Katou couldn’t remember a time when he had been as happy and relieved as he was when Lina and Zee had managed to return his memories. He had never thought he’d be so happy to remember his shitty life, but right now every bad memory was a pretty good one. There were still holes, big, gaping holes, but it didn’t particularly matter. He hadn’t felt this much like himself in weeks and he’d take what he had, gaps or no.
He hadn’t played baseball since he was about twelve, before he had run away from home. But he remembered liking it back then, and so the batting cages with his, to use Jin’s own words, ‘almost boyfriend’ seemed like a good way to spend the evening. Or, at least a portion of the evening. Except for the fact that he wasn’t hitting very many of the balls that came his way. “This stinks,” he muttered, missing again, though he was grinning.
Jin had shown up as fast as he could to where Katou had said he’d be playing baseball. Jin had never felt so weak and useless as he had when the guy he cared about was losing his memories and there wasn’t a damn thing that he could do about it. He’d spent nights researching things, but in a world where magic didn’t seem to exist, that was useless. He’d slept, hoping he’d dream about some solution, some magic way to make things stop. He’d even read up on Shaolin monasteries, debating petitioning them, hoping maybe they’d see that he was one of them in some far off, dreamed of world, and that they’d help. Thankfully, someone else had been able to help. And granted that made Jin feel even more useless, he was glad. So he’d driven to the batting cage as fast as he could.
“How do I get the feeling that you’re going to be better at this than me?” Jin called out, grinning at the sight of Katou grinning.
“Then you’ve gotta suck major balls,” Katou snorted. “No pun intended.” He swung at another ball, and missed yet again, before he went to hand the bat off to Jin. “I guess I was never really that great. I had fun and all, but I only started playing because it was my old man’s favourite sport.” He had never really been one to bring up his father unless directly asked, and even then he usually tried to give some non-answer and change the subject. He’d spent a lot of time trying to forget all of that part of his life, but after he almost had he realized that maybe forgetting it wasn’t the answer he’d been looking for. His past was his, and it made him who he was today. He was the worst kind of fuck-up, but at least he was trying to change now.
Jin smiled, accepting the bat and smiling when Katou started to talk about his past. It meant that he remembered it, and while it may not have been the memories he’d wanted, Jin was glad that Katou could choose to acknowledge them if he wanted.
After feebly hitting a ball Jin thought he had the idea. “It’s not that I suck so much, and more that I’ve just never done this before.” He’d always been able to duck out of gym by helping teachers out with things.
“Not a baseball fan?” Katou asked, grinning a bit. “Or not a team-sports kinda guy?” He watched Jin swing, and while he was hardly an expert he did still have a couple tips up his sleeves. “You gotta rotate your hips more,” he said, moving to stand behind Jin so that he could place his hands on Jin’s hips and guide them and it totally wasn’t just an excuse to touch him. “Gives ya more power.”
“Not a team-sports guy. I hated gym.” He shrugged a shoulder, but couldn’t help leaning back a little bit when Katou came to stand behind him. “Power, eh? Okay, I’ll try.” His next hit was a bit better, and Jin was a bit bummed out that Katou had to take his hands off of his hips. “I liked martial arts and gymnastics.”
“Oh yeah, I skipped a lot of gym,” Katou said. “Though I guess I pretty much skipped all my classes.” He was a little bummed about taking his hands off of Jin himself, though he learned his lesson about standing too close behind a batter when he was a kid. “Gymnastics, huh? Gaaay,” he teased.
He frowned a little at Jin’s swing, not because it had been a bad swing or anything but because he was pretty much out of tips. “And uh, you need to relax your shoulders more,” he said, placing his hands on Jin’s shoulders as if that was somehow going to help them relax. He wasn’t sure if he had ever heard that particular piece of advice for baseball but it seemed to be pretty common sports advice in general and so it probably applied.
“Yes, they were, I got my first kiss after practice,” Jin retorted. Though once Katou’s hands were on his shoulders, Jin sighed contentedly. “Look, if you wanted sex, you should’ve suggested hotel room instead of baseball. Unless you have a weird locker room fantasy, in which case, why are we out here?”
“What? No, that’s not it.” Beat. “I mean, not entirely I guess.” There really wasn’t a time when Katou’d be opposed to getting laid. “I just.” He crammed his hands into the pockets of the hoodie he was wearing to cover up his fake arm, and looked off to the right, frowning. “kindawannatouchyouisall.” He was a touchy feely guy in general, it was kind of nice just knowing that Jin was there in front of him, and that he was real.
