Spencer was running a few minutes late to lunch with the girls. She’d let Hanna go off after English class, but stayed behind to have a word with her English Professor. She’d had some unusual Dreams about him, and wanted to scope out the grumpy-turned-sweet Professor Fitz. But Spencer wasn’t ready to tell her friends about these weird Dreams. Especially not Hanna. She was waiting and biding her time. She had to figure out if she was going mad first.
“Hey!” Spencer came up to the table with the three girls already sitting around it. “Sorry I’m late. I had to turn in an essay to Mister Fitz.” She slipped into the fourth chair, pulling her bag off her shoulder. Then she tugged her lunch box out of it.
Caroline had a thermos full of blood, that she had already drank from before meeting up with Hanna and Spencer, considering those too didn’t know what she was yet. So she ordered herself a BLT with from one of the cafe’s on campus. Keeping up appearances and all that.
She was already seated with Hanna and Anna when Spencer arrived. She knew Hanna and Spencer already knew each other, but she didn’t think that Anna and Spencer did. “Spencer, Anna. Anna, Spencer,” she nodded at each girl as she introduced them. Then she wrinkled her nose. “Ew. Professor Fitz.” Yes Caroline knew Anna had feelings for the guy, but she still wasn’t a fan.
Hanna had admittedly been a bit distracted in English that day. Not only was Fitz in a better mood, but she’d had a dream about him and that was just gross and weird. Admittedly it wasn’t much. High school all over again and he was the new English teacher and there was some weird look with Aria… Just because she didn’t comment on the posts didn’t mean Hanna hadn’t seen the abundance of dream posts and she was beginning to wonder if she’d started those.
She’d bug her creepy English professor about it later when she decided to get on a computer.
For now it was a group lunch. She’d initially been hesitant about leaving Spencer alone with creepy English professor but she knew the taller teen could handle herself and Hanna was craving cheese fries, so she was eating those (she had a salad as well as a chicken sandwich. Balance.) when Spencer showed up.
“I could have stayed behind you know.” Because they had to stick together and keep an eye on him.
Anna was thrilled to be back in school. Summer was way too long, man. Without things to study? And with her ex-boyfriend leaving her and her place of employment shutting down? She went from uber-busy to bored off her arse. Anyway, getting together with the girls was crazy awesome. She was beaming at Hanna and Caroline, and sat up a little when Spencer arrived. “Hi.” She said, then turned back to the sandwich she’d brought with her today for lunch.
“It’s okay. It wasn’t a big deal. Didn’t want Caroline to think we weren’t coming.” Spencer said. She gave the redhead a smile in greeting. “Hi.” Then she turned to Caroline. “He’s acting weird. Have you noticed?” Fitz was happy now. It was bizarre.
“Really, Hanna? You’d rather hang out with Professor Fitz, than me?” She would have called him creepy or something along those lines but she knew Anna had some sort of feelings for him and she didn’t want to be insensitive to her friend. But seriously, Professor was weird.
She did get it though, why Hanna wouldn’t want Spencer to be alone with him. Considering the conversation Hanna had told her about she had with the English Professor. Still the vampire knew both Hanna and Spencer could handle themselves.
“He’s very smiley. A lot less assignments too,” she commented. He had also been dream shot. She knew that thanks to Stefan. But she couldn’t exactly share that with two girls that she wasn’t even sure were dreaming. Could being shot really change his personality like that? “One of our roommates,” our as in her’s and Anna’s, “is like total bros with him or something. I can ask him if he knows anything.”
With school having been in session almost a month now, things were settling and the brief meeting with Anna before Spencer had shown up had gone off without a hitch. It had been easy to fall into random talking even though Hanna was good at that anyway.
“Sure, that’s exactly it.” Hanna just rolled her eyes, but it was all in good nature. With a shrug of her shoulders, she went back to her cheese fries but had accepted Spencer’s reasoning. She still thought it was better to stick together, especially if the dreams were the type people discussed and not just school overtaking her mind.
“I’ve noticed,” And then Caroline was mentioning how he was apparently friends with one of their roommates and that caught Hanna’s attention. She already thought he was a creep, but that meant there was more chance of seeing him and Hanna being Hanna spoke out. “Wait, so that means he can just randomly be at your house!?” Nose scrunched up, the blonde shook her head, “I would definitely not want to randomly run into one of my professors where I lived. Talk about weird.”
Anna had to go quiet at this part of the conversation. She wasn’t about to blurt out that she and Professor Fitz--Ezra--were more than just a teacher and his student. They were kissing friends. Anna didn’t want to jump into a relationship with Ezra. She didn’t want to fly off the handle, as she would have in her Dreams. She wanted to take things slow, to get to know him better, then she could fall in love with the guy. No more mistakes like Hans.
“I would not be okay with that. You need to set up some ground rules. Your roommate should understand that, right?” Spencer chimed in. She wasn’t shy about blurting out what she was thinking, too. Out of all the Dream Liars, she felt like she and Hanna were probably the most outspoken. (Others might call it tactless, but Spencer figured ‘honest’ was a much better term.)
