Ezra wasn’t sure about this whole barbeque thing. But he figured it was time he hung out with Stefan somewhere other than a bar. He wouldn’t mind meeting some of Stefan’s friends either. His social life was lacking at the moment. The Professor really needed to get out more.
He arrived at the address Stefan had given him, dressed in board shorts and a t-shirt. It was a casual day and he wasn’t teaching a class. He had casual clothing too. After ringing the doorbell Ezra couldn’t help but notice how nice the house was. Big too. He didn’t know Navy Officers made that much. Impressive.
Stefan had a whole lot more control over his hunger than he’d had a week ago. Ten days ago. He was sure he could be around humans, one… more than one? Having Ezra here along with Anna would be a test. And Stefan was sure he was going to pass.
So he came to the door to answer it, and broke into a smile at the sight of his human, normal, non-vervain poisoned friend. “Ezra! Hi! Come on in,” he said, and stepped to the side, holding the door open. “The girls are out back.”
“Thanks,” Ezra said, stepping inside the house and followed Stefan out to the back. Time to meet these girl roommates of his. See if they were as attractive as Stefan described. Maybe it would finally get his mind off Anna. Speaking of, she was right there. Laying out in her bathing suit. Ezra froze.
What the fuck?
Caroline turned when she heard the back door open. Her eyes widened, mouth dropped slightly open when she saw just who Stefan’s friend was. “Stefan!” Caroline exclaimed jumping up off the chaise lounge and grabbing a towel to cover herself up. Her English Professor so didn’t need to see her in her skimpy pink bikini. “You didn’t tell me your friend was my English Professor!”
Anna was laying out in her bathing suit. It wasn’t as skimpy as Caroline’s, but it was still in two pieces. More like it was made for speed than for … sexiness? Anyway, she wasn’t expecting her English Professor--the guy she had the biggest crush on--to come walking out the back sliding glass door. Anna sat up abruptly and pulled her sunglasses off. That only blinded her. She put them back on as her cheeks paled.
“Caroline!” Stefan, who hadn’t really noticed the reaction from the girls (as he’d been walking behind Ezra) mocked Caroline’s outburst. But then he heard her next words and raised an eyebrow. “...your English Professor?” He didn’t know. He’d honestly had no idea.
“Yes!” Caroline yelled back at her best manly friend. “God Stefan! Do you like not know what your friends do for a living?” she still had the towel wrapped tightly around her body. Choosing to just focus on Stefan instead of her teacher, because weird. So much for her manners.
Ezra didn’t even notice that Caroline wasn’t paying any attention to him. He just stood there frozen, eyes glued to Anna. This was the last thing he was expecting today. “Uh…” the English Professor was at a loss for words at the moment. “Do you need help in the kitchen?” he asked Stefan as a way to get him out of this situation.
Anna sat up and pulled on her robe. It was terrycloth, and covered enough of her that she didn’t feel self conscious. But she was starting at Professor Fitz. Her eyes never left his face. They were hidden behind her shades, but they were there. What was he thinking? ...did he like what he saw? Anna’s cheeks went from pale to crimson very quickly.
Stefan glanced over at Caroline with a shrug. What did he care what his friends did for a living? But then Ezra had his attention again. He nodded. “Oh, yeah. Let’s get that meat on the grill.” ...he wasn’t looking forward to this part. At least the marinade made the smell of the raw meat a bit less appealing.
Stefan turned to lead Ezra back into the kitchen.
Once the boys were gone Caroline turned her attention to Anna. “Small world,” she said with a shrug, towel still wrapped tightly around her. Of course she noticed Anna’s pink cheeks. She couldn’t blame her. Caroline was embarrassed too, but Anna seemed more so. Did she still have a thing for creepy teacher?
“Really small,” Anna said, distractedly. She was still staring off after Stefan and Ezra, having watched her professor’s backside as the pair retreated into the house. Board shorts?? Really? Not that Anna minded. To be honest, she’d imagined sitting with him in the hot tub, without the others around. And that was one of the reasons she’d gone so pink.
Stefan led the way back into the kitchen and to the fridge. Most of the prep work was done, though they could open a couple of beers while they poured chips into bowls and the like. For Ezra and Anna. The irony of the situation hadn’t escaped Stefan. Only Ezra and Anna were exclusively people food eaters. “So, Caroline and Anna are in your class?” There goes his flight of fancy of setting Ezra up with one of his roommates. Or, there was still Lexi, mayhaps?
