It was clear from from her message that Jemma needed a drink or six. He could understand why she was upset and anxious of course, because he was too. He was behind Cosima in the dreams and didn't know what the outcome of her illness was there so of course he worried about why would happen in the waking world. This was one of the things that he hated about the dreams; that they could make you sick. He'd seen another person talking about the dreams making him sick so he knew Cosima wasn't the only one. He just hoped that this procedure would help her.
After telling Jemma where to meet him, he got ready then headed out to meet her.
Drinks. Drinks would be good. She was doing her best to appear on top of things, and she was extremely good at ignoring her own problems and issues in favour of more pressing matters. Cosima’s health? Definitely a more pressing matter as opposed to the frustration and isolation of her own dreams. She could deal with that.
It didn’t mean that a break from it all would be appreciated and undoubtedly needed though. As easy as it was for Jemma to lose herself in her work and science, she knew on some level that breaks were needed. Being invited for a drink was just a good way to ensure she actually got out.
Time and location in hand, the biochemist made her way to the bar Felix had mentioned once she got ready.
Felix had decided to wait outside the bar for Jemma so that he wouldn’t miss her. He didn’t think that she would have gotten there before him; something telling him that she would choose to be punctual rather than early so he leaned against the outside of the building, long legs encased in black skinny jeans and boots with metal embellishments around the heals. His hair was done up as usual and he wore black eyeliner as well as lip gloss to accentuate his eyes and lips.
Taking out his phone, he sent Jemma a quick text to let her know that he was waiting for her then started scanning his facebook feed.
Punctual was good. Admittedly Jemma could also be known to be early but given she had to ensure she was put together so she at least looked like a normal functioning person, so be it. Make up was wonderful for that, no matter how subtle. Deflection, really. Trousers. A nice blouse. It all went to maintaining an image of being fine.
Receiving the message as she was making her way to the bar, Jemma sent a quick response that she was nearly there before pocketing her mobile. And soon enough, she was there, going up to Felix. “Sorry if I kept you waiting.” And she would always be polite.
When he saw Jemma approaching, Felix stood up straight and gave her a smile, “Not at all.” He leaned down to give her a hug, figuring that she needed it right now. “Let’s go in. First round is on me.” He said once he’d straightened up and moved to open the door for Jemma.
Hugs were always so strange to Jemma. She was better about them since being with Cosima, but they still were rare to her otherwise. But she appreciated it and Felix was right. She did need a hug, no matter what she claimed. “Thank you.” And with a slight nod of the head, she stepped inside and looked around. Not too bad a bar and well, it was just a matter of relaxing. Or at least trying to.
“What do you want?” He asked once they were inside and had approached the bar. Felix wished that there was more he could do for Jemma and Cosima other than provide alcohol and weed, respectively, but for the time being he was doing what he could and he supposed that that was good enough, “Do you usually got for something hard or something girly?”
Sometimes that was all someone needed. Just a person there and providing company. Goodness knew that if she wasn’t given specific reasons to leave the lab these days in her desperation to find a cure and not fail Cosima, Jemma would probably live there. So as much as she did want to do more, she knew that she needed the break. And with things in motion for Cosima to have the procedure, there was hopefully going to be some breathing room.
“I don’t have much of a go to drink.” Mostly because she didn’t go out drinking much. Usually if she went to a pub, she got a Speckled Hen or something that was recommended. “What would you suggest?”
Felix thought for a moment then turned to the bartender and ordered two drinks, “You’ll like this one. At least I do, so I think you will.” He watched as the bartender poured both drinks, mixing alcohols and garnishes. When the drinks were finished and presented to them, Felix opened a tab, figuring that they were going to have more than one drink that evening then he took both drinks, which were an orangy pink color and headed towards a nearby table. Once at the table, he set both drinks and pulled out one of the chair’s for Jemma.
“That’s good enough for me.” Because really, why would someone suggest a drink they didn’t like? It was completely illogical. So if Felix liked the drink, it was a good start for Jemma. Obviously tastes varied and she might not. But it at least was recommended by someone who liked it. That and she just needed something to take the constant edge off. And then following Felix to the table, smiling in thanks as he pulled the chair out as she sat down.
“To finally getting some progress done.” It was a weak toast, but that was the important thing. That they were getting something done and hopefully some room to further research and find answers.
“Progress is good.” Felix said, raising his glass in a toast with Jemma’s before taking a sip, “So how’re you holding up?” It was a stupid question, because Felix knew how she was doing, but sometimes talking about things in person helped more and he was all about trying to help Jemma tonight.
Jemma wasn’t used to talking about herself or her feelings. She was used to bottling everything up. It wasn’t comfortable, but it was what she did. There was always something else that needed to be dealt with and so Jemma compartmentalised. So she just blinked as she put down her drink when Felix asked the question. “Well. I’ll be better once we have solid answers, but this will help.” Which..not really an answer to the actual question. But it was something? Maybe?
“At least we’re ahead of the game now.” They knew what they could do to help Cosima so that was a plus, right? Soon she’d be cured and they could all go back to waiting for the next dream or crazy occurrence. “Once Cosima is recovered I’m thinking of throwing a party. She deserves one, I think.” If anyone deserved a party it was Cosima.
“That has been my thinking, yes.” Because really. Any small chance for them to get ahead of this and give them more time? That was the important part. Especially with so many hurdles facing them in not knowing the coding and sequence from the original sample. “That would be a brilliant idea. She definitely deserves one.”
“You should help me plan it.” Felix said, taking a sip of his drink, “And you can let me know when she feels up for a party so I don’t surprise her with it too soon.” Felix wanted this to cheer Cosima up; he didn’t want to spring a party on her while she was still recovering.
“I can definitely help with the letting you know when she’s up for one. I’m not so sure how I would be at actually helping to plan a party though.” Which in theory shouldn’t be hard and Jemma was very good at preparation. But that was more in line for school things, tests, assignments and things like that. Not so much with party planning.
“There’s a first time for everything.” Felix smiled, already planning the party in his head, “I think it’d be good for you too.” It was sure to take Jemma’s mind off things once the transplant was over and she’d be able to keep her mind clear for things like helping Cosima during her recovery.
“Yes, yes there is.” And then Felix was mentioning how he thought it would probably be good for her as well, which caused her to laugh some before taking a sip of her drink. “You don’t need to worry about me, but who knows, perhaps it will.” Because she would always downplay her own problems. It was ingrained in her really. Still, a party would probably be good for all of them at this point.