“He did that actually,” Caroline replied popping a fry into her mouth, Gotta keep up those appearances. “On my birthday. Stefan wanted to have like a barbeque lunch thing,” before the strip club which she left out since she hadn’t invited Spencer. To be fair she had never been that close with brunette. They were getting closer now but still. “Anyway Professor Fitz showed up when I was in the back sunbathing. In my bikini!” Obviously because that’s what you sunbathed in, but it still needed the emphasis.
“He should,” Caroline agreed with Spencer. “I’m not sure if he will or not. He lives with three girls so he might hold his ground it comes to having guys over. Even if it is my Creative Writing Professor,” Caroline sighed. She didn’t really want her teacher hanging out at her house, but she was sure Anna wouldn’t mind. Caroline found herself glancing at her best friend at that thought. She was being oddly quiet, especially for Anna.
“There’s a difference between having guys over and having guys over who are your professor. Gross. He should respect that, standing his ground on having guys over or not.” There were so many things wrong with that. Sure people could be friends with teachers. After the fact. And even then it was weird, or at least it seemed weird to Hanna. But it really would be different at least if he wasn’t Caroline’s professor right now.
Anna went pink when her eyes met Caroline’s. She wasn’t sure what to say, really. She didn’t mind having Ezra over. And she hoped that part wasn’t painfully obvious. “I’m glad that Stefan has a friend, though. I mean, he’s been through so much.” She paused, realizing that what she was talking about might not be public knowledge. “...overseas? He was deployed for three terms overseas with the Navy, and now he’s back trying to reintegrate…” Wow, she probably sounded ridiculous.
The idea that Caroline and Anna were sharing a house with a vet from overseas was an intriguing one. Spencer locked it away for future reference. “Is he cute?” She asked, only half-joking.
“Ugh right? It’s not the end of the world though. I can always just leave if Professor Fitz comes over again. Go to my moms or something,” she shrugged popping another fry into her mouth. “But I don’t know if he is going to come back over. He basically bolted as soon as he realized Anna and I live there too.”
Caroline almost gave Anna a look when she began to mention what Stefan had been through. Hanna and Spencer had no idea she was a vampire. She was sure Stefan wouldn’t be a fan of them spilling his secrets when she hadn’t even spilled her own yet. Luckily Anna caught herself and covered. And yes, she did notice the blush on her friend’s cheeks. She had a feeling something was going on with Anna and the weirdo Professor.
And then came Spencer’s question. Why hadn’t Caroline thought of that? She had been trying to get her friend laid for over a month now. “He is!” maybe she was a bit too enthusiastic with her reply. “He’s pretty nice too! And funny. You should totally come over and meet him!” She would offer the same to Hanna but she had a thing with some plate guy or something.
“Well at least you can get out of weirdo situations that way. I’d still be annoyed at having to leave my home for that though.” Hanna was who she was and would have no problem with raising hell on that matter. But given it seemed creeptastic professor bolted, maybe he had some sense of boundaries. Hanna wasn’t sure how much, but sure. It could count for something. Why not.
If there was a slip up in what could and could not be talked about, Hanna missed it. Sure, she saw weird things mentioned on the network and had gone to a wedding, in space, and now the start of her own dreams and the text message about prison food… But she was still ignoring those things if at all possible and being in the military was definitely something that needed to be adjusted to.
“Ohhh, yes. Introduce him to Spencer!” Girl needed to have a bit of fun, especially after everything with Stanford.
Anna liked the change in conversation a lot more than talking about Ezra. She didn’t like feeling like she was lying to her friends, but at the same time she couldn’t exactly tell them what she’d been doing with their professor. No one would understand. Not yet, anyway. She needed to give it more time.
And sicking Spencer on Stefan? (Or wait, Stefan on Spencer?) Well, that seemed like something of a bad idea, considering what Stefan had done to her, Anna, just a few weeks ago. Spencer didn’t deserve to be bitten. Did she? But Stefan claimed he was better now, so...
“You should definitely come over and meet him.” Anna said to both girls. “Stefan is a really nice guy!”
Spencer nodded. “I’d like to meet him.” She said. Why not? It wasn’t as if Spencer had suitors knocking down her front door. Not that she was desperate for a date, either. Spencer had to figure out who she was again, where she was going, and what she wanted before that could happen.
“I think they both got how awkward it was,” at least she hoped. She had yelled at Stefan about it, but he seemed defensive of his friend and of whatever was going on between Anna and Professor Fitz. Which Caroline was beginning to doubt was still nothing. Now Caroline sort of got how awkward it was when she had been dating one of Anna’s professors. Although she hadn’t brought him around much until after Anna was out of the class, instead spending time at his place and he had never been her professor too because boundaries. And taking advantage of authority and all that, but whatever.
