Caleb walked into one of the breakrooms to find Spencer. The last time he had seen her she had been with Hanna. Of course he was curious as to how exactly she knew the blonde. He was curious about a lot of things when it came to Hanna. She was one of a kind, that girl.
He walked over to the table she was sitting at reading her book. “Hey,” he said taking a seat across from her. “What are you reading?”
Spencer was re-reading Lolita for the third time, preparing for whatever might be coming up in Mr. Grumpy’s English Class at UCI. She wanted to make sure she was prepared in case he called on her again. She raised an eyebrow as Caleb sat down across from her, and tipped the book back so he could read the title.
“Lolita,” he said reading the title of her book. “No clue what that is.” Caleb wasn’t much of a reader. School was never for him. Well maybe it would have been if he had some sort of support system but that just wasn’t how his life worked out. “Is it good?” he wasn’t all that great at small talk either, but he didn’t want to just jump into the Hanna topic.
“It’s… the story of a lecherous relationship between a grown man and a twelve year old girl,” Spencer explained. “And it’s praised for being high literature. Though, it’s not one of my favorites.” She put her bookmark in the book and set it down on the table, giving Caleb her full attention. He wanted small talk, he could have it. “Do you read?”
“That doesn’t sound like high literature to me,” but what did he know. Still who wanted to read about a grown man doing some little girl. Okay that wasn’t exactly what Spencer had said but it seemed like pretty much the gist of it. “Not much,” Caleb admitted.
“So how do you know Hanna?” Yeah small talk wasn’t his thing.
“Hey, don’t ask me, I’m not the one who labeled it as such.” Spencer said, smirking a little. She glanced down at the bookmark in the book. It had her name and contact info on it, along with “If lost, please contact”... that way she could sell it back to the school at the end of the semester, and still get it back if it was misplaced. Smart, right?
“She and I are close friends,” Spencer said, lifting her eyes to meet his. “We go to school together. How do you know Hanna?”
He had gotten that much. Considering Hanna had come to visit her at work. Spencer didn’t seem the type to let just any old acquaintance visit her at work. “Cool,” he commented settling back in his chair a bit.
“I met her at a store,” he wasn’t about to share just how he met Hanna. Close friend or not, he wasn’t sure if Spencer knew that secret about her. “Then again at a coffee shop. She ruined my shirt.”
“That sounds like Hanna,” Spencer said, playfully. Fondly. Spencer was obviously a big fan of Hanna, though she wasn’t so sure about this Caleb character and his interactions with her. Caleb before she knew he was interested in Hanna (romantically or otherwise)? Seemed like a nice guy. But once he started asking about her friend, Spencer was put on the defensive.
“How long have you known her?” Spencer asked, pulling up from her chair. She left the book at the table, but took her coffee mug over to the Keurig to pour herself another cup.
Caleb remained seated but swiveled slightly in his chair as as as as as Spencer moved to the coffee machine, keeping his eyes on her. “About a month now.” There were other things he wanted to know. Like had her father always been such a dick? But instead he decided to just shoot the same question back at her. “You?”
“Just a couple of weeks.” Spencer said, pouring the coffee. Then she grabbed some raw sugar packets to rip open and put in her mug. “I’m getting credit for school, which is great.” Then her phone buzzed. Spencer drew it out of her pocket and glanced at the screen. She frowned when she read the message.
“I should probably… get back to my desk.” She said, distractedly, turning to head out of the break room.
Well okay then. Clearly that conversation was done. But wait. “You left your book..” he called after her voice trailing off but it was too late. She was already long gone. He picked it up putting it in his backpack. He would hold on to it for now, for safekeeping.
