When: November 3
Where: Hanna’s house
Warnings: Talk of vampirism
Status: Log | Complete
Ever since Caroline had heard about Hanna’s injury she had been worried about her friend. So of course the very next day she was going to check on her. After her classes she stopped at work, even though she wasn’t working, just to pick up some treats for Hanna. A sparkling latte and a selection of different baked goods. Then she was on her way to Hanna’s house.
After parking on the street Caroline made her way to the door with the coffee and bag of goodies in hand. She rang the bell, and hoped Hanna was at least able to come to the door. She knew Caroline was coming by, if it was too much of a problem she would have told her to let herself in or something, right? Besides Caroline couldn’t exactly let herself in anyway.
For now, Hanna was currently staying on the couch because stairs and her were not friends. It was fine. Really. Completely fine. No, actually, it wasn’t. Hanna already had to deal with a cast and stalking in the dreams, she didn’t want to deal with the cast in real life as well. But she had no choice in the matter so staying in the living room for the next month or so it was.
At least she had friends to visit and keep her company. She wasn’t looking forward to going back to class on Thursday because hello, more creepy Professor but it was what it was. Hanna currently was trying not to think about it. Which was why she was excited for Caroline to visit.
The knock on the door alerted Hanna to the presence of her blonde friend and she got up, grabbed her crutches then went and opened the door.
“Caroline, hi! Come in!” She didn’t know her friend was a vampire and needed an invitation, but it was habit.
“Thanks,” Caroline said as she entered the house, though her smile wasn’t as bright as usual because seeing Hanna walking around on those crutches? It wasn’t something the brought a smile to Caroline’s face. In fact it almost made her frown.
“How’s your leg?” she asked following her friend back over to the couch where it was clear Hanna was spending most of her time, but first Caroline shut the front door behind her. Once Hanna was situated on the couch again Caroline handed over the latte and bag of baked goods. “For you,” she said with a bit more of smile this time.
“It feels itchy.” Because the cast was uncomfortable and she just...didn’t like it. But there really wasn’t anything Hanna could do about it but deal. Which, annoying. No matter though. Making her way back to the couch, the blonde got comfortable and then grinned as she was handed the sparkling latte and baked goods. “Aw, thank you!”
There was a voice in the back of her mind telling her that the broken leg was seriously going to mess with her weight, but she knew how to deal with that. She wasn’t going to think about it. Not right now.
“No problem!” Caroline replied finally taking her own seat at the opposite end of the couch (past where Hanna had her leg propped up). “So what happened? Dream injury?” she knew how those went. Well kind of. She had never been severely injured herself. There was a car crash but all she had gotten from that was a major headache. But she had many other things happen to her from the dreams, like turning into a vampire and turning off her humanity.
“And you got it in one.” Sipping the latte, Hanna sighed. The message from A was covered up at the moment but it still was there, taunting her in a way. Not like she really knew how to explain the situation in her dreams. As if the fear of A was present, even here. Fear of retribution, which was absurd. Completely. And yet…. that growing anxiety and fear was there. “I guess I saw something I wasn’t supposed to? I don’t know. I just know I got it by a car in the dreams and woke up with the injuries.”
“Ouch,” being hit by a car had to hurt. Well obviously given Hanna’s current condition. There was something Caroline could do about that though. And now that it was obvious that Hanna had started dreaming and knew things could come from the dreams, well it was probably time to fill her in. “I could heal you,” she offered her tone serious. It was the best way to lead into the whole ‘I’m a vampire’ subject really.
“No kidding.” Hanna had accepted her lot in life, that she would be stuck in a cast for the next month or so. Even if it meant she wouldn’t be able to go to Vegas or Disneyland. But it wasn’t like there was much that could be done about that fact. Sadly. Or Caroline could offer to heal her. The blonde nearly laughed as if it were a joke, but there was something about Caroline’s tone that told her that this was a very serious offer. “...What do you mean you can heal me?”
Where to begin with that question? “You know how you got your broken leg from the dreams?” Caroline began. Explaining she was a vampire never got easier. No matter how many times she had done it now. “I got something like that. Only not an injury,” she paused to try and read Hanna’s face. See how she was taking it all so far.
Well that didn’t sound ominous at all. Only it did. Especially with how measured Caroline’s voice was and how she was phrasing things. Hanna wasn’t dumb, she could pick up on those things and it didn’t require excuses or coincidences. So she just nodded some, hands around the latte to let the heat calm her. Not that she was panicked or anything. But with not knowing exactly what to do in this situation….
“Okay…” Which really was just telling Caroline she was listening and she could continue.
Caroline took a breath before continuing. “I’m a vampire,” she said giving a moment for that to sink in. “But not like a bad one,” she then added the words coming out in a rush. “I don’t eat people or hurt anyone or anything.” Except for when she had first turned or when her humanity had been off but she didn’t want to think about that. “My blood heals.”
Caroline. Vampire. Any other day and she’d ask if this were some sort of sugar coma or trick or her medications messing with her but given Orange County and what she now knew to be a thing… Hanna wasn’t as incredulous as she might have been before. Though vampire with healing blood who could go out in the light?
