Who: Tessa Gray and OPEN TO ALL
What: Halloween at the shop, set after this
Where: Much Ado About Books
When: 31/10/15
Rating: Low I imagine, but watch out in the comments?
Status: OPEN TO ALL

Tessa loved seeing her shop full of people enjoying themselves, reading books and talking. Halloween had always been one of Tessa's favourite holidays, it was steeped in history and she enjoyed talking about it. To be honest, she loved anything to do with books and history and it was a passion which was obvious when she spoke to people. She had just finished talking to a little girl and her mother about the origin of the Jack O'Lantern story and led them over to the section of books which told them more about it. Leaving them to it, she returned to the front of the store where she was tapped on the shoulder.

Elizabeth loved books. Had been reading without assistance long before she had been sent to school and after her work in the UN, she could also read fluently in multiple other languages. Much Ado was one of her favourite shops in the area and she liked Tessa and her staff. She was a frequent visitor and often had books on order through the store, much preferring using local business to fulfil her orders than faceless organisations on the internet. Picking up a copy of Grimm's Faerie Tales, she smiled and ran her fingers over the cover, enjoying the slightly rough, textured surface beneath her fingertips. She was thinking of getting something special for Pepper for Christmas, after all, she was her closest friend here.

Irisa liked working at the store. It was still only part-time, but the confidence she felt she had gained since working there was immeasurable. Talking to people still wasn't her thing and she would never consider a career in sales because she'd sooner hit some people than sell them anything, but she had learned to be pleasant enough to answer people's questions and show them where certain books were. Moving though the store, she watched kids getting their face painted, families carving pumpkins with the artist who had been brought in and some kids getting ready for story-time in the corner. It was a nice environment, even with all the kids around, she thought to herself.

Kira was rushing from the face painting to the story reading and almost ran into Irisa, stopping she apologised politely before racing off to get a seat near the front. Sarah wandered slowly behind her, "Sorry about that" she said, before realising she knew the young girl, "Oh Irisa, hello. How are you?"

Irisa watched the kid carry on running past her after apologising before Sarah's voice caught her attention. "Oh, hey, I didn't realise you'd be here, how are you?" she smiled up at the counsellor, stuffing her hands in her pockets as she did. "I'm doing ok, nothing remarkable to report really, which I suppose is a good thing," she laughed at little.

"Kira wanted to come, she was pretty excited about it. Halloween is much bigger here than at home" Sarah explained, "I'm good thanks" she'd completely recovered from the encounter with Ed and was back to work properly. "That is definitely a good thing, though I hope you're having a bit of fun"

"That's your kid?" Irisa thumbed behind her at the girl settling down for story time. "She's pretty," she remarked, turning back to Sarah with a little smile. "So you're all ok after the..." she gestured a stabbing motion with her hand and grimaced with her face to refer to the Sarah's incident with her patient. Irisa hadn't been around as much as she would have liked, dealing with her own drama about her family. "That must have been pretty scary. Do you still see the kid?" she asked, putting her hand back in her pocket

"It is. Kira, thank you" she said, forgetting that as much as she knew about Irisa the young girl knew very little about her. The life of a counselor, though Sarah tended to be more relaxed than most.

Chuckling she nodded, "Yes I'm all better thanks. It wasn't a pleasant experience that's for sure. But strange things happen around here. And yes I still see him" she confirmed.

"Huh, cool, I never knew you were a mom," Irisa gave a smile and huffed a little laugh. "How old is she?" she asked.

"I'm glad to hear it. Can't believe you went back to seeing him again, that must have been an awkward session to have when he first came back," she remarked dryly. Irisa was one more likely to hod a grudge than anything else. She probably would have stabbed him in return on their next meeting rather than talked to him.

"Yep, is that strange to think I'm a mum?" she asked curiously, "Kira is eight going on eighteen somedays" she added with a wink.

"It wasn't so bad. He found it hard I think, a lot of guilt but it wasn't his fault and our sessions were helping so we just need to focus on that now" Stabbing clients was pretty strictly frowned upon so it was probably a good thing Irisa wasn't planning a career in counselling.

"Not strange, just...not something I would have pictured you as when we first met," Irisa shrugged. It was the truth, not that she meant it in a bad way or anything, but Sarah didn't seem to give off the aura of being a mom when they'd first met.

"Was it hard? To go back after such a bad injury?" she asked curiously, tilting her head. For all of Irisa's history with Nolan and her training with Integra an Alucard, she'd never really experienced any serious injuries

Sarah laughed, "Honestly you aren't the first one to say that. And it's not really something I ever imagined either" she had no trouble admitting that, not that she'd give Kira up for anything now.

"A little" she nodded, "There was that nervousness but I knew he wasn't himself and I know now not to put myself in that situation again. It hurt like a bitch I can tell you that much"

"You didn't want to be a mom then?" Irisa asked casually, she reached out to pick up a glass from a nearby table and took a drink of orange juice.

"Do you need a professional bodyguard then?" she joked, although it would be a god use of her talents. Maybe she should consider contracting herself out to people. She didn't really know what else to do with herself, if she were honest.

"Nolan's still worried that something's going to happen and he keeps telling me to keep my eyes open, but I think he's just being paranoid," she shrugged, casting her eyes around the room to check for any troublemakers. "Vanessa, thank you so much for coming!" she gave the other woman a quick hug before a couple of kids ran past to get to Capable's reading and knocked them. Tessa laughed as they called out a quick, half-hearted apology over their shoulders and carried on. "Thanks, it's pretty busy in here, isn't it?" she grinned proudly. "I might have to think about looking at bigger premises if these events keep getting more attendees," she shook her head and looked around again. She was very proud of her girls and all the hard work they put in to the store. She might have to think about more staff soon too.

"It's lovely, you should be very proud of what you've created here" Because in the age of technology it was impressive to get such a turn out. "I don't want to grow too much too fast and risk undoing everything we've worked so hard to accomplish. I wouldn't want to disappoint the girls, they've worked so hard," she smiled softly as she looked around at her reliable, steadfast crew. She was so proud of them and she wouldn't want them to suddenly without a job because she had been too careless and ambitious.

Tessa thought about it for a second. If her Dreams taught her anything, t was that she needed to keep an open mind and explore different possibilities when they presented themselves.

"Alright, why don't we choose a day next week that suits us both? You can come over to mine and I'll cook dinner for us," Tessa offered. "I think I'm only busy on thursday night with opening the shop late, so any other day should be fine. Although you may have to put up with my partners coming in and out of the room," she warned Vanessa with a smile.

This whole thing was new to Capable, she knew about Halloween of course but dressing up and face painting and everything like that wasn't something she'd seen or done before. But she was at the bookstore working dressed in a witches costume and telling stories to the children and she loved it.

Taking a break she moved to the side to get herself a drink and take everything in. It was so nice to see smiling people around and the books were selling well.

Wanda loved this bookshop, had found it in the first week they had moved here and tried to support the events when they were held. She had been on the edge of the story telling area, looking at an interesting book, when the girl had started reading. Wanda had liked the reading so much, she had put her book down and turned to listen, leaning back against the shelves. The kids loved her, responded to the drama she brought to life and the humour.

When the girl had finished reading, she stepped around the chattering children and approached her while she was taking a drink. "Hello, you don't know me, but I was listening in and just wanted to say that I enjoyed your reading very much, you are very good," Wanda smiled at her.

Thanks to Tessa's encouragement Capable had begun regularly holding reading groups with the children and it helped her confidence a lot. Perhaps her clever boss had realised that it would do so.