“We can have another barbeque!” Caroline suggested getting excited at the idea. She did love having parties or get togethers at least. “And make sure Stefan doesn’t invite our professor over this time,” especially since it would be weird for Hanna and Spencer too, not just her. “And Hanna you can totally bring pumpkin plate guy!”
“Hopefully. Because seriously. I mean, if he’s so desperate for guy friends, they can meet at Professor Creepo’s instead. It’s not like banning the friendship or anything.” And that was that. Hanna was just disturbed by the idea of a professor of hers just randomly showing up at her home like… boundaries were a wonderful thing.
“Barbeque yes. Professor showing up, no.” Because that would be all of them and that was just ten shades of not okay in the blonde’s opinion. The comment about Caleb caused Hanna to sit up a bit straighter. It wasn’t like there was any change in that particular dynamic despite how well the wedding went. In space. Still weird. But it had happened. “Pumpkin plate guy has a name. It’s Caleb. But I’ll see if he’s interested.”
“Wait, what’s this about a pumpkin patch guy?” Anna asked, desperate for the change in subject. It was awkward enough talking about Ezra in front of the others--who didn’t know what was going on between them--but then… she wasn’t sure. It felt like she was betraying Ezra. Or something. Anyway, it would be better to talk about something else.
“Is this the Wedding in space guy?” Spencer asked, perking up, too. “I still haven’t heard all the details about that. What even? A wedding in space?”
“I’ll make sure he doesn’t invite our Professor to the barbeque.” No need for that awkwardness again. But anyway time to learn about Hanna’s new guy. “Well excuse me,” Caroline replied playfully. “Not like you ever told me his name. But I like it. Very impressive first two letters.”
And then Spencer mentioned space. That was a detail that Caroline did not know about. “Wait, what? The wedding was in space?! Hanna Marin! You’ve been holding out on me.”
“Good.” And then there were questions about Caleb and Hanna suddenly felt a bit under the microscope. But you know, that was how it went when sometimes. Nor did she really mind.
“Yes, and the same person you were questioning me about when you showed me your office, Spence.” Though that was a valid comment. She had been to a wedding in space and had yet to fill Spencer in because, well, wow. It had been something all right. First Anna’s question. “Caleb is a friend and he took me to a plate throwing place and then since he’d never gone before, I took him to a pumpkin patch and he invited me to his friend’s wedding since new experience.”
And back to Caroline and Spencer, “Well a wedding in space sounded very far fetched but it really happened. Still kind of in shock that I was in space.”
Anna was shocked. “Oh my god. Wait, you threw plates?” She asked. “Oh. OH. I get it! Pumpkin Plate. Oh, that’s cute. That’s clever.” She grinned over at Caroline, then back to Hanna again. “Sounds like you’ve been spending a lot of time with this Caleb guy.”
Spencer didn’t care about the pumpkins or the plates. Or that it was Caleb from Stark Industries that Hanna was so into. “I can’t believe you were in space.” She said, sounding ridiculously jealous. “I want to go to space.” Cue Spencer acting like a petulant child. It was in relatively good spirits, though. As jealous as she was, she was happy for her friend first and foremost.
Caroline was much more interested in the guy than the space aspect. But space never interested her much in the first place and boys always had. Besides it wasn’t like she had any dates of her own lately. Sure she had gotten laid a few weeks ago but that was a one time thing and not something she was about to share. “Definitely sounds like a guy who wants a relationship to me,” Caroline commented finishing up her sandwich. She just hoped Hanna wouldn’t end up heartbroken. If she did, well then Caroline would just have to break this Caleb guy.
“Definitely is confusing is what it is.” Because all the signs pointed to yes, a relationship or the start of one. But based on what Caleb had said? Relationships weren’t his thing and she didn’t know if that would change and she wasn’t about to wait around. But she really liked him in the short amount of time she’d known him and thus, confusing. Still she grinned in victory at Spencer because she totally got to go to space. “Who knows, maybe some day, you too will meet someone who apparently knows people who go to space.”
Spencer gave a sort of ‘pssh’ noise as she lifted her sandwich. “Not likely,” she mumbled, then bit into her food and chewed thoughtfully. At the mention of Spencer finding a fella? No. The last guy she’d had anything with was… well, it was a bad thing. Broke up her sister’s engagement, caused all kinds of family trouble. Spencer was really good at causing family trouble. It seemed like there was a lot of yelling when Spencer did anything at or around her house.
Anna glanced at her phone. “Oh, I have to go to class. I was supposed to talk to the teacher about the reading assignment for last week, so I want to get there early. She said pages ten through fifteen on the syllabus, but in class she said through page eighteen, so I read all of it. But I wanted to clarify…” She blinked when she realized that she was probably a bit of an over-achiever compared to Caroline and possibly Hanna. She flushed. “Well, anyway… I’ll see you ladies tomorrow?”
Oh Anna and her tendency to ramble. Had to love her. “I’ll see you tonight!” Caroline replied because they lived together and all. Then her attention was back on Hanna. “Now you. I want details.”
