The first few weeks of classes Ezra hadn’t been his usual self. He was in a bad mood and taking it out on his students. Mostly in the form of lots of work (grading distracted him), but there were a few occasions where he found himself snapping at students. Now that his mood was better they were getting less work and the snapping had stopped.
“Ms. Tendo, do you mind staying a moment?” Ezra asked after dismissing his English class. He did owe her an apology. Although he hadn’t technically punished her for missing his class for a doctor’s appointment, he hadn’t treated her all that well when she showed up to turn in her assignment. He didn’t make it a habit of apologizing to students, but he had met her over the summer. Enjoyed talking to her then and he had been in the wrong a few weeks ago, so an apology she would get.
Another day, another class. Since the whole incident from the beginning of the month, there hadn’t been any more real issues at hand with Professor Fitz. Mostly confusion on what had happened, frustration because she had vouched for the class only for him to act callously and then nothing. She answered in class when called upon, had been graded fairly as far as she could tell (not that she had much to go off of when it came to this type of class or how it was usually graded) and kept to herself.
So being asked to stay behind? That was new and she wasn’t exactly sure how it would go. Mostly because as far as she could tell, nothing was amiss, there was no speaking out of turn or anything of that nature. So a confused look was sent to Ranma with a shrug for him to either stay or leave as it was up to him before she turned her attention back to Professor Fitz and nodded, sitting back down as the rest of the students filed out.
Like hell Ranma was about to leave so Fitz could probably just be a jerk to Akane again. He leaned against his desk as they waited to see what the outcome of this little request was going to be. Ranma had made his distaste of Fitz quite obvious after his treatment of Akane, and he wasn't going to waffle on it until some sort of amends were made. So yes he stayed, he was quietly unimpressed with Fitz. His expression was fairly reflective of this. But he agreed to give him a chance to speak before he wrote him off as an asshole completely.
The rest of the students filtered out. One lingered behind with Akane. Ranma if he remembered correctly. He didn’t always remember his students names, particularly not the boys, however Ranma had contacted him a few weeks ago. Pointing out that he had been a bit too harsh on Akane. So yeah Ezra wouldn’t be forgetting him now.
However. right now is attention was on Akane. “I wanted to apologize for the other week. You’re doctor’s note was legitimate and I should not have snapped at you about missing class.”
While Ranma had no problem calling teachers out (not that Akane actually knew about that), Akane tended to be reserved and respectful. Unless she was given reason after reason not to be. (Happosai, Principal Kuno.. and even then.) So normally she wouldn’t say anything on what had happened. She hadn’t because it had been so strange to Akane. But when Fitz then apologised and stated the obvious that her note was legitimate, Akane just blinked and looked at him.
“Why wouldn’t it have been?”
It seemed absurd to her that he would think it was fake. And the snapping at her part. But why would it have been fake?
Ranma was hard eyeing Ezra, but it softened a bit with his apology. He probably shouldn’t have been so comforted by all this, but he knew initially Akane had liked him. Ranma was indifferent about him as he found English rather daunting. His posture however didn’t change, he was still defensive and ready to be on the attack, professor or otherwise should this guy decide he wanted to hurt her after all. But he was starting to loosen up a bit. He didn’t interrupt just yet, he simply observed.
Ezra wasn’t quite sure how to explain. It was obvious that Akane and Ranma were from a different culture. Japanese if he would have to guess. They probably didn’t fake doctor’s notes to get out of classes there. “Let’s just say I have gotten a few fake doctor’s notes in my time as a professor,” he answered honestly giving them both a warm smile. “But again it was wrong of me to assume that.”
Even if she showed no sign of it, Akane was aware of Ranma’s defensive stance even if he seemed to be casual. It was a sixth sense of sorts, borne from years of living together and then the dreams. It wasn’t even strange to her because of their dreams. The amount of times someone tried to attack him or use her as leverage when their lives were weird enough?
“Oh.”
It still seemed strange to her, but there wasn’t much Akane could do now beyond shift some then nod.
“Apology accepted?” Because, well, it wasn’t okay but it was over and done with and he seemed more like the person she had met in the coffee shop and less like the person who had snapped at her for something that had been covered. “Are we able to leave now?”
Ranma seemed to accept the apology to Akane, his annoyance at Ezra dimmed some but his protective streak didn’t. He’d had more than his fair share of people using Akane against him for one reason or another. Ezra’s rotten attitude adjustment had come out of the blue really so it put him a bit on edge. “Akane ain’t one to screw around.” His tone came out a bit harsher than he meant for it to but it was obviously out of care for Akane where it came from than anger at Ezra anymore.
Ezra could see how protective Ranma was of Akane. Not only from his stance and facial expression during the whole exchange, but also the words he spoke and the message Ranma had sent Ezra a few weeks ago. “I got that Mr. Saotome,” he replied to Ranma though is voice wasn’t harsh it was light. He was not the snapping jerk he seemed to be the first few weeks. Ezra actually liked his students.
“Of course you can go,” he replied. Eyes back on Akane. “Good job on your essay,” he added even though it had already been graded and handed back so she knew as much. “Have a nice rest of your day.”