Jin smiled and looked around, trying to see if anyone was around. Nope, they were out of sight. “I was just teasing,” he murmured. He wrapped his arms around Katou and kissed him lightly. “I missed you too.” It had been awkward, knowing Katou was around, but at the same time, missing him like crazy.
Katou returned Jin’s kiss, and then hugged him tightly, burying his face into Jin’s shoulder. He hadn’t missed Jin per se, since it was hard to miss someone you didn’t even remember, but now that he had some of his memories back, the relief he felt at not having lost the bookish martial artist was remarkable. He wasn’t always great at expressing his feelings for people in words though, so all he muttered was “That’s kinda lame,” against Jin’s shirt. “But I’m glad that you stuck with me.”
“That’s me. The lamest badass,” Jin murmured into Katou’s ear. He couldn’t help but nip gently before releasing the hug, smiling broadly. “But you’re welcome. I mostly did it because you’re pretty.” Jin was teasing, quite obviously so, and also trying to match Katou’s demonstrative level. No reason to pour his heart out in public.
“The word you’re looking for is ruggedly handsome,” Katou snorted. Pretty indeed. He took another quick glance around just to make sure they were still alone, and then planted another kiss on Jin’s lips, keeping all the nervousness he felt out of his voice and off his face. “So long as you’re my lame badass.” There’d been a time in Katou’s life when his life’s motto of ‘no regrets’ meant not taking any chances on things that might backfire, but after dying a few times he realized that the things he regretted the most were the chances he never took, and he’d be damned if he was going to make those same mistakes.
“That’s two words,” Jin retorted. He couldn’t help but grin; it was good that not only was Katou somewhat sunny again, but also that he was feeling rather smartassed. Smartassery was a clear sign of feeling better. “I’ll be your whatever you want,” he murmured. Katou wanted him to be his something? Jin couldn’t help but grin into Katou’s shoulder. “So, you want me to be yours, hmm. That’s cute.”
Katou'd always been a little embarrassed at how easy it was for him to blush, and people calling him cute was almost always a surefire way to do that. "It is not," Katou muttered. "But yeah, I guess I do. 'Almost boyfriend' is way too much effort to say, ya know? All them syllables and shit."
Maybe not the smoothest way to ask someone to be your boyfriend.
“Is so,” Jin murmured. He nibbled Katou’s ear again, then burst out laughing. “Yeah, that’s too many words. How about we just say boyfriend? You can tell whoever you want and everything.” It was a subtle way of asking who Jin could tell.
“Well, maybe I’ll tell my roommates,” Katou said, giving his shoulders a tiny shrug. He wouldn’t mind just keeping it between them, but that wasn’t exactly fair, was it? It wasn’t like he was embarrassed by Jin or anything. As far as boyfriends went, Jin was pretty great. “You can too if you wanna.”
“I don’t have roommates, but I have a couple of friends. I’ll keep it close to the vest.” Jin reached out to run his fingers through Katou’s hair, something he always enjoyed, and felt the tension ebb from his shoulders. “I didn’t realize how upset I was about the whole thing until just now. Do you know what caused your memories to go away?”
Katou involuntarily let out a small sigh of relief at hearing that Jin would only tell his friends. It wasn’t that Katou actually believed that Jin was going to go up to complete strangers talking about his super gay boyfriend Katou, but it was still a bit of a relief. “It’s uh… kind of a long story,” Katou said. “But short version is when I lost my arm my body didn’t really recover in the dreams, and my soul figured it’d say adios. Maybe it decided to pull my soul here along with it.”
“Well, your soul can stay where it is right now.” Jin sounded firm and upset. Mostly because he had been; he’d spent a week wondering what he’d do if Katou died. “I got attached to you, and I kind of want to keep you around. If that’s okay.”
“I don’t plan on going no where,” Katou said, smiling a little and reaching up to touch Jin’s face with his hand. “You’re stuck with me ‘til one of us gets sick of the other.” At least, Katou hoped so. Lina and Zee’s soul binding spell at least seemed like it was working well, but he still worried a little over what would happen when he finished dreaming. He felt like he was rooted firmly in place and was pretty sure it was just his pessimistic streak that was niggling at him, so there was no point in dwelling on it, let alone bringing it up.
