Even though Hanna had told Caleb she was going to call him he honestly hadn’t believe it or put much thought into it. She was the pretty, smart, funny, rich, girl who had so much going for her and he was the high school dropout who never stayed in one place too long. However she had called, the day after he saw her at the park, and Caleb was going to make good on his promise to do something fun.
Walking up to her house he actually began to feel nervous. Part of it was probably because he was about to take Hanna out, but it was also because her house was nice. Huge. Bigger than any of the houses he had ever been around. He could tell the neighborhood was classy too. And Caleb, well he was out of place. That wasn’t going to stop him though, he walked right up to the door and confidently rung the bell.
Despite the fact Ashley did whatever she could to keep Hanna from worrying about money and how they would make ends meet, that they had things under control, the blonde knew better. It was part of why she still lived at home instead of going to the dorms. It was cheaper. Still, to her, it was just a home and she didn’t think much about it or how it would appear to anyone else.
As promised, she had indeed called Caleb. Part of it was curiosity on what he would come up with for something they could do. Part of it was just wanting to spend time with him. It was strange but she wasn’t exactly going to question it either. Having just finished with her make up, Hanna blinked as she heard the doorbell rignt. A look to the clock showed that she should have had a bit more time but… no matter.
“I’ve got it, mom!”
With that, the blonde grabbed her bag and bounced down the stairs and opening the door with a smile.
“You’re early.”
And she was beautiful, but he kept that tidbit of information to himself. “Nice place,” he said instead. “You ready?”
The plan was for him to drive since Hanna had no idea where they were going. Caleb wanted to surprise her. He had a car, granted it was stolen but Hanna didn’t have to know that piece of information either. It wasn’t anything flashy, an old Honda that looked like something Caleb could actually afford. That was part of the key to not getting caught after all.
“Thanks.” Not like Hanna had much to do with the house. She helped her mom decorate sure, but it was the home she had grown up in (and Ashley had been adamant about not letting Tom’s leaving mean they had to move and change everything) but it was still nice to hear. “Yeah, I am.” Purse over her shoulder, Hanna looked towards the kitchen, “I’ll be back later!”
“Have fun, Hanna.”
Thankful her mom was busy in the kitchen so that she didn’t come to investigate, Hanna stepped outside and closed the door, locking up. Instead she just headed to the car so that they could go as she really had no idea what the plan was. Though she had a feeling it would be something she wouldn’t expect, which was sort of the point.
Caleb led Hanna to his car, holding the passenger door open for her. On the drive over he made small talk asking about school, her relationship with her mother, things like that. However he still didn’t tell her where they were going no matter how much she asked. Eventually they arrived at the Smash Shack. Again Caleb made sure to open the car door for her. Even if this wasn’t a date he still had manners.
Inside the building was set up like a shooting range. With separate partitions but instead of guns and targets it was just walls and stacks of plates. “You ready for this?” he raised a brow not exactly bothering to explain. He figured it was self explanatory, besides he wanted to see just what Hanna did.
The ride over was fine, even if annoying since she didn’t get any clues whatsoever on what Caleb had in mind for what they were doing. Which rude. Okay maybe not, but still. He seemed to have prepared in how to avoid any and all questions she came up with in whatever way she did.
Though once inside? Yeah. She was very confused.
“Plates?” This was definitely not something Hanna had ever seen before and she looked around curiously and critically in order to get a feel for what they were to be doing. Which was… throwing plates. “You come up with some very interesting ideas, Caleb.” She was slightly doubtful because really, throwing plates, but also intrigued and, well, spending time with Caleb. So she just gave a slight shake of her head in relenting to the fact that this was what he had planned for them.
“How exactly did you find this place?”
“There’s a place like it where I’m from,” he shrugged. It was true, there was a similar place back in Pennsylvania and he had been a few times. It was a good place to get rid of stress. His life was nothing if not stressful, but he figured it would work well for anger too. Judging from the scene he witnessed yesterday he assumed she had some anger at her father. He certainly would if he were her. In fact he kind of did.
“Just try it. Trust me.” With that he put on the protective glasses, which weren’t the most attractive things but hey safety first, picked up a plate and tossed it at the wall. It shattered to pieces. A large grin spread across his face. Yeah that felt good.
Fair enough. Though while it seemed Caleb might have anger at her father, Hanna just had disappointment. Which could be turned into anger. It had been briefly and she could easily harness it again.
“I’m not sure why, but I do.” It was very peculiar. And the part of Hanna that had a love of all things Disney couldn’t help but note the similarities between Aladdin and Jasmine in that exchange. Whatever, it fit. So she just took a pair of the protective glasses and put them on, before following suit in picking up a plate and tossing it. Surprisingly well. And she’d be lying if she said it didn’t feel good when it shattered. Because she totally smiled.
