Anna was ridiculously excited to have Ezra over for Halloween. She was doing her best not to think about last year, when she spent the weekend with a vampire. Stressful. This year was going to be so much better. She’d gone a little overboard on the decorations, figuring that was a lot safer than dressing up. No one in their right mind would run the chance that they’d turn into their costumes again after last year, right? Right.
So she had a big bowl of candy by the front door, decorations ALL OVER the lawn and walkway, driveway, and the foyer. In the living room there were cobwebs, witches, skeletons, pumpkins, etc. Anna strunk purple, green, orange and “black” lights all over, too, and every time someone rang the doorbell, spooky music played.
She came back to the sofa after passing out a few treats to little kids, and cuddled up close against Ezra before turning the movie back on.
Ezra had to admit he felt a little odd being in Anna’s house, not because she had roommates, but because one of them was his student. Caroline wasn’t home though so he could ignore that fact for now and just focus on the night with Anna and the scary movie she had picked out for them.
“I’m not sure we are ever going to get through this movie,” he said as as as as he wrapped an arm around her once she had settled back onto the couch again.
“Probably not.” Anna said, smirking softly. The sweater-vest-thingy he was wearing felt good under her cheek. She cuddled closer. “It’s a little less scary when I have to keep pausing it every five minut--” The oven timer started to ding, making Anna stop. She reluctantly pulled away from him so she could pop into the kitchen and pull their dinner out of the oven.
The doorbell rang as as as as as as Anna was on her way into the kitchen. “Could you get that?”
Ezra couldn’t help but laugh when not even five minutes went by before they had to pause the movie again. And then the doorbell rang while Anna was busy in the kitchen. “No problem,” he replied getting up himself to go answer the door.
Only when he answered the door it wasn’t exactly kids dressed up in costumes, it looked a lot like the Halloween decorations Anna had set ou. There were a few witches and a skeleton and even a scarecrow with a pumpkin for a head. “Trick-or-treat,” they said in unison, one of the witches cackling.
“Uh Anna,” Ezra called glancing over his shoulder toward the kitchen. “What kind of Halloween decorations did you get?”
Anna was in the kitchen, pulling pizza out of the oven and putting it on the cutting board. “I dunno!” She called back. There was a pizza roller cutter thingy around somewhere. She started digging through a drawer. “There’s a witch and a skeleton… and something else, I think. Why? Is there something wrong with them?” She asked, as as as as as she finally found the pizza cutter.
The decorations advanced towards him before Ezra could shut the door. He backed into the house, the decorations coming in after him. “Because they are currently in your entryway,” there was another cackle from one of the witches and the skeleton laughed his bones rattling. Ezra wasn’t sure exactly what to make of all this.
“What?” Anna came out of the kitchen, holding the pizza cutter. It wasn’t much of a weapon, granted, but their opponents were plastic and vinyl. “What the heck??” Anna asked, gasping at the sight of the intruding decorations. “What’d you do??” She added, glancing at Ezra and stepping forward to join him. United front, right? Right.
“What did I do?” Ezra asked glancing from her to the decorations. “I just answered the door. Your decorations are the ones that decided to invade our Halloween.”
“It’s time we had fun on Halloween too,” the skeleton said replied a hint of evil in his tone.
The witch started nodding, and it was so enthusiastic that her hat fell off. The scarecrow with the pumpkin for a head bent down to pick it up and passed it back over to her. The whole thing was so bizarre, so like a nightmare and a silly daydream at the same time.
Anna stepped closer to Ezra, but it seemed like the decorations were just… standing there. Expectantly. “...do you… think… they want to watch the movie with us?” She asked, almost sounding nervous.
“No, way,” the witch’s plastic face crinkled up even more than it already was. “Watching movies on Halloween is boring.” She cackled, and it was a sound so shrill and awful it made Anna’s teeth hurt. “We want candy.”
The others perked up at the mention of candy, and Anna’s eyes flickered from the decorations-come-to-life to the bowl of trick-or-treating candy on the side table.
Ezra didn’t want to spend the evening watching a movie with Halloween decorations. He didn’t want anything to do with the Halloween decorations. Why did things like this always have to happen?
“Okay,” Ezra said raising his hands to show he didn’t mean any harm before he slowly went to reach for the candy bowl. “If we give you candy will you leave us alone?” Maybe they could go trick-or-treat somewhere else.
Anna lifted the pizza cutter up a little bit as Ezra left her side. She took a step forward, too, not wanting him to have to face the strange decorations alone. But… that sounded like a good compromise? Sort of?
“Yes.” The witch started nodding again, and her hat fluttered down to the floor once more.
“And you can go trick-or-treating!” Anna added. “You’ll get lots of candy if you go along the block.” She had no idea if this was actually true, but they’d had a lot of trick-or-treaters, so she assumed many of the houses along the block were passing out candy.
The skeleton grabbed the bowl of candy from Ezra’s hands and the decorations began to fight over it.
“There’s plenty for everyone,” Ezra offered with a sheepish smile. This was definitely one of the oddest experiences he had had in his life. Certainly the most bizarre Halloween. “You should get to the other houses before the kids do.” He felt a little guilty sending the decorations out onto unsuspecting neighbors. Especially when there were kids out. But he didn’t want to deal with them, and they didn’t seem violent.
Hey, Anna would be glad to see them go, too. This was the last time she’d shop at the Halloween SuperStore. Whatever it was called. She watched the decorations take armfuls of candy from the bowl, then they dropped it on the floor, and turned around to leave.
Anna wrapped a hand around Ezra’s arm. “I guess we turn off the porch light now?”