“I’m gonna go get like dressed or something,” Caroline just felt dirty now. So she took off for her room at vampire speed. Blurring right past the boys in the kitchen. However while she was in her bedroom she used her vamp hearing to listen in on their conversation.
“Yeah,” Ezra confirmed to Stefan once they were out of earshot of the girls (little did he know). “You know that student I told you about? The one that I kissed and then she acted like she forgot about it?”
Stefan sensed Caroline zooming past, but didn’t think too much on it. He was more interested in what Ezra was saying as he poured chips into a bowl. “How could I forget a story like that?” But then his hand stilled as he realized… “It was Caroline or Anna?” Stefan asked, eyes going a little wide with surprise.
“I don’t know,” Ezra replied. “You forgot the girl you made out with so how can I expect you to remember who I kissed?” he would be smirking right now if he wasn’t still in shock. “Anna,” he added answering Stefan’s question.
About that... Stefan thought, but he didn’t bring it up in that moment. He remembered now. And it seems that he wasn’t the only person that Caroline compelled to forget that week. Damn it, Caroline. Ezra really liked Anna. And it wouldn’t surprise Stefan if Anna really liked Ezra, too.
“Oh.” Stefan’s mind was whirring. He’d have to talk to Caroline about this, he thought as as as as as as he glanced out the window. Anna was still sitting on her lounge chair, though now she was wrapped in a blanket and chewing on her fingernails.
“I wouldn’t give up on her if I was you,” Stefan said to Ezra without looking at him.
Ezra wasn’t so sure he was going to take Stefan’s advice. It seemed like it was for the best that Anna remain only his student. There was just the issue that one of his good friends lived with her. So much for hanging out in Stefan’s hot tub.
“Yeah, maybe,” he replied though his voice sounded far off. “But hey, thanks for inviting me to this barbecue. This is just… too weird for me right now. I think I should head out.”
Stefan nodded. He could understand. If a girl he liked and kissed forgot all about it, he’d be pretty upset about it all, too. So he turned to walk Ezra to the front door. “We’ll set up something for another time, then. Go out to the pub.” They could have their drinks some other time, at a bar where the girls were technically too young to get in.
“Thanks,” Ezra said before walking out the door. That was not at all how he was planning the afternoon to go.
Caroline was still in her room, now with a pair of jean shorts and tank top on over her bikini. She had overheard the whole conversation and instantly knew what happened. Anna had kissed Professor Fitz the night Caroline told her to and now she had forgotten all about it. The blonde vampire had to admit she felt a little guilty about the situation.
Stefan showed up at Caroline’s bedroom door. It was hanging open enough that he could knock on it, and it swung open the rest of the way. He leaned against the frame, folding his arms across his chest. “Can I come in?”
“What’s up?” Caroline asked as her way of allowing Stefan to enter. “Where did Professor Fitz go?” Like she didn’t already know but still. Stefan didn’t need to know she was listening in on his conversation.
Stefan stepped through the doorway and passed by a giant teddy bear on a chair in the corner. He turned to it and held a hand out. “Whoa there, Grizzly. Stay.” Beat. “Good boy.”
Then Stefan brought his attention back to Caroline. “...he left. Things were awkward because, apparently, they kissed and then she suddenly forgot about it.” He raised an eyebrow. “Sound like anyone you know?”
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh at Stefan’s interaction with Grizzly. It was pretty cute even if it was also ridiculous. But that basically summed up Stefan Salvatore - cute and ridiculous.
And then it was on to the more serious topic and Caroline’s big mistake. “Oh,” she replied her voice soft. “Well you know he probably shouldn’t be kissing Anna anyway. She’s his student,” she pointed out trying to cover up her own mistake. “Plus he like totally hit on my friend Hanna or something. Kept her after class for no reason. He’s bad news.” Okay she didn’t know if that was the reason he had kept Hanna behind but still.
Stefan sighed. “I know you’re trying to protect Anna from what happened when you didn’t have your humanity on, but making her forget an entire week… It’s not fair. If she made the mistake of kissing Ezra, that’s her mistake, Caroline. And the only way she’ll learn from it is if you let her remember it.”
Caroline sighed. Stefan had a point. “Fine, but if he hurts Anna I might eat him.” Okay she wouldn’t eat him but she would hurt him. In some way or another. “This was so not how I was planning my birthday to go.”
That made Stefan sigh. He lifted an arm to wrap around her shoulders. “I’ll make it up to you. Somehow.” Then he gave her a little tug toward the hallway. “C’mon, let’s go feed that vervain-soaked, human creature in the backyard.”