Jin smiled. He was taller than Katou, and looking down at Katou always made him chuckle. Not then. Then he turned his head to kiss Katou’s palm before picking up the bat once more and returning to the batting cage. “And if you need anything beat up, I’ve got it for you. I think that was the part I hated most, feeling so useless when you were losing your memory.” Jin didn’t like being useless.
“My hero,” Katou said, batting his eyelashes at Jin, more teasing than mocking. “You know, if you gotta beat shit up for me I’d rather be right there beside you. The couple that fights together stays together and all that shit,” Katou said, grinning. In his dreams, he was the one who did all the protecting. Whenever someone tried to protect him instead, he’d always felt weird about it and most of the time it ended very badly.
“I try, you know.” Jin smiled and shook his head. “I’m as strong as I am in my dreams now, so you can plug them full of holes with your arm, and I’ll rip their fucking head off. LIterally.”
“Okay, that’s way cooler. Maybe you can do all the fighting,” Katou said, laughing a little. “Who’da thunk that someday I’d be able to say ‘my boyfriend can literally kick your head off’?” There wasn’t a single aspect of that sentence that Katou would have thought he’d ever say a few months ago, and it was a bit of a testimate to how damn weird this place was that ‘literally kick your head off’ was the least unexpected part of the phrase.
Jin felt kind of proud of himself. “And I can get an arrow in each eye socket and make sure the head impales itself on ‘em on the way down.” It was a weird talent, probably not that practical, but now it was his.
He tied his hair back before trying the next bat, actually getting it an admirable distance. Grinning, he realized that he wasn’t as much of a slouch at sports as he liked to think he was. Jin now was a far cry from the Jin he was in his dreams, a gangly loner more at home with books than other people.
Killing people was wrong and there was absolutely no reason Katou should want to see something like that so bad. But goddamn, would that ever be cool. “Alright, we gotta find ourselves a mannequin someplace and you gotta show me that.”
Katou gave an impressed whistle at the bat and shielded his eyes to watch the ball go (even if there really wasn’t any sun to shield his eyes from). “Look at that. The student has surpassed the master.”
“I’m sure we could arrange that.” Jin kind of wanted to practice more anyway. Sometimes he’d get an itch under his skin that made him want to go spar, made him want to find a speedback and knock it out of its housing.
Chuckling, Jin turned to Katou. “I feel like I should get at least a kiss for that shot.”
“I’ll see what I can do about getting my hands on one then,” Katou said. He really had no idea where one could get one legally, but he could always just change his face and take one from some clothing store someplace. It wasn’t like it was really stealing if they were never going to sell the damn thing anyway.
“You do, do you?” Katou asked, stepping closer to Jin. “You been getting a whole lotta kisses tonight.” Not that Katou minded. He lightly grabbed on to the front of Jin’s shirt and lifted his head to kiss the taller boy.
“I’m sure you can get one online.” Jin wasn’t entirely convinced there weren’t places online where one could buy anything. “You could probably just find a corpse or something online if you really, really wanted to. But I’d rather the mannequin anyway. Less to clean up.” As someone who dreamed of gore often, Jin wanted to steer clear of it.
“Want me to kiss you less, then? Or do you want me to kiss you somewhere else?” Jin couldn’t help but feel somewhat cheeky. He was high on adrenaline and snogging.
“Buying a corpse online ain’t really something I wanna do. I’m pretty sure that’d get me on some sort of watchlist or something,” he said. He hadn’t thought about the fact that he could maybe get a mannequin online though. Internet shopping was always something Katou kind of forgot about. He didn’t have a credit card and in the years up until moving in with Wendy, he hadn’t really had a reliable source of internet either.
“I wouldn’t wanna ruin your fun,” Katou smirked. “I guess you can kiss me whenever you wanna. Or any place you wanna too.” He reached up to place his hand on the back of Jin’s neck, and murmured “Nice shot” before he brought his lips to Jin’s.
Smirking, Jin shook his head. “No corpses, then. We’ll get a mannequin later. For now, though, I know where I want to kiss you and it requires privacy. Or semi-privacy, if you can be quiet.” Grinning wickedly, Jin tugged Katou by the hand toward the main admittance area. There had to be bathrooms, right?
