Spencer was bound and determined to get her book back, as she was going to need it for class. She and Caleb had sort of played text-tag over the last week, and she knew he still had it. So after arranging a meeting time, Spencer headed to his desk. She didn’t have an office of her own, but she had a desk with the other interns in International HR. Caleb’s office was small, but she envied it.
“Hello?” Spencer said, stepping further in. He wasn’t at his desk, though. Again. Did he forget they were supposed to meet?
Caleb was just returning from taking a quick break when he found Spencer in his office. He hadn’t forgotten that she was stopping by to get her book back today. She was just early.
“Hey,” Caleb greeted walking past her into his office. He opened the top left drawer on his desk and pulled out the book. “Here you go,” he said as as as as as he handed it to her.
Spencer was always early. She spun around at the sound of his voice. “Oh, hey.” She said, and gave something of a smile. They weren’t close, it wasn’t like she was happy to see him. But if Hanna was interested in him, and they were going to be hanging in the same circles, they should get along, right? And there was something else, too. Those niggling dreams she’d been having…
“Thanks.” She said, and accepted the book. “I wanted to go through it again now that we’ve got the assignment in class.”
“No problem,” he replied with a grin. “Sounds like your English Professor is a real hard ass.” At least that was he had heard from Hanna. Although she had mentioned that he had lightened up a bit lately.
And speaking of Hanna. “You have any Halloween plans?” Okay that wasn’t exactly about Hanna but he was getting there.
“Yeah, he’s… well, he’s gotten a little better.” Spencer said, tucking the book into her bag. “It’s… weird. He’s weird. The whole thing is weird.” She didn’t want to go into the details, so she was glad when Caleb changed the subject.
“Halloween? Not really, no.” She paused. “It’s on a Saturday, so I’m still looking for things to get me out of the house--keep me occupied.” She corrected herself. “Why do you ask?”
Lot’s of weird. Caleb got that. It was actually a little weird talking to Spencer right now after dreaming about her but he didn’t want to think about that. So Halloween talk and planning his surprise for Hanna it was.
“Just wondering,” he replied with a shrug. “You’re not dressing up as anything with Hanna?”
“No.” Spencer was definitely side-eyeing Caleb now. Why was he so interested in what she was wearing for Halloween? Or if she was dressing up with Hanna? Was this part of some sick fantasy?
Wait. No. That’s just wrong.
“She said something about dressing as Alice from the SyFy show? And I’m not really sure what I’m gonna do. Probably Wednesday Addams, or something.” Spencer shrugged. “Why, are you dressing up?”
Well that was a lot easier than he thought it was going to be. “Thinking about it,” he admitted to Spencer’s question. He knew Spencer and Hanna were close and she probably wouldn’t want to ruin Hanna’s surprise. Since she had already helped him out he might as well let her in on his plans. “I want to surprise Hanna at her mom’s work thing.”
“Oh yeah?” Spencer asked, raising an eyebrow. Maybe she’d mis-judged the guy. He seemed decent enough, she supposed. “You’re gonna… just show up there?” Okay, it was kinda romantic. And completely unexpected. Spencer… approved. Surprisingly enough. “I think Hanna would like that.” She’d either like it or hate it.
“That’s the plan,” he confirmed. “I hope so, otherwise wouldn’t be a good surprise.” But he was almost positive that Hanna would like it. Despite the fact that their relationship was still fairly new (if you could even call it a relationship) he had still known her for over a month now and he’d like to think he knew her fairly well. “I’m sure this goes without saying, but don’t tell her.”
Spencer smirked softly. She gave him a look. Of course she wouldn’t say anything to her. Spencer wanted Hanna to have a happy Halloween, and this seemed like it was going to be a very good one. Besides, she’d see her the next day, anyway. They could chat and gossip as as as as as as as as they passed out candy to trick-or-treaters.
“You’d better be good to her.” Spencer added, then turned to head out of his office, book in hand. “Or else I’ll boil you in papaya juice.”
“I will,” Caleb promised. Not only because he didn’t particularly want to be boiled in papaya juice. (Why would you ruin perfectly good papaya juice?) But the last thing he wanted was for Hanna to get hurt, especially by him.
