Ezra’s life had improved a lot over the last few weeks. Well at least his social life. He still wasn’t writing. But at least his students were no longer suffering along with him. He had lightened up a lot on the amount of work he assigned and the snapping had stopped. Of course every time he taught Spencer’s and Hanna’s class he was always distracted. He couldn’t help himself. He needed to know more about them, if they had dreamt, how much they knew not just about him but about A. So far he had gotten no answers other than Spencer slipping up once and calling him Mister Fitz instead of Professor but that could have meant anything.
Today’s class everything changed. Hanna had a cast on her leg. A cast. He remembered when he had dreamt about Hanna getting hit by a car. By Mona or well A, but at the time no one knew that. So of course having recently suffered from a dream injury himself he wondered if that was what had happened to Hanna. Once again Ezra found himself getting distracted and staring at his blonde student throughout the class, not unlike her first day.
Once again as the class ended and students started filing out Ezra decided to hold Hanna back. “Ms. Marin, do you have a moment?” he asked already making his way over to her seat. He certainly going to make her walk up to the front with her leg like that.
And cue creepy Mister Fitz staring at her again. Though the fact that she had dreams with him in them… well, she was going to assume that he’d dreamt of Rosewood as well. Was he A? Was he staring at the handiwork his dream counterpart had done? Okay so maybe Hanna was getting a bit paranoid. She was allowed!
Or he could ask her to stay after class. Much like her first day.
“Um. Sure.” Not needing to get her things together right at that moment now, she just watched him some.
“What’s up, Mister Fitz?” Because it just slipped. Because while she tried to keep the two separate, she was confused and well..pain medicine.
There is was from Hanna too. Mister Fitz. Sounding an awful lot like her dreamself, and looking particularly like her post being hit by Mona’s car. “Are you okay? What happened to your leg?” Yes he just same right out and asked. He was also perfectly aware of the fact that most professors didn’t show this much concern about their students. He generally didn’t. Perhaps he showed more concern than some professors when it came to his students grades, wanting them to succeed, but he refrained from getting involved in their personal lives. It was different when it came to the liars though. He couldn’t help but feel protective of them.
“As okay as one can be when they feel like they’ve been hit by a car.” It wasn’t like Hanna knew for certain if Professor Fitz dreamt. She hadn’t seen anything from him on the network, that much was certain. And while he was in her dreams, that didn’t mean he had them. Only she was pretty certain that he did.
So for now, it was going to be a vague answer that would give her a tell on if he actually dreamt or not. So she didn’t actually answer the what happened portion of the question. But if he was a dreamer, and had gotten further along, he’d know about the hit and run and her broken leg from the dreams.
And that told Ezra everything he needed to know. He was done tiptoeing around the subject when it seemed fairly clear that Hanna was dreaming. He was ninety percent sure of it. “I take it you’ve been dreaming of Rosewood?” he asked a frown forming on his face. It wasn’t like he wanted Hanna and Spencer to share his dreams. They weren’t the most pleasant. He knew they were worse for the girls. So while he had been anticipating this moment, almost anxious for it, there was also a sense of dread that came with it.
“You mean where you’re sneaking around with Aria? Yeah.” And that answered Hanna’s question on whether or not he had the same dreams as her. Okay so maybe not the best response but Hanna wasn’t exactly known for being subtle. Add in one of the things she had seen before getting hit with a car was just that? It was pretty fresh in her mind. Weird. But it was what it was.
“Your frown says it’s only going to get worse.” Groaning, Hanna just dropped her head on the desk. Because that was exactly what they needed. For things to go from worse to worser.
Of course she mentioned Aria. Ezra’s face paled at the name. Hearing it for the first time outside of the dreams, and there was something about the way Hanna said it. It was as if she knew her. Honestly he wouldn’t put it past her. When Spencer had shown up in the class it was clear they already knew each other as well.
