Gaz had been planning on proposing to Kitty at a Cubs game. But the game that had happened most recently they hadn’t been able to attend, and the next one wasn’t happening for quite some time. Impatient, Gaz didn’t feel like waiting for the next game. So she packed a bag for each of them and popped her head out into the living room.
“Hey. Wanna go to Chicago for the weekend?” Gaz smiled at her girlfriend. Hey, if she couldn’t propose to her at a game, she’d do it at a deep dish pizza joint in Wrigleyville. Close enough.
Kitty looked up from the tv, setting her controller aside. “Yeah? That sounds like fun. I need to stock up on Cubs gear anyway.” She had a mental list. It was about as long as Gaz’s legs, which were pretty long. “Should I pack an--or you already packed.”
“I packed a bag for you too, and made reservations at some fancy ass pizza place in Wrigleyville. AirBNB nearby too.” Gaz had figured a three bedroom condo would be nicer and closer to the baseball field than a hotel.
“Nice.” Kitty shut her game off and bounced to her feet. “Pizza and a bed and breakfast. That’s actually kind of romantic.” She took Gaz’s hand and tugged her closer. “Private plane or the super secret spy plane?”
“It’s AirBNB, it’s just someone’s condo. But there’s a weird appeal to doing it all over someone’s house that they’re letting us rent out for a weekend, you know?” Gaz smiled, wondering if the couple they were renting from knew what they were in for. “Spy plane, always.”
“Lets try not to break their furniture,” Kitty teased. She fished around in her pocket for her phone. “Okay, the Blackbird is on it’s way. Should be here in a couple of minutes. Head to the roof?”
Gaz nodded. “I don’t wanna buy shit for other people, but their kitchen is gonna be tainted forever,” she grinned. Heading outside, she jumped up to the roof, still carrying their bags. She really loved their life.
Kitty floated up after Gaz. She couldn’t jump, but her powers had their benefits. She grabbed Gaz’s hand and pulled her into the air for an impromptu dance while waiting for the jet. She loved dancing on air, especially with someone she loved.
The jet arrived a few moments later, and she helped Gaz tie down their bags before sauntering up to the controls. “We’ll be there in a little under an hour.”
Smiling, Gaz moved into a joyful waltz with Kitty, nuzzling close. “No problem. Kate, you seen Lockheed around? I wanted to ask him something.” Since her parents were kind of homophobic, Gaz figured Lockheed was the next thing Kitty had to family. Gaz wanted to do this right.
“He said he was taking a ‘vacation’ but he has a cell phone.” Kitty rattled off the number, like calling a purple dragon was a normal occurrence in an every day life.
Gaz nodded, putting the number into her phone. She texted him immediately. Going to propose to Kate. Marriage like. Man, she hoped Lockheed still knew who she was.
Bwah. Came his response. A moment later it was followed by a cautious looking Really?
Smiling, Gaz typed a reply. Really. Got a ring and everything. Is that okay with you?
Maybe. You good 2 her?
I try. I don’t like it when she’s sad. Gaz smiled at Kitty, hiding her phone’s face and going in for a kiss.
Kitty moved her hand to the back of Gaz’s neck, kneading lightly as she kissed her back. Gaz’s phone buzzed from another text but she took it from her girlfriend and tossed it onto a seat. Distractions were no longer welcome, and she programmed in the course blind.
Gaz hoped Lockheed had agreed to Kitty’s proposal, because it was gonna go down. She’d thought about doing it in the pizza place, but a proposal on the Blackbird actually seemed more romantic. “Hey, there’s a box in my bag. Present for you. You should get it. Please?”
Inside the box, there was a ring, nestled in velvet.
“I’m trying to make out with you.” Kitty pouted, but pulled away from Gaz and went to her bag. “I didn’t get you anything.” She pulled the box out, turning it over in her hands, then opened it. And stared, shock making her mouth form a little O. She looked at Gaz. “... is this…? Are you..?”
Smiling, Gaz moved to get down onto one knee. “We’ll make out after this, if you’re not mad at me.” Taking a deep breath, Gaz actually looked rather nervous and pale. “Katherine Anne Pryde, I’ve loved you since probably when I met you. I don’t know when I fell in love with you. It feels like I always have. And I wanna live with you forever. I don’t know if I can die, but if I do, I wanna do it being old with you. I wanna fight with you and make up with you and support you in everything you do, and be a mom with you and do weird normal shit with you.”
The demon was unaware of the fact she was actually tearyeyed. “I want to keep you safe. So much bad happens to you, Kate. I want to protect you and make sure more good happens. I was texting Lockheed to ask him permission, because your Mom’s a bitch, but ... Kate, will you marry me?”
