Will had noticed the change in his professor recently and couldn’t deny he was rather intrigued. He wasn’t complaining about the easing up of assigned work, in fact he was rather glad of it. He could handle it but it left him little time to spend with Tessa and Jem.
Loitering at the end of class he sauntered over and handed in the last assignment from the pre-easygoing days. “Glad to see you’re feeling a bit better Prof” he couldn’t help saying as he handed it over.
His class for the day was over, the majority of his students had left. Ezra was packing up his things to leave as well when one of his students walked up to him. “Thank you Mr. Herondale,” Ezra said as he accepted the essay.
“Feeling better?” he questioned though he was sure he knew what Will meant. His attitude had changed a bit over the past week.
“Yeah you know not being such a hard arse with the assignments. Everybody’s noticed you seem more relaxed lately” Will replied, not that anybody else would say as much. Will had never been one for tact, he always figured being straightforward was more important.
He was sure most of his students had noticed the change, but no one had actually commented on it. At least not until Will. “I tend to give a lot of work at the beginning of the semester,” he lied. Well it wasn’t a total lie. There was some truth to it. “Makes it easier to weed out the students who don’t care.” That was the part that was true.
Though he generally was a bit tough at the beginning of a semester this time had been different. He assigned way more than he ever had before. He needed something to do since he wasn’t writing and he didn’t want to sit around pining over some girl who obviously didn’t care about him. That had changed now though. “I can always assign more work if you’d like,” he was joking, obvious by the smile on his face.
“Uh huh. The amount you were assigning it was like you were trying to weed us all out” Will told him, not believing that for a second. He’d done his research and he was guessing it was either personal or dream related. Not that he really expected to find out, he was just a student after all.
“You know what I think I’m good, thanks for the offer though” Will replied with a bright grin.
“Congratulations for surviving,” there had honestly had been quite a few drops. More than he ever had before. But there were still a fair amount of students left. Will being one of them.
“You sure? I can always give you another essay?” More joking. “Extra credit?” he offered with an eyebrow raise.
“It takes more than that to get rid of me” Will said, and he was rather proud of the scores he’d achieved. Apparently their professor had still marked fairly even while he had been a demon of the assignments.
“Professor, please. You should know by now I am already your top student, anything else and it’ll look like favouritism” he grinned. Cheeky probably wasn’t a strong enough word for Will.
Ezra hadn’t taken his frustration out on his students grades. The extra work was more a way to give him something to do rather than punish his students. Although he knew he was a bit snappy from time to time. “I don’t know if I would go quite that far Mr. Herondale,” Ezra replied still joking around with his student. What? He could be cool and make jokes. It wasn’t that long ago that he had been a college student himself.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to admit it. We both know it’s true and that’s enough” Will replied, he liked the Professor now he was more relaxed. Teachers who could laugh and joke were much more fun than any others and more likely to earn respect too. There was a time for fun and a time for seriousness. Will knew the difference. Most of the time.
“If that’s what helps you sleep at night,” he quipped a small smirk on his face. Now that he was feeling like his old self again it was refreshing to kid around with his student. Not everything about college had to be serious at all times. Professor or not.
“Like a baby” he grinned, and it was pretty true. Will was a confident man and not much knocked that confidence. Joking with his professor was actually a pretty good boost.
“That’s good to hear. Your brain needs a good night’s sleep.” He said it in his ‘Professor voice’, even though he was obviously still kidding around with his student.
“It gets plenty. Though I am sure I could top the class even if I had insomnia” he said offhandedly with the ever present cheeky glint in his eyes.
“Let’s not put that to the test,” Ezra chuckled as he finished putting his papers in his bag. “Well I have to get to my office hours. You can join me there if you needed anything else?”
“Nothing else needed” Will said with a shrug, shouldering his bag, “Thanks Prof. Glad to see you happy” he added as he moved towards the door.
“Thank you Mr. Herondale,” Ezra replied as he watched his student walk away. “Have a nice rest of your day.”