Not having much of a childhood Caleb unfortunately didn't catch on to the similarities to Aladdin like Hanna had. He hadn't seen many Disney movies. The only one he could remember was Pocahontas. However, he could tell she was enjoying herself by that smile on her face. A smile he was growing quite fond of. Not to mention how adorable she looked in those glasses.
"I knew you'd like it." There was a smug look on his face as he picked up his next plate and threw it. "So your boyfriend doesn't mind you coming out with me tonight?"
It would break Hanna’s heart if she knew that Caleb didn’t know Disney that well. But no matter. She would easily get him introduced to it once she found out. For now, she would be very amused by the similarities and do her random quotes. Because she could. Besides, the most important part was that they were enjoying themselves. And Hanna definitely was.
“Should I be worried that you know such things?” So what, teasing was all well and good, though she did shrug at the question about a boyfriend. “No boyfriend, so you’re safe.” It was sort of sad but given the nature of things, her relationships tended to not work out as she looked for love in all the wrong places to try and make up for the sad state of affairs with her father. “Should I worry about any jealous girlfriends”
It was a little hard for Caleb to believe that Hanna didn’t have a boyfriend. But he had to admit he was a little happy that she didn’t. He almost laughed at the mention of him having a girlfriend. It had always been kind of impossible with his life style. Sure he had the occasional hook up, but never anything serious. Caleb never got close to anyone. He always felt alone, even when he was with people.
“Oh yeah,” he teased. “You should watch out. She might just throw a plate at you.” He threw another plate himself, laughing when it shattered. “Nah, no girlfriend. That’s not exactly my thing.” That was his own way of letting her know he was bad news. He enjoyed spending time with her, more than he probably should. He actually didn’t feel so alone with her. But he also didn’t want to get her tangled up in his fucked up life.
No one had caught Hanna’s attention since the last disaster that could be qualified as a relationship. Supposedly it was a good thing, taking time for herself. Hanna read it differently but she also had standards. So she just shrugged as he said she’d have to watch out for flying plates.
“Good thing I’m good at dodging and can handle myself then.”
Because she would totally fight someone. She enjoyed his presence, she enjoyed spending time with him. Even if it was all in jest. “Ah. I see.” Well, that was disappointing. Though one could never tell. He might change his mind on that front. And if not, friendship also worked.
“Get plates thrown at you often?” he teased again at her comment. “And here I thought I was showing you a whole new world. I’m just going to have to up my game for next time,” and yes he did plan on there being a next time. Just because girlfriends weren’t exactly his thing didn’t mean he couldn’t spend more time with Hanna. As friends. Although he did notice the look of disappointment on her face when he mentioned girlfriends weren’t his thing. He would just have to keep his distance. Not get too close.
“Oh yes. Mad tea parties and the like.” Because if she could keep up Disney references, she would. The fact he mentioned a whole new world just amused her as he had already pulled an Aladdin on her. Now they were at A Whole New World. “Oh, so there’s going to be a next time then? I look forward to what you can come up with for that.” Oh well. Friends was better than nothing, so she just grinned. Yes, it was a challenge to see what he could come up with.
Caleb still wasn’t catching on to the whole Disney reference thing. However, mad tea parties did sound familiar. Like something he had heard about before. “Remind me to never attend one of your tea parties,” not that Caleb would ever go to a tea party anyway.
A smirk appeared on his face. “Ever been to a wedding in space?” He highly doubted that considering he didn’t even know such things were possible. And honestly, who just went to space? If Hanna had ever been to space in general he would be shocked, but probably not as shocked as he was when he found out his friend was getting married on some spaceship.
“But why, they’re fun!” The comment was made with a laugh as she threw another plate, which shattered quite satisfactorily. Even if Caleb was unaware of the references, they amused Hanna so whatever. And if necessary, she would gladly introduce him to the wonders that were Disney films. Well, once she knew that it was going to be need to be a thing.
Or… he could ask about going to a wedding. In space? What the actual hell? She had seen interesting things mentioned on the network but a wedding in space… that was new.
“I can definitely say I have never been to one of those. Not in space, anyway.”
“I’ve never been to one either,” he informed her letting her throw the plates for now. He had already thrown a good amount and he was enjoying watching her throw them. It was clear she was having actual fun. Not tea party fun. “I’ve actually never been to a wedding,” he admitted. He never knew anyone who had gotten married. Not like Caleb got all that close with people in general. “I’ve been to space though,” he added with a smirk. He wasn’t bragging, just informing her. He had been to the venue so he knew it was safe.