Kitty had actually been on the receiving end of this once. In the dreams, it had been from Quill. And she'd stupidly said yes. There were reasons for that, none of which Kitty had really parsed through. But that was neither here nor there and was in fact a thousand miles away from her thoughts.
Because Gaz was on her knees. Gaz. Tough girl demon Gaz who thought no one could love her, who was hard to read and yet so transparent when she opened herself to someone.
When thinking about moments like these, Kitty had been so certain that she'd say no. That she didn't want to risk it. That marriage inherently meant she'd lose her person. It had always happened before. Xi'an had died. Rachel lost to the time stream forever. Kitty was...marriage shy. She felt like she was cursed to lose the ones she loved.
"You asked Lockheed?" Kitty smiled, her own eyes watering. She'd have expected Logan, but Lockheed was...touching. "Oh Gaz...It's terrifying. I didn't think I'd ever want this again."
And then she surprised herself by putting the ring on. "But I do."
Gaz liked Logan, but knew that his opinion wouldn’t sway Kitty if Kitty really wanted something. Lockheed and Kitty were family, though, so it had made sense to Gaz. Gaz felt her heart lurch when Kitty said she didn’t think she wanted to be engaged, as that was the result Gaz had both been expecting and dreading, but when Kitty put the ring on she bit her lower lip for a moment. She almost felt shy about the whole thing, but powered through it to kiss her fiancee.
Kitty kissed Gaz back, a fluttery, nervous and excited kiss. Maybe it made sense. Kitty was always the one rushing in and once she’d decided to stop rushing, it was up to Gaz to take that step. She cupped Gaz’s face and kissed her while helping her stand. “There’s… so much that could go wrong. But I can’t let my life be ruled by that fear. They’d want me to find happiness, and I want that happiness with you.”
“That’s what I figured. I thought you’d say no, but I wanted you to know that I want to spend my life with you. If I can even die. I just want to be with you, Kate. You make me want to do right.” Gaz wrapped her arms around Kitty, tiptoeing up to kiss her again. Gaz was shorter than everyone, and it pissed her off most of the time, but with Kitty it was okay.
“I love you. And… even if you could die, even if you were sick or whatever, I’d still want to spend whatever time we’re going to get with you.” It was important to Kitty that Gaz knew it wasn’t the potential unkillable ness that made her say yes. She touched her forehead to Gaz’s.
Gaz smiled and snuggled closer to Kitty. “I was going to do it at a Cubs game, but the next one is too far away,” she murmured. “I’m impatient.”
Kitty sank into a seat and pulled Gaz into her lap. She ran her hands up and down Gaz’s thighs, and kissed the top of her head. “I like this better. Nice and private, just us. I think that suits you better anyway, than some place loud and rowdy. Besides, the last time I dreamed about a proposal he did it in front of the entire galaxy.” Kitty made a face.
“Dick,” Gaz grumped. “Let me know if he shows up here, I’ll kick his ass.” Gaz didn’t like the idea of some weird intergalactic douchebag horning in on her wife-to-be. “I wasn’t gonna do it on the jumbotron. Just, ‘hey, hot dog, also engagement ring’.”
“If the mighty Star-lord shows his face I’ll let you know.” Kitty laughed. “I.. think I still like this better. Feels more spontaneous, and more like you.” She brushed some hair out of Gaz’s face. “But you’ve really put some thought into this.”
Gaz nodded. “I asked people if they thought the baseball game was too sappy, and I shopped around a while for your ring.” She let her head rest on Kitty’s shoulder, feeling a rare moment of vulnerability. “I wanted you to like it.”
“It’s gorgeous.” Kitty looked at the ring, resting her cheek in Gaz’s hair. She smiled, eyes tearing up again. “You’ve got a good eye, but I should have expected that.” Turning her head, she kissed Gaz’s and felt suddenly a little less scared of everything. “I love it.”
“I love you,” Gaz shrugged. It just made sense to Gaz: if you loved someone, you paid attention to their likes and dislikes, what they needed and what they were scared of. “I wanted to ask the twins too, but I didn’t know if you thought that’d be overstepping. I’m not their mom, but I can be their friend if they want me to.”
“I think they just want me happy. They know I’m lonely, and they know things can be dangerous these days.” Part of Kitty still worried they resented her for it. For moving on from their sister. But they’d talked about it and she thought they were mostly okay on that front. “But it doesn’t hurt that they like you.”
“They’re good kids. They have the kind of childhood I wish I’d had.” Gaz sometimes wondered how she’d have turned out if she’d had parents who gave a shit about her. “You’re a good mom.”
“You’ll be a good mom too,” Kitty assured her. “I promise.”