“Yes,” he finally replied frown still present on his face. “Do you.. know her?” he wasn’t quite sure how else to ask that question.
Then it was on to the next thing that Hanna had asked, Ezra nodded his head. “Unfortunately that seems to be the case.” Even after Mona was locked up they didn’t seem to get any better. “If you just dreamed about getting hit by the car it seems like I am quite a ways ahead of you.”
“One of my best friends.” It was a statement of fact and it was present, not as if bleed over from the dreams. And Hanna was very protective of her friends. She also definitely had noticed how he paled at the mention of her name. As if… the blonde couldn’t really place it. Especially when there was proof that things were going to get worse as Mister Fitz verified it.
He also seemed to be way ahead of her. She hadn’t had many dreams since she broke her leg and the A message showed up on her cast. It was almost as if she was getting a small reprieve. Though she had a feeling that reprieve was not going to be something she got often, not in the dreams. Still, she did look up as he said he was ahead of her.
“How far ahead? Do I even want to know?”
It wasn't as if Ezra's feelings for Aria had carried over into his real life. That wasn't what was causing his reaction. He just felt some sort of bond with her. A need to protect her like he did with Hanna and Spencer. At first he hoped that none of them existed but now that it seemed unavoidable well he didn't exactly know how to feel. "I didn't realize she was real," he replied honestly. "That any of you were." Honesty seemed to be the best policy when discussing dreams. Especially when it came to their dreams where there were so many secrets.
Her next question was more difficult to answer because well time wasn't the easiest to tell in Rosewood. "About a year." It was his best guess really, he knew it was the next school year and not quite Christmas time yet so a year seemed about right.
“Well we’re very real.” Not that Hanna could blame him for that she supposed. It would be really weird to dream about people but not know them, and then suddenly BAM, there they were. Still, honesty was a good thing. That was fast becoming obvious. Mostly. Telling the truth to the wrong person is how I ended up where I am now. Ali’s ‘ghost’ had been pretty convinced it was the truth that got her killed. You think the truth is some shiny disco ball… And then she’d try to be honest with Lucas and that hadn’t turned out well.
Dream-wise though? Truth was definitely important. Especially since it wasn’t like he’d be able to lie about things here. Not really.
“Wait, so we have to deal with this crap for a year?! What the hell is wrong with that town?”
Not like Hanna knew what to expect. But stalking and threats for a year?! Or really over a year since they started with school and it was already… November? Time really was weird to tell in Rosewood.
“So it seems,” he replied with hint of a smile. Sometimes you just had to have a sense of humor about these things. The color was slowly coming back to his face as well.
“More or less,” he wasn’t sure exactly how much to tell her. He was out of the loop for most of it anyway. “I’m sure you will see it for yourself… unfortunately.” They weren’t all that pleasant for him. He knew they were worse for the girls. “I’m sure you’ll learn more than I have.”
Sometimes humour was the only thing that could get people through a thing. Besides, more pressing matters. Such as the fact A was going to be a long standing threat.
“Well that’s just great.” Hanna so was not looking forward to any of the dreams now. They were already stressful and she could tell that it was just the tip of the iceberg.
“I know I’m your teacher,” in both worlds, but he left that unsaid. “But if you ever need or want to talk I’m around.” It seemed as though there was a certain bond people from the same dream world shared and he hoped he could achieve the same with the girls. He wasn't kidding himself though. He knew he would always be the odd man out. Especially when they got to the part about him writing a book. But still he had no one else. Other people understood the dreams sure. But no one else was from Rosewood.
Hanna smiled faintly, though it wasn’t a real bright one. How could it be when she had the distinct feeling that getting hit by a car was only the beginning? She wasn’t looking forward to what they had in store, though at least Caleb had them as well. Surely if they were completely horrible, he’d tell her… right? Unless he didn’t know. Ugh. No use dwelling, she clearly had no say in the matter. “Thanks, Mis--Professor Fitz.”
