Anna was out the door in just a couple of minutes. Overhearing Stefan and Caroline’s conversation was an accident, but it spurred her into action. She climbed up out of bed, grabbed her keys and cell phone, and bolted out the door. She was still in her pajamas, but at least she’d slipped into her Uggs, so her feet weren’t wet or cold.
It wasn’t until she was walking down the hallway toward Ezra’s apartment that she realized she probably should have brushed her teeth. Or her hair. Or both. She should have put on a bra. She wrapped her arms around herself after she knocked on his door. If he’d really just… she wanted to see him. She needed to talk to him after… after everything.
It had been a strange morning for Ezra to say the least. He had been woken up thanks to a fucking dream gunshot wound from A. God, she was evil. And then he was healed by his vampire friend. Because apparently he had a vampire friend now.
Once Stefan left, Ezra took a shower and then headed down to the basement (where the laundromat was) to wash his sheets. They were covered in blood. His blood. Not something he wanted to be reminded of. He might have to just throw them out, but he’d try the whole washing them thing first.
Now he was back in his apartment in jeans and a t-shirt enjoying a cup of coffee as he tried to absorb everything that had happened to him that morning and considering cancelling his classes for the day. That’s when he heard the knock at his door. Coffee mug still in hand he went to answer it.
Anna. She was one of the last people he was expecting to see this morning. Or ever. Could his morning get anymore eventful? “Hi?” he greeted a bit unsure of himself as as as as as he took in Anna’s appearance. Pajamas, messy hair, had she just woken up? Why was she here so early? “Are you okay?”
And then Ezra was standing there in the doorway, looking normal. Not bloody and broken, and not vampire-ish. Anna let out a gush of air she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, and relief washed over her in a warm flush. She broke into a small smile.
“Hi.” She said, remembering that night she’d come over here and kissed him. It would probably work again, wouldn’t it? Only now she hadn’t been compelled, she didn’t have the guts. Or did she?
Anna nodded in response to his question as as as as as as she stepped forward, close up against him. She had to go on her toes to bring her face up to his, and leaned in to press a kiss to his lips.
His morning had certainly turned around. From almost dying (okay maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration) to Anna kissing him. Of course he returned the kiss wrapping one arm around her to pull her further into the apartment. The other he used to shut the door behind her. No need for his neighbors to walk by and see. He should get dream shot more often if this is what he was going to wake up to.
No more getting dream shot. That was Anna’s vote. His reaction was a pleasant one--she’d half expected him to push her away. But being tugged into his apartment was definitely a step in the right direction. Now she really wished she’d put on a bra or brushed her hair or whatever.
Anna pulled back after a moment to look up into his eyes. “Stefan said you got shot.”
Oh. So she had known about that. Is that why she was over? Now that he could have died she changed her mind about him? He wasn’t sure how he felt about that. Ezra sighed dropping his arm from around her waist and taking a step back. “In the dreams,” he confirmed. “It wasn’t a big deal. I’m guessing Stefan is the friend that bit you?”
Anna’s hands fell when he stepped back. She wrapped them around herself, self-consciously covering her chest again. “Yes. I didn’t want to tell anyone about… about him. It wasn’t my place. That’s why I didn’t say anything to you when it happened, and… well, and there’s something else. There are other things Vampires can do to humans.”
He didn't blame her for not wanting to share what Stefan was. He understood that. Ezra wasn't exactly about to go share it with the world himself. He was more confused and maybe even upset by her whole attitude since his birthday. And now she was just going to show up kissing him again and act like everything was fine? He had gotten swept up in it for a minute but that was it. This wasn't okay.
"Oh yeah? What else can vampires do?" He asked trying to keep his tone as neutral as possible. "Why are you here, Anna?"
“I…” She’d thought about it for the whole drive over here. What was she going to say when she got here and had kissed him? Or when he’d pushed her away? Now that she was inside his place (had it always felt so wonderful in this room?) and her heart thundering at the kiss she’d just given him (and he’d given her in return) she couldn’t remember what she was going to say.
“I’m here because I remember now.” She had to force the words out. Her insides were tight with both fear and excitement. “Vampires can force humans to do things--things they might never have done before. And when I kissed you, it was because Caroline told me to. I couldn’t refuse. But then she felt bad that she’d given me that command, and she made me forget. She didn’t realize I’d actually done it.”
Oh, God. Anna winced a little. Did any of that make sense?
No it didn’t make that much sense. And all Ezra heard was she kissed him because Caroline told her to. On some level he understood that vampires had some sort of mind control or something. He was adjusting to the vampire thing rather well. Probably came with being injured from dreams and then magically healed by blood. But everything with Anna, well that was more complicated.
“So you only came over to kiss me because Caroline made you?” now there was some bitterness in his tone. “Did she make you come over here now too? Or can you not tell me that?”
“No.” Anna said, frowning at his question. How could he even ask that? “No,” she repeated, shaking her head. “I wanted to. I was just… too afraid to. And I think she knew that. So she made me do it. And I was really glad when I did,” Anna insisted, flushing deeply at the fresh memory. “I had a lot of fun. And then… then she made me forget it all. She says she didn’t know that I’d done it, she thought she was saving me embarrassment.”
Anna turned her eyes down to her slippers, feeling ridiculous and embarrassed. “I’m sorry. I heard you were hurt, and I wanted to make sure you were okay, and… I can go.”
Ezra wasn’t exactly sure what to believe. But she had come back. And kissed him again. Although who new if that was just because he had been dream shot. “I’m okay,” Ezra replied because he was okay. Confused, but okay. “You don’t have to go,” he sighed taking a few more steps back so he could sit down on his couch.
He still wasn’t sure what to do about the whole kiss that had just happened. But he wasn’t ready to go in for another one. Not when he was still trying to grasp everything.
Anna’s heart fluttered a little when he said she didn’t have to go. She was still cautious, though, not sure how he was taking all of this. It was a lot to ask him to believe, she knew, but it was also the truth. She wanted him to know how much she regretted not remembering, that she understood he must have been confused, that it must have sucked so much. If she could take it all back, she would.
“I’m really sorry.” Anna said, moving over to sit down. She kept distance between them, giving him his space. “I honest to God didn’t remember.”
“Yeah I got that,” was his reply. He still wasn’t sure if he was buying it but it wasn’t like it was the strangest thing that had happened to him all day.
He sighed.. again. “Look,” he began. “You’re my student. As disappointing as it was when you act- didn’t remember anything it was also for the best. Anything happening between us wouldn’t be a good idea.”
“But…” Anna frowned a little at his words. Did that mean he wasn’t interested in… in her? Or in something with her? “Ezra, I like you. A lot. And--And I’m not going to be your student forever,” she added, trying to come up with a counter to his argument. “Don’t you like me, too?” She added, sounding quite a bit more child-like than she’d hoped.
Of course he liked her, but that didn’t suddenly make this right. Sure it was a different situation than his dreams. Anna wasn’t in high school. Still he wasn’t sure about all this. “I do,” he finally responded, choosing to be honest with her, but he refused to look at her. Instead he looked straight forward, focusing on one of the bookcases he had in his little apartment. He didn’t know what he would do if he dared to look at her. “That doesn’t change anything.”
"Ezra," Anna repeated gently as as as as as as one of her hands reached for his. It was awkward as she stretched her arm out, but her fingers wrapped around his warm hand. She waited for him to look at her, waiting a long moment to be sure she had his full attention. "It changes everything."
Ezra finally turned his head to look at her. How was he supposed to resist her when she was looking at him with those brown eyes? He used his free hand to brush a strand of hair out of her face before cupping her cheek, going in for another kiss. Consequences be damned.
