The recent argument with Genma and Ranma had finally met it’s boiling point, they were no longer speaking. They’d spent the better part of the evening shouting until Genma had finally crossed a line, he’d told Ranma if he didn’t recognize his dream he was no longer recognized as family and Ranma didn’t even retort. No one had ever bothered asking his dream. He’d spent his life doing the things Genma wanted him to do with little question in return, and the second Ranma decided he might want something different-that was it.
Ranma refused to come back inside even when night fell, he was hungry and cross, but still he remained ontop of the roof, just lying there glaring at the stars starting to form in the sky. He had martial arts sure, but was that his design or Genma’s? He didn’t know and he was tired of it. His arms rested behind his head as he let his eyes close for a moment in attempt to gain a small amount of peace.
To say that Akane was worried was an understatement. Genma and Ranma fighting? That was normal. But never to this extent. It scared Akane in a way. Not the arguing, no. She and Ranma fought and argued plenty of times when backed into corners. But in the fact she had no idea what was going to happen and as frustrating and tiring it all was, Ranma was a constant. A loud annoying constant. But a constant.
The hours ticked on and Akane shook her head. Dinner was done and her father was trying to reason with Genma. Even he seemed to be shocked by this turn of events, especially since they had agreed to the terms of college to put off the wedding. She still got the guilt about how her mother would be disappointed in her if she didn’t go through with it or carry on the school since Nabiki would just sell it and Kasumi had no interest, but she didn’t think it would get to this point and she could tell that even her father was worried.
With everyone off doing something, Akane just made a plate of food before making her way onto the roof, setting it down beside her fiance before sitting as well to stare at the stars.
If Ranma had anywhere else to go he’d have gone there, but he didn’t. So on top of the roof he remained, feeling literally like nothing he did mattered. Why bother even trying at this point? Who cared if Genma did get reasoned with, he’d already said everything he wanted to say no bars held.
Ranma simply had no choices of his own and he hadn’t for a while, but he’d gone with it until recently.. He’d been fine with it until he discovered something he didn’t have anything else except martial arts when it came to filling out forms for college. Hobbies, martial arts. What did he do in time off? Martial arts. Did he even have a clue of what to do in school now? Nope. Big fat stupid Genma nope. Nobody had even asked him until they got to school and he had no answer.
“You didn’t have to do this.” The scent of food broke up his thought process. It could only really be two people doing it, Akane or Kasumi and he was pretty sure Kasumi couldn’t climb like this. Ranma was oddly quiet,. Arguing with Genma was normal, but this felt like betrayal to him.
“I know. But I wanted to.” And it was true. Akane well could have just left Ranma to himself, let his father seemingly win. But that wasn’t who she was, even when she was mad at Ranma, she wouldn’t have left him to starve on the roof.
The entire situation was a mess. The thought had been that going to college here would be good. It gave them a reprieve from the stress, or that had been the theory. But leave it to Genma to decide he didn’t care about the original plan, leave it to him to insult it and for what? True Akane was pretty sure her father was mostly going along with it because Kasumi had supported it and because to him, the original plan would still go forward but if this let there be peace in the house, small price to pay.
“You should get a say.” Akane should get a say. It was their life, their future. It wasn’t going to solve anything and she knew it. Just because she agreed with Ranma that they should be allowed to see if there were things other than martial arts that they wanted to do… That’s what people talked about in school before they graduated, finding themselves in college. It would be nice if they could as well, but here they were on the roof.
Ranma released a sigh of annoyance before he pick cautiously at the plate in front of him. He had to test the waters and make sure Akane didn’t cook it. As nice as she was being, he wasn’t ready to give up the ghost yet. The food seemed safe, so he took a bigger bite.
"I don't apparently. Pops made it pretty clear what my role is and how many fucks he doesn't give about me. I'm just bein’ used. " He'd suspected that bit to actually hear it was another wound entirely.
“It’s from dinner. Kasumi made it.” Yes, Akane was annoyed. She tried to cook, and while it wasn’t near as disastrous as her cooking in the dreams, she still could really only make basic things. The comment was made as Ranma took the first bite as she had figured out what he was doing before going back to staring up at the sky.
