Anna was super excited. Things with Ezra were progressing slowly--but that was good. It was normal. And fine. And she thought she might love him, was that weird? Too soon? She wasn’t gonna say it, of course. They weren’t even, like, officially boyfriend and girlfriend or anything. Though, that conversation had come up--they both wanted to take things slow. Not rush into things. Anna explained about her Dreams, and being engaged after like, three hours. She didn’t want to do that again.
But she wanted a Grizzly. Caroline had one and Anna wanted one desperately. So she asked Ezra to take her to the Boardwalk where they could play the games, ride the rides, and eat funnel cake. Ice cream and funnel cake sounded amazing. And then they could go on the Tunnel of Love ride and cuddle. ROMANTIC, RIGHT?
She wrapped her arm around his as they wandered slowly down the boardwalk. It wasn’t a cold night, but it was pretty. The sun was setting over the ocean, and the sky was lit up in oranges, pinks and blues as it darkened.
It had been a strange day for Ezra. One of the girls from his dreams had shown up to class with a broken leg, something that had happened in the dreams as well. It seemed as if she was having the dreams too. But he didn’t want to focus on that or think about the dreams. Now was time for the boardwalk with Anna, the girl was basically his girlfriend and she deserved to have the evening she wanted. Complete with him winning her a stuffed animal. Or at least attempting to win one.
“So what do you want to do first?” he asked giving her hand a squeeze as as as as they walked down the boardwalk. Anna had listed off a million things on the ride over from campus. It was difficult to tell which she was most looking forward to. Ezra had to admit the sunset over the ocean was rather breathtaking, and yes romantic. He had a feeling this was going to be a good evening.
“All right, Stefan,” Caroline said with her usual warm smile as they walked from the parking lot to the boardwalk. “Are you ready to redeem yourself?” It would be easy for him now that he had his own vampire strength.
“I wanna… go play some games.” Anna said. They could lean against the railing for a minute and admire the sunset, sure. But there were games to play. And Ezra had to win. He had to win her a prize. She wanted a Grizzly of her very own. “C’mon,” she said, and gave his arm a tug to lead him down the boardwalk, as as as as as the sun sunk a little lower.
Stefan smirked a little. The man who ran the hammer game thingy saw the pair coming, and remembered them from before. (It was hard to forget when a tiny, blonde thing beat out her boyfriend’s score on a game of strength.) This time, though, Stefan was ready. He nodded, pulling out a five dollar bill to hand to the man. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Not so fast birthday boy,” there was no way Caroline was going to let Stefan pay for anything on his day. She already felt kind of bad for ditching him for the weekend. But only kind of. He had his brother and other guy friends he could hang out with so whatever.
She pulled her wallet out of her purse to pay for the game herself. Handing it over to the moustache guy who she of course remembered. “I think he’s going to win this time,” Caroline assure the man a small smirk on her face.
“All right, to the games,” Ezra said after they had admired the sunset for a minute longer and then off they went. He wasn’t sure about the test your strength game considering if he didn’t win he would probably look weak. But maybe he could convince Anna the game was rigged? He had to start somewhere, might as well be with that game.
The couple walked over to it and that’s when Ezra saw Stefan, his smile widened, but then he saw who Stefan was with. His student. Caroline. Also the girl that had made Anna kiss him and then forget or something along those lines. He still didn’t fully understand all those details. “Uh, maybe this wasn’t such a good idea,” he said to Anna hoping she hadn’t noticed her friends yet.
Stefan was still smirking. He wasn’t going to argue when Caroline pulled money out to pay for the game. “If you insist. Happy Birthday to Me,” he said, then wrapped his hands around the hammer. He was about to lift and swing when he happened to see Ezra out of the corner of his eye. He turned his face a little and caught sight of his friend and who he was with. Good for him, Stefan thought, to be out with Anna. Even though she was young, she was a wonderful girl. He lifted a hand to wave, not really noticing the look on Ezra’s face.
“Hmm?” Anna asked in response to Ezra’s sentence. They’d reached the games, and she was looking around at all the bright lights, listening to the hecklers as as as as as as as they called out across the boardwalk. She turned to look where he was looking and caught sight of Stefan’s wave. Her brightness doubled, and she lifted her free hand to wave back in return. “Look! It’s Stefan and Caroline!”
Caroline’s eyes widened when she saw who was heading over. She knew there was something going on between Anna and Professor Fitz. Hell she had even helped instigate it when her humanity was off, but she didn’t think Anna would be naive enough to actually date one of her teachers. Or that her Professor Fitz would be stupid enough to date his student. She narrowed her eyes at him as the pair approached. Totally judging her Creative Writing Professor.
