What: Caroline gives Hanna a tour
Rating/Warnings: Low/None

It had been way too long since Caroline had seen Hanna. Probably since she had graduated high school. Granted Hanna was two years younger and it was hard to keep touch with high school friends once college had take over her life, but still Caroline felt bad. She had always liked the younger blonde. Hanna reminded her of herself a little bit. Now that they were going to the same school again Caroline was determined to rekindle their friendship.
Arriving on campus with sparkling latte in hand she spotted Hanna almost immediately. “Hey!” she greeted with her usual bright smile on her face. She gave her a hug, handing her the latte when she pulled away. “I can’t believe you are going here too! You’re going to love it. What are you studying?”
Of all the people Hanna hadn’t expected to run into on the network who would also be at UC Irvine, it would be Caroline. She had always looked up to the older blonde when they’d been in high school and the fact she’d been nice to her had definitely helped. But hey, apparently that network was good for something (of course it was, social media, but it had still been a pleasant surprise) and so Hanna was happy.
The morning had been spent finishing up the five chapters of reading as well as picking out her outfit for the day. Less drama was good, but Hanna still would dress and package herself in the right way. Old habits and knowing that it was necessary to get ahead in the world. Then it was going to campus and waiting. But not for long because Caroline showed up soon after.
“Hey!” The hug was returned with a smile before she took the latte, “I know! Crazy right? Right now I’m just doing the lower division general education things while I figure that out.” Thank goodness for being able to go in undeclared and figuring it out later. Whoever thought eighteen year olds actually knew what they wanted to do with their lives was insane.
Caroline felt the same as Hanna when it came to picking a major. Eighteen was too young for someone to figure out what they wanted to do for the rest of their life. Or in Caroline’s case eternity, but she was sure she could and probably would change her career many times throughout the course of her existence. “I just changed my major so I totally get it. No need to rush into choosing the rest of your life.”
But enough about her. She wanted to hear more about Hanna. “So what have you been up to? How was high school without me? Boring?” she was teasing of course and began walking, leading Hanna around the campus pointing places out as they went. “That’s where the best coffee is. It doesn’t compare to Baxter’s though,” not that she drank much coffee anymore but she would always talk up her place of employment.
“That’s what I hear.” Because really. The amount of reports there were about people staying in college because they would change their majors since worst plan ever to go in declared really since people matured and changed their minds… It was more a time of discovery than anything.
“Oh yes. So completely bored, it was like the school died when you left. Nothing ever happened.” Which obviously was just Hanna being sarcastic. “But yeah, the last two years were fine.” Then there was the important information. Coffee. “I will probably be living there. I swear, I mainline caffeine and coffee.”
Fine? All kidding aside that was hardly the juicy details Caroline was expecting. “Come on Hann, you got to give me more than fine. Is Ms. Marlis still teaching history? She was like a hundred when I left. I swear she like lived through it all,” Caroline laughed at that. “And what about James Davis? Did he graduate yet?” That guy had been held back way too many times, and Caroline wanted the gossip. “And what about you? Any guys in your life? Please don’t say James,” she teased.
“Coffee is like the best form of caffeine if you ask me. My roommate is like addicted to Red Bull but just gross,” she wrinkled her nose at that. But this was coming from the girl that survived on blood. Not that Hanna knew that. It was a little too soon to drop the vampire bomb. “Over there is the book store. People call it The Hill for some reason. I’m not sure why. Not like I spend much time there.”
“Yeah, she definitely is still there. I’m pretty sure she sold her soul but didn’t get an aging picture for her troubles.” Just one of those throwing away a classical analogy while making it seem like a complete Hanna thing and no smarts involved. “He managed to graduate this year. I think they just wanted him gone though.”
Of course then Caroline gave her an opening and Hanna grinned, “How did you guess! But joking aside, no, no guys in my life at the moment.” That probably would change, just because Hanna tended to seek validation and affection. She didn’t know when or where or with whom, but that was beside the point.
“Red Bull is the devil’s piss, I don’t know why anyone would want to drink it. Coffee all the way for me.” There was just something gross about Red Bull so Hanna would gladly keep with her coffee drinks. And then the book store. “Okay. Random thing to call a book store.”