What she couldn’t do was fix this. Okay so she couldn’t fix a lot of things and often found herself just trying to keep up and focus on the things she could do (and then have her insecurities fed when she slept), but this? This was far beyond anything she could attempt to fix. Fights and bickering aside, it was never about something like what Genma had said and insinuated. There was never doubt that the two cared about one another.
Not like he was the only one being used in some way or the other. So Akane just looked over to her fiancee and sighed.
“Well, I know I’ve said it before, it might not be the same but you have me and Kasumi and dad..” Though given her father was just a more subtle version of Genma, he at least seemed to care, which was more than could be said about Ranma’s father. “I wish I could make him care but…” She shrugged helplessly. There was nothing they could do on that front.
"That ain't gonna happen unless you put teriyaki sauce on me and claim I'm food. " Ranma’s mood was shot. He even stopped eating. Just looking up at the sky was a little relaxing but it didn't ease his hurt entirely.
"We're eighteen, maybe we should get our own place. " He hadn't even thought about how that sounded before he said it.
“Unfortunately.” Because there was no use denying that Genma really only cared about himself and food. Akane could wish all she liked that she could change that, but it was just that. A wish, a futile one at that. Like wishing her mother were still alive.
Or Ranma could more or less suggest they move out? Okay. What just happened there? Surely he didn’t mean… No, that was insane. Legally they could do just that, but..what? So Akane just turned her attention back to Ranma in shock before shaking her head some. Right. Logic. Use logic.
“That costs money we don’t have.” There was always the option of moving into the dorms but who knew how that would go over. It would be a stepping stone away from living at home but it was still…. Were they actually discussing this?
"Right, money. " Ranma sighed and put his arms behind his head, his eyes closed. "I'm just stuck then. " A small frown remained on his features, he made no move to go back inside either, he wasn't going to anytime soon. Who the hell wanted to sleep in the same house as Genma anyway? It wasn’t like he had his own room to escape to. He shared one with his father.
Ranma turned on his side in an attempt to stop the obnoxious headache that threatened.
Money was like that. And thanks to both Genma and Nabiki and money issues, here they were. Things were working out well enough, they had a roof over their heads, food, a way to live. But money had caused all of this as well thanks to scheming and scams.
“We can look at campus housing maybe?” They had loans and grants to cover school, so that would be something. Really Akane just wanted to find some way to help. And then have Kasumi explain it to Soun, because that would make it go over better. In theory, any way. It was hard to know. But it would give them breathing room as well.
Though it did seem that it was going to be a long night on the roof.
The thought of asking Nabiki for money was way out of the question. Asking her would result in bad. He rested an arm under his head as he lie there looking at the various pieces of their roofing. It wasn’t the first time he’d spent out on the roof, but it probably was for Akane.
“Do you really think they’d even let us do it? We’d have to do it without them knowing somehow, and are you okay with that?” Soun was more protective than Genma was. Soun actually seemed to give a damn, if Akane left he’d probably start bawling and ain’t nobody had time for that.
At least with student loans, Nabiki wasn’t involved. She’d probably try to find a way to be, but Akane had faith she could make sense of the forms so that they wouldn’t need to use her. Akane didn’t mind the roof, she liked the view, but the reasoning for being out there was a bit depressing.
It was a valid concern.
“I think it depends. If we can get Kasumi on our side…” And given she seemed to know it was better to leave them be instead of push things, it was possible. Because leaving without saying anything? That would lead to a headache and her father searching and panicking and being his normal and intense overprotective self. Did she feel bad that things like that meant having Kasumi more or less convince their fathers (well, Soun, who in turn somehow convinced Genma)? Of course. But it was also about knowing how to make things work with less of a headache.
Ranma sighed at that and nodded. Kasumi was always the saving grace. The one light in the insanity that was the Saotome’s and Tendo’s. How in the world had she not gone insane yet from being the sounding board for so many?
Ranma looked up at the sky as a shooting star sailed past his eyes. If he had a wish it would be to choose his own path for once. Akane wasn’t alone in the fact that she wanted her own choices. Ranma had also gotten the short stick in that direction. He rested his arms behind his head idly.
“Somethin’s gotta give.”