“Well I’m relieved you’re not a bad one?” What was she supposed to say to that? It took a lot to stun Hanna but finding out one of your friends, someone you admired in high school, was a vampire? That… that took some getting used to. “Your blood can heal?” Well.. that was one thing to get hung up on and it fit the conversation?
Hanna didn’t seem terrified of her. Most people didn’t seem to be when Caroline told them. She had a feeling it was because she had a feeling that everyone knew her well enough to know she wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone. She may be a different species now but she was still Caroline.
“Yes,” she confirmed about her blood. “It usually works for dream injuries too. One of my friends healed a dream gunshot wound,” she didn’t say that it was Professor Fitz because that wasn’t her secret to tell. Or which friend was the healer because again, not her secret but it was good for Hanna to know there were other vampires out there and Caroline knew them. “I have other powers too like super strength and speed, but yeah i can heal your leg.”
Not really knowing what else to do or say, Hanna ended up just nodding some.
“Useful gift.” Far more useful than threats coming in through text, song, and whatever else A decided was a good way to torment them. And for what? Hanna still couldn’t figure it out. It was tied to Ali, that much was certain but if she was alive or not… the dreams wanted her to believe the blonde was dead but Hanna couldn’t shake the idea that she wasn’t. Especially since she’d seen her in her dream. At least… she thought she did. It could have been from the medicine and being asleep.
“But I think my mom would get suspicious if I suddenly was healed since she already knows I broke my leg.” Which really sucked. Because being healed would be so much more convenient. Not that she really wanted to drink anyone’s blood? But still. “It was complicated enough coming up with a reason as to why I woke up as if I’d been hit by a car when I went to sleep fine the night before.”
It was very useful. The pros of being a vampire far outweighed the cons. When Caroline first changed she wanted to change back. Become human again, but she soon realized she liked herself better this way. She had just become a better version of herself and she helped people more than she hurt them.
Right. Explaining things to your mom. Caroline remembered how that was too. Her mom didn’t dream either, but she knew what Caroline was. It had taken a few months but Caroline eventually shared it from her mother. Still she got the whole wanting to hide it from your mom thing. “Well the offer is always there if you need it,” for her leg or if she ever experienced anything more severe from the dreams. The last thing she wanted was for Hanna to be hurt. “How did you explain it to your mom anyway?”
Explaining things to the parental units was exceptionally difficult when you lived with them. So sadly, Hanna was stuck with the broken leg and dealing with the pain of being in a cast for a month. She so wasn’t looking forward to that. “I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.” Hopefully it wouldn’t come to that needing to drink someone’s blood though. Though given the current escalation of A, who knew…
“That I’ve been really stressed because of school and ended up sleepwalking. I don’t know if she completely bought it, but I slept walked and would leave the house in that state when my dad left so there’s a history there at least?”
Yes, she basically blamed Mister Fitz as he was the one who had been putting pressure on with all the school work at the start of term.
If Hanna’s mom didn’t know about the dreams it seemed highly likely that she would buy it. What other explanation would there be for Hanna waking up for a broken leg, unless she thought Hanna snuck out, but then she probably would have just gone straight to the hospital. And really the girl was eighteen and in college now, just because she was living at home didn’t mean she shouldn’t be able to come and go as she pleased. There was no real reason for sneaking out.
“I’d buy it,” Caroline assured her. “I mean if I didn’t know about the dreams that seems like the most logical explanation. And school really is so stressful.” Not so much anymore for Caroline. She had accepted the fact that she would never be a perfect student. Something was always coming up that kept her from attending a good amount of classes. So compulsion for grades it was. There was a time where she felt guilty for it, but not so much anymore. Not when she was busy helping Ripper!Stefan or dealing with learning the news about her own father like last year.
“But okay I am kind of dying to know, what did you see that you weren’t supposed to?” It had to be big if she had been hit by a car over it.
“Exactly.” Because it wasn’t like she could just tell her mom what actually happened. Not when she had no idea what it was either. Instead she would just… deal. And be annoyed as well as freaked the hell out. There wasn’t anything to do but go with it and that was exactly what Hanna would do right now.
“Well. I thought I saw the person stalking my friends and me so I went to investigate but it was just Aria sneaking around with Mister Fitz.” Nose scrunching up, Hanna took a bite of pastry. “Because apparently he’s a creeper teacher in the dreams as well and we’re in high school. But I guess I saw more than I was supposed to…” Not that Hanna knew what she had seen. But if A had hit her with a car.
“But it was definitely the person stalking us who hit me with the car…”
Caroline wasn’t sure whether to focus on the stalking or the fact that Professor Fitz was in her dreams. And he was messing around with a high school student? Gross. “Wait. You’re back in high school and Professor Fitz is in your dreams only teaching your high school class?” she had to be sure she is following this right. “And he’s hooking up with Aria? Gross.” Caroline barely remembered Aria. She just knew she was one of Hanna’s friends back in high school and she had seemed a bit eccentric to Caroline. Very different from Anna.
