hadn’t made the final decision just yet. “So what do you do, if you don’t go to school.”
As far as Caleb knew, Hanna hadn’t picked out a major either, but she was still in her first year. He wasn’t sure exactly when you were supposed to do that sort of thing. But then came Jeremy’s question pulling him out of his thoughts. “I work at Stark,” he replied with a nod of his head.
“Really? That’s pretty cool.” Jeremy heard about Stark Industries often, considering Tony Stark was on Valarnet, “Do you work with Tony Stark or does he not come out and talk to the peons?” He smirked to show that he was teasing, but at the same time, he had no idea what Tony Stark was actually like.
“Not with him exactly. But I do talk to him.” He talked to Tony a lot actually. He wasn’t sure if that was normal or not but he had somehow bonded with the head of the company slash genius inventor. “He’s a nice guy. Best boss I ever had.” That wasn’t saying much considering the last bosses Caleb had were criminals who weren’t exactly warm and fuzzy, but still. “You thinking of working there?” He’d recommend it.
“I don’t even know what I’d do there.” It’d be pretty cool to work at a place like Stark, but Jeremy had no idea what there was there that he could do. “What do you do there?” Maybe if he had an idea of what someone his age did at Stark Industries it’d be something to think about for the future.
“I work in tech,” Caleb replied. It was the easiest explanation. His official job title was ‘information risk analyst’, but most people didn’t know what that meant. Explaining it got too complicated especially with someone who didn’t know computers.
“So you work with computers? I’m not great with those. I mean, I only really use one to write papers. I use my phone more and play video games.” With five people in his house and being the youngest, Jeremy hardly got a chance to use the family computer when he was younger and then by the time he could have had an interest in a laptop, he had a smart phone and Playstation.
“Yeah. I’ve been into computers since I was a kid,” he shrugged. It took awhile for Caleb to acquire one of his own, but he spent a lot of time at the library using the computers there when he had a chance as a kid. “Video games are cool too though.” He had also been known to upgrade phones but he was cutting that out of his life now. Going legit.
“I used to joke that I could be a professional video game tester, but I don’t even know how you’d get into that.” Jeremy said, twisting the Gilbert ring around his finger. If the ring worked the same way in real life as it did in the dreams than it wouldn’t actually work for him anymore cause he was a Hunter, but Matt wasn’t around to hand it off to and even if he was, it would only make sense for him to do so if he was dreaming too. “I’m sure I’ll figure out my major soon though.”
“That would be an awesome job,” Caleb agreed just as he spotted Hanna exiting a building. “Well I should get going. Good luck with your major. Nice meeting you,” he said getting up from the bench to go meet his girlfriend.
“Thanks.” Jeremy looked towards the direction that Caleb had been looking, but didn’t know which girl he was referring to since there were quite a few of them. “It was nice meeting you too.” Jeremy nodded and checked his watch to see how much time he had left until his next class and decided to head towards it and continue reading there.
