Who: Peeta Mellark and Spencer Hastings
When: Last week
Where: Mellarky
What: Spencer is looking for a quiet place to study
Rating/Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Spencer finished up her first couple of weeks at UCI, and was feeling pretty good about things. Sure, she had a lot of work to catch up on (what was up with Professor Fitz assigning so much work, man?) but she could get it all done this weekend. With something yummy for the family (trying to appease her parents was difficult work… not to mention her sister) and a huge stack of books in hand, she would go home and hide until her work was finished.
This was Spencer Hastings. She could get it done.
So she headed to a new bakery--a place she’d never been to before--and stepped through the door. It smelled warm and sweet inside. Could she just study in here?
The door jingled and Peeta looked up from his place behind the counter. He was cleaning up and left his towel there as he went over to greet the new customer. She looked like a college student and judging by the stack of books she was more than likely going to study sooner rather than later. He would never tell anyone no if they wanted to hang out in his bakery to do so, “Good afternoon, welcome to Mellarky. What can I help you with today?”
“Well, I was thinking about getting something sweet to share with my family tonight, but… it smells absolutely amazing in here. Now I don’t want to leave.” Spencer gave the guy behind the counter a smile as she wandered closer, still laden with books. She glanced around for tables or chairs or somewhere cozy to sit and curl up with the book for her English class. “Maybe I’ll have to sneak something small and hang out for a while, then take something bigger home?”
“Haha, that’s how I get most of my business. I should really sell candles or bottle the smell somehow. But I think that you should be able to make that plan happen. You can have a cupcake or something and then bring home a bunch more. We’ve got tables, so you can certainly hang out for a while,” Peeta explained while gesturing over towards where the seating area was. He knew a few people that liked to sit and eat while on their lunch break.
“That sounds amazing.” Spencer was a little relieved. Putting off going home was… well… it was becoming second nature now. Not that she didn’t love her family, but seeing the disappointment on her parents’ faces… the resentment in her sister’s eyes? She stepped closer to the case to look in at the different cupcakes they had available.
“Which should I go for?” She asked, lifting brown, almond-shaped eyes to look at him. “Which is your favorite?”
“It’s hard for me to pick a favorite,” he answered honestly with a laugh, “I made a chocolate cherry chip cupcake today that’s been selling really well. So, if you like cherries then that one is for you. Otherwise, a lot of college students have been going crazy over the pumpkin stuff.” There was quite a few different pumpkin items in his case because he knew the trend was a big seller and he hoped to capitalize on that. He wasn’t above it.
“Ah, I’m not all that into pumpkin,” Spencer said, leaning down a little so she could get a good look into the case at the cupcakes. “The frosting looks amazing. What kind is that? Is this one of the cherry ones?” She asked, and pointed to one toward the side. Her eyes came back up to look at his face, and she found she was smiling. Genuinely smiling. It felt like it’d been a while since she’d done that.
“Oh yes, that’s the chocolate chip cherry. The frosting is a cherry almond and it’s really delicious,” Peeta commented once he noticed which one she was pointing at in the case, “There’s cherry pie filling inside the cupcake as well as chocolate chips in the cupcake batter itself.” It was a new thing that he was trying and he thought that they came out quite good. He was happy to sell his newer creations because it helped people try something new.
“Jesus.” Spencer gave a low whistle. She was certainly impressed with the selection in the case, and with the baker’s description of the cupcake? It made her hungry. “I’ll take one, please. Do you serve drinks, too? Seems like a cupcake as rich as this one should go with a tall glass of milk.” She gave the baker a smile as she stood upright once more, still hugging her leftover books to her chest.
“Yeah, we have coffee, milk, juice, and water. We don’t get super fancy around here, but we do have a few things,” Peeta commented with a chuckle, “And a glass of milk would go really well with this one. Let me get that and your cupcake on a plate and I’ll meet you at the register.” He flashed her another smile as he went to grab a plate and a glass. Once everything was ready he went over to the register to ring her up.
Spencer nodded appreciatively, and started toward the register. “Thank you,” she called out to him while he was plating everything up. She waited at the register, fiddling with her credit card. She liked his smile. He seemed like a very nice guy, running this bakery. And then Spencer was wondering why she’d never been in here before. She’d have to remedy that. “You don’t mind if I sit in the corner over there and read for a while, do you?” They didn’t close soon, did they?
“Don’t mind at all. Just holler if we get too loud in the back. It tends to get a little crazy when the mixers and such start going,” Peeta explained with a laugh, “Hopefully it won’t be too bad and interrupt your reading. We won’t close for a few more hours, so you’re set for a while. If you need anything at all, just let me know.” He was more than happy to let her study while she ate her food. That’s what he encouraged and he would probably bring out another treat for her later once he got the batch of bread finished up.
“Thanks.” Spencer gave him another bright smile once the transaction was complete. She somehow juggled her schoolwork, books, backpack, cup and plate over to one of the tables and sat down to eat and read. Who:
