On any given normal day, Maes was high energy, ready to tackle the world and whatever else it might bring. The night before Elicia had been up and down all night coughing and running a fever. Being the ever worried, and overprotective father that he was, Maes had insisted that they go to the emergency room, and sure enough she'd had bronchitis. They'd only found that out after sitting in the ER for several hours, and he'd only gotten a few hours of sleep before having to go into work.
Of course, it wasn't as if he'd gone days without sleeping, but being out on the battlefield and being home was two completely different things. So once work was over with, instead of going straight home he went to the nearest coffee shop to grab a pick-me-up since he'd have to do some grocery shopping afterward since Gracia wasn't going to leave Elicia's side.
In some ways his wife was more protective over her than he was, which he honestly thought was impossible. Still dressed in his fatigues, Maes stepped inside the establishment, and moved to stand in line. He caught someone out of the corner of his eye, and he glanced over to a young woman. "I'm sorry, did I cut you off?" He asked, ready and more than happy to step back if that was the case.
Kyu had been up all night sketching for a couple of new clients in between sectioning off dime bags for a few old ones. She tended to sleep much less now that she was full-on love fairy, but she still was in the habit of having a coffee and a doughnut in the morning for breakfast.
The cute guy in fatigues bumped into her, but she shook her head. “Nope, it’s all you, handsome.” You could make the fairy date someone, but you couldn’t make her stop flirting.
It wasn't everyday that someone other than his wife called him handsome. Maes smiled at the compliment, and gave her a small inclination of his head. "Thank you, and it's good to know that I didn't cut you off. I'd hate to be rude." And he would hate to be rude to someone, Maes didn't really have a rude bone in his entire body.
He stuck his hand out to her, "Maes Hughes, pleasure to meet you." And of course he had to introduce himself. It was the right thing to do after bumping into someone of course.
“Kyu Wallace, nice to meet you too!” What a polite soldier. Then again, Kyu thought, Wash was too. Maybe it was a military thing. Secretly, Kyu was very pleased that she didn’t have the same last name as the girl in her dreams. Sugardust was a shitty last name.
Leaning down, she adjusted the strap on one of her high heels before standing upright and pushing bright pink hair out of her face.
Maes loved meeting new people. It opened up a new world of possibilities and one never knew what they would learn if they just talked and listened to other people. "So what do you do for work, Kyu Wallace?" He asked, curiously glancing over at her with a raised brow.
“I’m a tattoo artist.” She gestured to her well inked arms. “I go to school for art history too. I think it’s important to know a lot of styles.” Kyu wanted to be good at her job, especially since it would be with someone for a lifetime. “I’m about a week away from being done with my apprenticeship.”
That made sense to Maes as his eyes glanced down over her arms. He had never entertained the idea of getting a tattoo himself, but he could appreciate art. The smile never left his face as he gave a nod, "I think that would definitely be an important part of your job." He chuckled softly, shifting his weight to his other leg. "Well congratulations! I've never thought about getting one, although I was nearly forced to as a right of passage. I think all Marines go through that though." He had somehow managed to talk his buddies out of making him go to a parlour. Maes still wasn't sure how he'd done it either.
“My boyfriend is an ex-Marine and he’s managed to avoid it too.” She smiled as they inched forward in the queue, shaking her head. “I was unaware there were so many teddybears in the military, but it makes sense. Protective instincts are go!”
Chuckling, Maes nodded in agreement. Most of the military men he knew were good men, they might be a bit rough around the edges sometimes, but they genuinely cared about the people closest to them and they would do anything for civilians. Curiously Maes canted his head, "Might be a shot in the dark here, since I don't know every Marine, but who is your boyfriend?"
“He goes by Wash.” Kyu knew Wash’s civvie name, but didn’t know if he wanted her to tell it to a random guy in line at the coffee shop. “Super cute, about five inches taller than me, really pretty eyes.”
Maes's lips turned up at the corners into a wide smile. It was great to know that the two of them were finally dating. Maes worried about Wash, and hoped that things were going well with him. Perhaps he should contact him soon to see if he still wanted to come over for dinner one night. "I actually do know Wash." He nodded, still smiling brightly. "I'm glad that you two are together. He's a very good man who deserves happiness." Maes believed that everyone deserved to be happy in their lives, and being with someone that made you happy was the best thing in the world.
“Oh, god, did I hit on his old CO or something?” Kyu’s eyes went wide and she bit her lower lip. “I mean, you’re kind of obviously married?” Wedding ring, not looking at any of the girls in short skirts, smiling way too genuinely happy at the idea of Wash off the market - that was a man who was pleased with his relationship, and Kyu would bet it was a permanent thing.
Laughing, Maes waved a hand, "No, no. Nothing like that. We're friends, that's all." Maes thought of Wash that way, a friend, and he was happy to admit that. "I am very married." As if on cue, Maes pulled his wallet from his back pocket, and flipped it open. There were a lot of photos tucked into plastic coverings inside his wallet, but he only held out a recent family photo. "That's my wife Gracia, and my daughter Elicia."
“Oh, good.” Kyu grinned, immediately back to her cheeky self. Normally Kyu wasn’t a ‘look at the cute family’ type of girl, but it was contagious with Maes. “Oh my gosh, lookit the little little! She looks so much like her momma, but she’s got your eyes.” Kyu winked at him. “That’s a good thing.”
Maes grinned widely, proudly at the statement about his family. "Isn't she just the cutest thing?" He had a feeling that she would love Kyu, "And yes, I'm so thankful she looks just like her mother." He really was, it wasn't that Maes thought he was an ugly man, not by any stretch of the imagination, but his wife was stunning. "You and Wash will have to come over for dinner one night together to meet them." He'd already invited Wash to come over, though it would be wonderful if he brought his girlfriend with him.
“I’d love that, and I’m sure he would too. If you ever need a babysitter, give me a call, too.” She liked Maes right away, especially since he wasn’t giving her static over her tattoos. Sometimes parents were all OH NOES THINK OF THE CHILDREN about her tattoos, like they were essence of crime that would leak all over the babies by proxy.
"Good, we'll get it all set up then!" Maes was happiest with his family, however, he loved having company over. There was something nice about sharing food with people that you cared about, or even just spending time with them. "And I will definitely do that. I don't believe Gracia and I have been out on a real date in...well since before she had Elicia." That had to change quick. "Are you on the network?"
Kyu dug around in her purse and found the business cards she’d had printed up when she got her tattoo apprenticeship. “Here, you can call me and we can figure out a time that works for all of us. And I am on the network!” Usually saying foul-mouthed things, but hopefully Maes didn’t let Elicia read the network. If she could read.
"Well this works even better than using the network." Maes replied, taking the card before putting it in his wallet and pulling one of his own out. "And there's mine, that way you'll know who's calling." Maes always answered his phone even if he didn't know who was calling, but he knew not everyone was like him. Finally he stepped up to the counter, and placed his order. He stepped off to the side, waiting on his coffee to be made. Once it was finally up, he gave a nod in Kyu's direction, "It was nice meeting you, Kyu. I'll be giving you a call within a week or two so we can set something up for all of us." He smiled brightly over at her before turning to leave the coffee shop, feeling a little bit better and a lot less tired than he had when he'd first walked in.
