It was the beginning of a new school year and Peter was hoping he would finally figure out what he wanted to do for a major. He was reaching the end of his rope and it was finally time to make a decision. He had a meeting with his advisor set for the end of the week and that might finally shed some light on what he wanted to do and help in the decision making. But for now he was ready to head to his last class and then get head out for his shift at the coffee shop. He hitched the backpack a little higher on his shoulder as he set off down the path.
Pietro was very much enjoying his classes so far, he was busy with a full load of them along with a part time job and hobbies but he thrived on that. Being busy was good and it was helping his running practice going from place to place, he was shaving time off his record which was pleasing him. Today however one of his classes had been moved to a room he’d not been in before and he was a little turned around as to where it was. “Excuse me” he asked in heavily accented english, “Do you have a moment to help?”
The guy in front of him caught him by surprise, but Peter was more than happy to help people out when they needed it. He adjusted the weight of his backpack as he took a moment to comprehend what the man had asked of him, “Oh sure. What do you need help with?” He could tell that he was also a student, so hopefully it was an easy question about the campus that he would be able to answer.
“Thank you” Pietro said, before holding out the paper with the new location on it, “My class has been moved to this room but I cannot find it. I am not sure I have been to that area of the school before” he admitted.
“Ahhhh, gotcha. That’s really easy to figure out. Let me check out your sheet” Peter knew this place like the back of his hand now, so it would be easy to help him out. He had a bit of time between his classes, so he was more than willing to help direct him in the right direction. The building he needed to go to now wasn’t too far from their location, “Alright, that’s just over to the left. I can walk you over if you want me to.”
“Are you sure you have time? I do not want to make you late for your own class” Pietro said, though he would never turn down the chance to get to know a new friend. He found most of the students here to be very friendly and nice people, he had a number of friends on his course already.
“Oh trust me, I’ll be good. I got a bit of time before my next class and we’re not very far away,” Peter answered him with a bright smile. It was natural to help people out and make new friends, so he didn’t mind if he was late. Most of his professors knew him and never bothered him if he was a few minutes late, “I’m Peter, by the way.”
“Then thank you very much” he said, holding out his hand, “Pietro” he grinned, “Pleased to meet you” Mostly he’d found that a lot of the professors managed to work out who they needed to keep an eye on and who they didn’t, luckily he fell into the latter category.
“What are you studying, Pietro?” the name took a moment to roll off his tongue. It was almost similar to his, but certainly a different country of origin. It was always interesting how many different people from around the world ended up at this school. He shook Pietro’s hand before heading off in the right direction.
“Kinesiology” he replied, “So far it is very enjoyable and I have good teachers” Peter seemed friendly enough and it amused Pietro that they almost had the same name. “What about you? You are studying here too yes?”
“Are you going to be involved in sports or physical therapy?” Peter didn’t know anyone else who was studying that, so he wasn’t sure what kind of career path that would lead to, “And yeah, I study here. I’m undeclared still. Just can’t quite put my finger on what I want to get a degree in. I’m starting to lean towards psychology though.”
“I am not yet sure. Perhaps teaching or coaching but there are many options to consider” he replied with a smile before nodding, “I have noticed there are many people who are still to decide. It is good you have a chance to try it out and see what you will most enjoy” The scholarships he and Wanda received led them down a certain path but they were both happy with it.
“That would be a lot of fun. Any specific sport that you’re most interested in?” Peter wasn’t quite sure what kind of athlete Pietro would be just by looking at him. But he knew enough that you usually would only teach or coach a sport you truly had a passion for, “And yeah, I’ve always been a little indecisive, so it’s good to try things out. I’ve gotta buckle down soon though if I want to graduate on time.”
“Running is my passion” Pietro told him, “But I will try anything I can. I surf, climb, swim, weight lift, and I’ve recently started learning martial arts” Pietro did anything and everything he could, he had a limitless supply of energy which he found allowed him to enjoy many different sports. “Ah of course, well you mentioned psychology before. Perhaps you have discovered what is for you and now just need to take that step”
“Wow, I’m impressed. I’ve done surfing and swimming before and a little bit of rock climbing, but I’ve not as active as I really should be,” Peter was always impressed with people that were more athletic than he was. It took a lot of skill to be able to pull off all those activities, “And yeah, I may just have to talk to my advisor and get it all sorted out. It’s good to talk it out with people. Alright, we’re almost there. This is the building you’ll want to go in and it’s on the second floor. It gets a little confusing up there, so I’ll walk you to the door.”
Pietro smiled, “I have always been active, it has driven my sister crazy. I run everywhere and try to learn new things all the time” It just seemed to come naturally to him. “Thank you, you are very kind. America has been very good to us since we came here. It is reassuring to see so many good people”
“Haha, I bet it wasn’t that bad. But at least you’ve found something that you enjoy doing,” Peter commented with a smile as he held the door open for Pietro and then followed behind. Once they were up the stairs he lead him down a couple twisty hallways, “And I’m glad you’re having a good experience here. It would be horrible if everyone was mean to you.”
More than once Wanda had become exasperated at how active he was, Pietro didn’t do well when he had to stay still for long. So far he was doing well with school, though he did have a lot of outlets for his energy outside of it.
“Indeed” Pietro nodded, “But so far it has been very good. And there are so many things happening all the time. I have done half marathons and runs on a number of weekends”
“Oh wow. That’s really impressive,” Peter didn’t run that much, but he was always impressed with active people. Especially if they did it that often, which Pietro seemed to do. It didn’t take long when they finally reached the door, “And here we are. I’m glad you asked for help because you could probably get lost in these hallways. If you ever need help just let me know. Lemme write down my number and you can text me.”
“Thank you” Pietro said, with a nod, as much as he was getting used to this campus there were still areas he did not know. Perhaps he should take a run around it properly one day so he could commit it all to memory. “I hope I have not made you late for your own class” he said taking the number, he would text the other boy a thank you text so that Peter had his number too. “I will see you around Peter, and thank you again”
