Veronica needed a change. She did love being a lawyer, but with her dreams that career didn’t really fit her anymore, even if she had been one for like five minutes. She was meant to do something different with her life, solve crime or something along those lines. At least that was how she felt. There were a lot of strange occurrences that happened in Orange County and Veronica wanted to help figure out why, and maybe even help stop them.
She knew a little about The Agency from Sharon and she had to admit that sounded like the perfect place for her to work. It was either that or become a PI like her dreamself but she wanted to check out The Agency first. Talk to Peggy see if that was even a possibility. She didn't have any powers, but she sure knew how to hold her own in a fight. However her real strength came in problem solving. Gathering information and putting it all together.
She waited outside Peggy's office with Sharon until the director was ready to talk to her.
It was weird to be back at work. Sharon was easing into things. The Agency actually had an excellent day care system thingy right on the property, so Viv wasn’t far away. She was looking into getting full time child care for Viv at home, but for now it was such a relief to bring her daughter with her to work. She could just pop downstairs to nurse and everything.
“I’m sure she’s expecting us.” Sharon said. She lifted a hand and knocked on the door.
Sharon had given her a little bit of information about what to expect before this meeting happened. She quite enjoyed Veronica and was quite curious to see what she was hoping to get out of a career change. The morning had been light so far so she was really looking forward to having the two women show up and talk to her. She gathered all her supplies and went to answer the door when she heard the knock.
“Hey ladies, come on in,” she held the door open and gestured to point the way inside. Her office had amazing windows and she currently had the screens up and a couple cracked open. There were two comfy chairs across from her desk and she shut the door behind her as they walked inside.
“Thanks,” Veronica said giving Peggy a small smile as she made her way over to one of the chairs and sat down. She knew Peggy of course, being Sharon’s cousin and all. Veronica had always gotten along with her, but this situation was different. Formal. Not the three of them hanging out at the apartment fawning over how adorable Viv was.
“So,” Veronica began. “I’m pretty sure my dreams have finished.” There had been a sort of finality to her last dream. From the people she had talked to that had completed dreams, it seemed like people just had a feeling that they were over. Veronica definitely had that feeling. “I don’t know how much Sharon told you, but I was a PI in them,” and a lawyer for a brief second. “I feel like I should be doing something more active now, and solving problems.” Or strange Orange County occurrences.
Sharon moved with Veronica into the office, giving her cousin a smile and nod in greeting. They were on the job now, this wasn't the time for hugs and kisses. Even though they were close cousins, and Peggy was one of Sharon's favorite people, she knew when they had to be professional. But she was smiling warmly enough, anyway.
She took one of the seats and turned to listen to Veronica. Of course, Sharon approved whole-heartedly of Veronica wanting to work for the Agency, and though she didn't have first-hand experience of her roommate's skills, she didn't doubt them in the slightest.
Peggy leaned forward to listen to Veronica explain about the dreams and how she felt now, which made perfect sense. She sat back with a nod and smiled, “I completely understand. It’s hard to live what you consider a normal life and then live this whole other life in your dreams. I will always support anyone who wants to help make a difference in this place. You haven’t had much formal training in being a PI here, correct? It’s not a big deal, but I would certainly want to pair you with someone to mentor you. I know Sharon would be a great asset in that if you two wanted to go that route.”
“No formal training here,” Veronica confirmed. She had always been good at reading people (it was part of what made her such a good lawyer) and a quick problem solver. Since the dreams those skills had improved but she wouldn’t call that training. “I have been doing some sparring with my friend who teaches self defense classes, but that’s pretty much it.” She was beginning to feel a little unprepared for everything. But she was a quick learner and this was what she wanted. She had no doubt she would be able to handle it.
“I think Sharon would be the perfect mentor.” And Veronica definitely got along with her. She almost added ‘if that’s all right with Sharon,’ but Veronica already knew it would be.
Sharon was absolutely okay with taking Veronica on as a student? Mentee? Whatever, Sharon would be happy to work with Veronica. She was fairly confident that Veronica had most of the training that she’d need--the problem was that Veronica learned it all on the street, so to speak. At least, that’s what Sharon surmised from Veronica’s descriptions of her Dreams. Sharon just had to give her the other side of the story. The formal training part.
“That wouldn’t be a problem.” Sharon agreed, nodding from Veronica to Peggy. “I’m sure we’d both get a lot out of the pairing, actually.”
“I don’t want to put you in the field right away. And I know Sharon needs to ease back into it now that she’s coming off of maternity leave. I think spending a good majority of your day sparring would be good. Then we can probably figure out some training for you to do as you follow Sharon out in the field. I just want to make sure you are fully prepared and you know what you’re getting into. It’s not all field work, so there’s a handful of paperwork and researching that you’ll do, which I’m sure you have experience with,” Peggy was never quite sure how to ease someone with minimal training into a new career field. She could probably pull some strings with other government contracts and get Veronica into some seminars that would give her a feel for things.
Veronica nodded. That all made sense to her. It did sound like a good way for Sharon to get back to work after her maternity leave. As for Veronica? She definitely wanted to be fully prepared before doing anything. The last thing she wanted was to get herself or anyone else hurt. But the researching and paperwork would probably be her strong suit. “I do some of that already,” she agreed. Not just in her dreams either, she had to research her cases and there was definitely paperwork required for that too. Granted it was probably a bit different but she had a feeling the skill set was the same. “I need to give my boss two weeks notice, but I would like to start soon. This just feels right.”
“I’m ready whenever you both are.” Sharon said. She was easing back into things now that her maternity leave was over. Two weeks would be just enough time for her to plan out a training regime. With the skills that Veronica already had, Sharon was fairly confident they could get her ready for field work in a matter of weeks. And it’d give Sharon time to get back into shape.
“The sooner the better, I think.” Sharon added, giving her friend a smile.
“Two weeks would be great. It would give us time to figure out paperwork, get a background check finished, and give time for Sharon and I to get a plan together. There’s a lot of little things on a checklist to cross off, but everything should be finished by the time you have your first official day. I think this should work well,” Peggy was started to scribble down a few notes to herself on the sheet of paper on her desk. It would be a job for her and Natasha to get sorted out and then she would have to work with Sharon to get the training plan done. Bringing a civilian on board was a bit of extra work, but Veronica had the tenacity to make it here.
Veronica nodded as Peggy listed off everything they needed to do. She wasn’t worried about the background check. Obviously she would pass. “Just let me know if there is anything else you need from me,” she told Peggy. Though she was sure Sharon would be keeping her posted on everything. A genuine smile spread across Veronica’s face, now that this was becoming real she was actually getting excited for it. Yes this was definitely the right decision.