Well there was no avoiding it now. It would be rude to ignore the now. He sighed as he walked over to his friend and Anna’s friend, dropping Anna’s hand when they got close. “Hey,” he said to Stefan, but gave Caroline a polite smile. “Didn’t expect to see you guys here.”
“Yeah, we just thought we’d come out and test out the machine. Make sure it’s working properly. After last time.” Stefan said, giving Caroline a little smirk. But then he saw the look on her face and his own smirk melted away. Was there something wrong?
The man who ran the ‘test your strength’ booth cleared his throat.
“Oh. Right.” Stefan said, then lifted the hammer. He easily made the bell at the top chime. Just in one swing.
Anna was impressed. She lifted her hands to clap for Stefan, barely noticing in her glee that Ezra wasn’t holding her fingers anymore. “Good Job, Stefan!” She said, almost in a cheerleader stance. “Ooh, are you getting your own Grizzly?”
“Good job, Stefan!” she echoed Anna, but not with quite the same amount of enthusiasm. However, the smile was back on her face as as as as as she was now focussing on the birthday boy and not her professor. “Which stuffed animal are you gonna get?” after all she had selected Grizzly and he was her bear. Even if Stefan had paid she had still won him. Now the situation was reversed.
While Stefan made his selection her attention went back to Anna and Ezra. “So is this like a date?”
Ezra was relieved when the attention was off of him with Stefan’s win. However it was short lived. “Uh, well…” his voice trailed off he didn’t want to lie but he didn’t want to admit to dating a student either. Deflection was probably his best option. “Wait,” he said hoping Caroline and Stefan wouldn’t notice the quick change of subject. But knowing what he knew of Caroline he doubted it. “How long have you two been dating?”
Stefan went for the least likely choice. It was a giant, white-and-purple unicorn. And Stefan decided he was going to name it Noah. Noah the unicorn. He thanked the guy with the moustache, and was turning around when Ezra asked his question. Stefan gave a shake of his head, and replied “We’re not dating.”
Deflecting much? What the hell was with this guy? Caroline found herself getting more angry. And a unicorn? Really Stefan? She’d tease him about that choice later. “Nice try Professor Fitz,” Caroline shot back. “We’re just friends,” Stefan was like her brother more than anything. “I don’t think that’s the situation going on with you two though.”
Ezra looked from Anna to Stefan to Caroline trying to buy some time before his eyes landed back on Anna. “We are just enjoying the boardwalk,” he replied which was a bit of a lie. He should know better from his dreams but this situation called for it. “Like the two of you it seems.”
Anna gave Caroline a funny look. It was torn between How dare you accuse… and Please don’t start. “We’re just having a walk.” She said, glancing at Ezra and meeting his eye. This went from zero to awkward in seconds. Point-oh-seconds, even.
Stefan wasn’t sure what was up with Caroline. Ezra was a good guy and Anna was a pretty awesome lady. So… why not? This was weird. He frowned a little at one of his blonde best friends, then glanced back over to Ezra, apologetically. “Well, we’ll leave you to it. I’ve got to get Mr. Horny home.” Beat. “That was a really, really bad choice of a name. Forget I said it.”
Caroline wasn’t buying this walk story at all. But if Anna wanted to date her Professor that was her choice. Meddling never got Caroline anywhere. Besides she had basically instigated this whole thing when her humanity was off. “You really fail at naming stuffed animals,” she replied to Stefan her smile forming on her face once again. “That was worse than Mr. Bear,” and then her attention was back on the couple. “But yeah we gotta go. Lot’s of birthday celebrations to do,” for Stefan, and then her but that was tomorrow. “Enjoy your walk.” With that she linked her arm through Stefan’s and walked off.
Ezra looked down at Anna. “We should probably go too,” he said feeling awkward now. And not go out in public. But he left that part unsaid. Even though dating Anna wasn’t the same as dating a high school student this situation was beginning to feel an awful lot like his dreams.
As Anna watched Caroline loop her arm through a chuckling Stefan’s arm and lead him off, she turned her attention back to Ezra. It was just sinking in how awkward this situation must have been for him. And now for her, too? He was practically her boyfriend, but it wasn’t really… allowed. Anna didn’t want to have to hide her feelings (and boy, were there feelings) but …
She nodded. “Yeah, let’s head home.”