“How do you feel about going to one?” he almost added as friends but they had already sort of gone over that topic. No need to state it again. “It’s next weekend.”
And he was inviting her to a wedding. Because that was totally a thing just friends did. Or well, actually, sure it was possible. Even if she wasn’t sure what this in space bit was, Hanna would always take up an opportunity to dress up.
“Sure, I’d like that.”
Okay so maybe Caleb did know there were some implications that went with asking a girl to a wedding, but there wasn’t anyone else he would want to go with. And he did just tell Hanna he would show her something she had never seen before. He was true to his word if nothing else.
“Yeah I’m not sure how common the going to space thing is. This place is weird.” That was Caleb’s thoughtful insight to it all. Best way to sum it up, really.
Someone would have to be really out of touch with reality to not have even a remote idea about the implications asking someone to a wedding had. Whatever it was though, whatever was developing between them? Hanna was willing to see how it played out. Besides, wedding in space was definitely one way to keep his word on taking Hanna somewhere she never would have been before.
“I am definitely seeing that. I mean, half the time I think this is all some episode of Punked.” Like some mass social experiment, the power of suggestion or something. It was more logical and believable than what people claimed to be reality.
So Hanna hadn’t drank the kool-aid. She didn’t seem to believe that the network was a link to another world and she didn’t talk about weird dreams. He hadn’t seen her post about any on that network either. He couldn’t help but be relieved that she was on the same page as him when it came to that whole thing.
“Let me guess, you just want to see Justin Bieber jump out at you?” he laughed picking up one of the last few plates from the stack and tossing it. There was one left. “For you,” he made a sweeping gesture at it with his hand, a smirk on his face ready to watch Hanna throw.
Definitely no kool-aid drinking had happened. Part of her was curious what the big deal was, but the other part thought it was all absurd because really. So until she had proof that there was something more to it, she was going to be wary.
“Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that!” Laughing with a shake of her head, Hanna grinned as she was given the last plate to throw, which she did. She was impressed. Who would have thought that throwing plates would be fun?
Caleb couldn’t even think of a response to that. Other than listing all the things wrong with Justin Bieber starting with his hair, but that probably wasn’t the way to go. Instead he just laughed stepping closer to Hanna and snatching the glasses off her face. “You won’t be needing these anymore,” now that there were no plates less. “Unless you wanted to go for another round?” he raised his brow dangling the protective glasses in front of her, his own still on his face.
It really wasn’t. Even if Hanna didn’t follow Justin Bieber anymore, she still would have felt the need to fight back. Just because, really. So instead she just blinked as Caleb took the glasses off her face because even though they had finished their pile of plates, she hadn’t made the connection to oh, take off the glasses. “We could, or we could do something else.”
Admittedly, Hanna didn’t know what else they could do, not off the top of her head that wasn’t like… getting coffee or something. But hey, options. Options were good!
“What did you have in mind?” he asked removing his own glasses. He had fulfilled his promise of taking her somewhere fun, and already made another one to take her to space which he would make good on. He figured it was only fair that she decide what they did next. Besides she had lived in the area a lot longer than he had. He was assuming that of course, but if she had been longer than two months? It beat him. And considering she was in college, but still lived in a house with her mother instead of the dorms, she had probably been in the area a while. He doubted her mom would buy a house just to be close to her. But then what did he know about mothers?
“Well there’s always getting coffee…” And then she paused because, hello. It was October. That meant Halloween. That meant the pumpkin farms would be up and those were sometimes fun to go through even if you didn’t plan on buying a pumpkin yet. But still! “Ever been to a pumpkin patch? I mean they’re a general organic farm but since it’s October, pumpkins.”
“No,” just like with the Disney movies that was another childhood experience he missed out on. “Pumpkin patch it is,” he said leading her back out to the main area, stopping at the cash register to pay and turn in the glasses before they headed back out to his car. “You’re going to have to navigate for me.”
Hanna grinned because she felt proud of herself for coming up with something they could do that would be new for Caleb. True it was a sad reason because it was a childhood experience people tended to have, but if she got to introduce it to Caleb? Then she was happy. And it was just fun. Which was the point. “Yeah, definitely.” So to the car so she could give Caleb the directions for another adventure in bonding.
Caleb had his own grin that matched Hanna’s. Not only did he get to spend more time with her, by her own suggestion, but he was also going to experience something he never had before. Something that most people probably took for granted. He may have even been jealous of this sort of thing as a child but it was something he never would have thought to do on his own now. Of course Hanna would think of it though. Yeah that grin was not leaving his face. Looks like this night was going to be better than he originally thought.