And on to the other piece of information. “Your stalker sounds very violent. I would be like terrified.” Because running her down with a car, seriously?
There were a lot of strange things to focus on. Or the fact Caleb apparently dreamt of Rosewood as well, though she had yet to see him. Still, she knew that there was time given he said he had started later into the semester. “Yeppp, you’re definitely following. And yeah. Gross.” It didn’t slip Hanna’s mind that Anna and Aria were completely different.
But right. A.
“It’s beyond creepy. We started getting texts and we thought they were from our friend who went missing but then they found her body.” Or what they assumed to be her body, “Reminding us of secrets, blackmail…. it’s really disturbing and it’s like they’re everywhere.”
Caroline still wasn’t positive if there was anything going on between Anna and the Professor. As in Anna hadn’t told her anything but by the way her friend was acting it certainly seemed like it. Whatever. Caroline had her own life to focus on. If Anna wanted to get involved with a Professor that was her business. This was obviously a pattern with him if he did this sort of thing in the dreams too. “I didn’t think it was possible to get more creeped out by him,” and that was enough creepy Professor talk for her for the day.
“So you’re getting texts from someone posing as your dead friend blackmailing you with secrets only she knew?” That did sound disturbing. Like way disturbing. But if there was one thing that Caroline knew from her own dreams, people who died weren’t always dead. She didn’t know how many times people had come back from the ‘other side’. But then she was from a supernatural world and it didn’t exactly sound like Hanna was.
“Right?” But yeah, that was pretty much enough about creepy professors. But she also knew that it would be impossible not to mention it given she had seen Aria and Mister Fitz together before getting hit by the car. Shaking her head as if to end that particular conversation, Hanna focused on the next part. The part about A.
“Yeah…. Not just texts. We tried blocking unknown numbers, I had a song dedicated to me on the radio, packages have shown up… Pictures to be used to, I don’t know, try and tear us apart? A message on my cast…” It was a lot.
Of course Caroline had picked up on the fact that Hanna kept saying we and while she was curios she wasn’t going to ask who the we was. Hanna obviously dreamt of other people Caroline knew or knew of, like Professor Fitz and Aria and she did respect the fact that if they wanted Caroline to know they would tell her themselves. Well okay she wanted the Professor Fitz gossip. But Aria and whoever else could tell her if they wanted to.
“That is just beyond creepy. How did the stalker even know you were going to be listening to the radio?” That was way too intense on the stalking front. “Wait, a message on your cast? Did that like show up here too?”
Hanna knew that Spencer was struggling to deal with the Dreams so who knew if she would open up about them. But it was also hard to respond to herself as a singularity in the dreams, because everything was tied to all four of the girls. Even when they got individual threats and taunts, it was all of them being contacted.
“I have no idea. It’s just... “ Completely terrifying? Yeah. Shuddering was the only way to really answer that question. But then Caroline was asking about her cast and Hanna just nodded. “Yeah. Yesterday…” And that had been a great panic attack she’d had in front of Spencer. But it was also what prompted her posting on the network even if she didn’t mention the A message.
At least in Caroline’s dreams she always knew who the enemy was. No matter how powerful her enemy was she always knew who was after her and her friends. She couldn’t imagine how horrifying it would be to have no idea who the enemy was, what they wanted, where they would pop up or what they would do next.
“That’s just… wow.” There were no other words for it really. “I’m sorry, Han.” Caroline frowned not sure what else to say, especially about the fact that the message had actually shown up on her cast. “Can I see it?”
Hanna wished there were a way to explain it, but as there wasn’t, she could just nod at the apology. There really was nothing that could be said. And while she didn’t really want to show the cast, it was easier than pulling up her text messages so she just peeled off the sticker she’d put on the message.
“Sorry about losing my temper?” Caroline repeated as she read the message. “I’d call hitting you with a car is a little more than just losing their temper.” Poor Hanna. Caroline would have freaked the hell out if something like that had happened to her. Which Hanna might have so Caroline didn’t want to make too big of a deal out of it and make it worse for her friend. “What’s with the A?”
“No kidding. Ugh.” Annoyed, Hanna grabbed a pillow and held it over her face as she leaned her head back against the back of the couch for a moment. It didn’t actually solve anything but as she wasn’t exactly mobile at the moment, it was about the extent of her making her frustration and annoyance physical. At last until she got the question about the A. Dropping the pillow beside her as she straightened up some.
“The million trillion dollar question. It’s how our friend used to sign her texts but you know… she’s apparently dead. So… A is for anonymous I guess. I’d stick with CS for creepy stalker but A sounds better. Or something.”
Creepy stalker sounded like a better name than A. She would say something like at least A doesn’t exist here to help Hanna focus on the bright side of things, because that’s what Caroline did. But knowing this place there was no way of knowing that for sure so Caroline shut her mouth on that fact. “I hope you figure it out,” she gave Hanna a reassuring smile because there wasn’t really much else she could do. “The dreams can be a real bitch sometimes.”