Caroline was the opposite of Hanna when it came to guys. They weren’t worth the trouble if you asked her. They would just leave anyway so what was the point. Of course she had tried the whole relationship thing once and that hadn’t turned out so well, just proving her point. “Well as long as it’s not James,” she teased. “But really nothing wrong with that. Who needs guys anyway?” That was Caroline’s philosophy at least.
“Right? It doesn’t even resemble a hill. Makes no sense,” she shrugged as they continued on their walk. “And that’s where the professor’s offices are. You know if you have questions or something,” she pointed one out in particular. “That’s my creative writing teacher’s office. Professor Frtiz or something like that. He’s a little creepy totally has a thing for my friend.”
Hanna would love if she could just...find that confidence in herself that she didn’t seek it out in others, but as it was, she wasn’t there yet. So throwing herself in to relationships only to be let down or broken hearted, well… that was her thing. At least for now. “Exactly.” She could agree even if she didn’t follow through. It wasn’t like she was being expected to follow through.
“Very weird.” Why call something ‘The Hill’ if it didn’t even look like one? Not that there was much she could do on that front. Besides, her interest was piqued when Caroline mentioned Professor Fitz and said he was creepy. “Wait, professor Fitz? As in my English professor who kept staring at me yesterday and kept me after? And who wants us to write an essay that’s due next week?” Because she had gotten more awkward from him than creepy even if the constant staring back at her had been more than slightly unnerving. “Is your friend a student of his or just… him creeping on younger girls anyway?”
“You too?” What was with this professor and staring. Like really. “Yeah, she’s his student. And you know what? He gave us way too much homework too. I have a ten thousand word story due Monday. Like I can think of a story that fast. Let alone that many words worth of one. Ugh!” Most likely she would just bull shit something and then compel herself a better grade. That was becoming her MO lately but oh well. She didn’t care about creative writing much anyway, she was just in the class because Anna had begged her. “So wait, why did he want to see you after class? Did he like hit on you?” Because why else would a teacher keep a student after class on the first day.
“Yep. So that’s his thing? Great.” And then the fact that she was his student? Even more creeper-tastic. “Wow. Like fine, I get sometimes you like who you like, but when it’s a teacher and a student, there are just way too many power issues at play no matter what they say.” Shook her head some, “Hopefully your friend stays away.” Like she didn’t know much about Mr. Fitz and he seemed nice enough, creeper actions and all. But even in all of her messed up relationships, Hanna had never gone the student-teacher route and it left her uncomfortable.
“Weird. I thought maybe it was some sort of...weed out the kids not cut out for college by pushing forth a bunch of homework and scaring them off.” Maybe she was wrong. But then Caroline was asking why she’d been kept back and honestly? Hanna had no idea. “He said he noticed that I hadn’t said anything in class and that he wanted me to succeed and do well and that it was worried teacher things. Now though, I’m not so sure.”
That was said complete with Hanna scrunching up her nose. It had been weird enough when Mr. Fitz kept her behind to talk, especially when it turned out he wasn’t doing it because he knew her mom. Now though? Whole new weird level going on there.
“Sounds like he’s taking an interest in more than your education.” What was it with this guy? Like really. Caroline didn’t trust him at all and she had only seen him twice. Although it felt like she knew him with all that Anna talked about him. Still if he was keeping Hanna behind for not speaking up in class on the first day? Yeah, it didn’t look good.
“Be careful with him,” not that Hanna needed a warning, she could take care of herself Caroline was sure of it. But Caroline was still one to always look out for her friends and Hanna definitely fell into that category.
“I thought maybe he was someone who knew my mom or something but he said he didn’t.” Because really, she hadn’t exactly been sure why else he would keep her back. It had just been weird. Actually the whole class had been weird what with the staring and seeming distracted half the time.
“Knowing that he has a thing for your friend? Definitely going to be careful.” Nothing good came from teachers who had things for their students. Because creepy and power plays. Very gross and creepy.
“Weird.” The mom thing would make sense and it was a better option than him trying to get to know Hanna for other reasons. Like the same reasons he was getting to know Anna. But still. “Keep me posted? And if you need someone to knock some sense into him... Well I’m stronger than I look.” Kicking a teacher’s ass probably wasn’t the best way to go about college, but hey, she always had compulsion to fall back on.
“Anyway, enough about creepy teachers,” Caroline said focussing back on the tour. “It’s time to show you the best places to eat!”
