Simon was freaking out a little. Or a lot. Okay, Simon was freaking out a lot. He was about to tell Clary about his feelings, because there really was no way around it now. His dream counterpart had feelings for Clary and considering she's probably already dreamt about finding out, there was no way to go on talking about their dreams without telling her in the waking world.
Clary had suggested they meet at The Institute, but Simon couldn't do that twice. He'd already told her about his feelings once there and wasn't about to do it there in real life too. So they had decided to meet at Baxter’s instead and now there he was, at the counter ordering their drinks and trying to stay calm and also glad that Izzy wasn’t working today, because he couldn’t tell Clary about his feelings with Izzy there.
Clary was worried about her best friend. Watching him from here she was sat in a booth as he grabbed their drinks from the counter, she couldn’t help but wonder what had got him so worked up. She tucked some hair behind her ear and settled herself in the booth a bit more as he made his way over. “Thanks,” she smiled and took the drink once it was stood on the table top. “So what’s up? Is it the Dreams? You sounded weird in that text,” she asked curiously, tilting her head.
Simon set the cups down on the table before sliding into his own seat. “Yeah, sort of.” He adjusted his glasses as he tried to get the courage to tell her, “Okay, so I don’t know if you ever noticed….I mean…” Picking up his drink, he took a sip, realizing that his throat was dry, “Clary, you know how in the dreams, I had feelings for you? Well, that’s not only in the dreams.” There, he’d said it. He’d said it and he couldn’t take it back. It was out in the open and there was nothing he could do but wait for Clary’s response.
Clary sat in stunned silence looking at Simon for a moment before she realised her mouth was agape. Shutting her mouth and giving a small shake of her head, she tried to compute what Simon had just confessed to her. “I...Simon, I don’t know what you want me to say,” she looked at him sympathetically. What could she do?
Seeing Clary’s expression, Simon realized that she thought he was expecting something now that he’d confessed his feelings for her, “I mean, I don’t expect anything. I know you’re with Jace.” He still didn’t quite understand what she saw in the guy. He seemed arrogant and self centered to Simon, but he apparently made Clary happy and that’s all that Simon wanted, “But I dreamt about telling you, so I figured you should know in real life too. Just so there are no secrets between us.”
“I don’t understand,” Clary shook her head, confused at his sudden admission. “Why tell me at all? I love Jace, Simon, you know that,” she sat forward, elbows on the table. “I love you too, but differently, you’re the closest thing I have to a brother,” she paused, looking up at him earnestly. She didn’t want to hurt him , he said he understood, but knowing it and hearing it could be two very different things. “And I wouldn’t change that for anything,” she stressed. “You’re the one person that I have always been able to rely on,” she smiled at him before something made her think of Izzy. “So you’ve..uh...had more Dreams. What’s happened in them?”
Simon had asked himself that same question; why tell Clary now? Why tell her when he knew nothing was going to come of it? The answer was simple, if he didn't tell her then he'd always be a little hung up on her and how was he supposed to move on then? "I figured that if you already knew about my feelings in the dreams, you wouldn't be too surprised by knowing about my feelings in real life." He watched her for another moment or two, "I love you too and that's why I had to tell you." He reached for his drink and took a sip as she spoke, "Well that's the other reason. In my last dream, we kissed. After the whole you and Jace being brother and sister thing was revealed." He still didn't know how they were so sure that they weren't really related in real life. Didn't these dreams usually mimic reality when it came to family?
Clary sighed and looked at him sympathetically. “I’m sorry Simon, it’s uh...it’s really complicated. In the Dreams and here, but it kind of works itself out,” she explained with a little shrug. “I umm...is there anyone else who’s...maybe caught your eye?”
“Clary, it’s fine. Really.” It wasn’t totally fine, but Simon knew that he’d needed to tell her if he ever wanted to move on. In response to her question, he shook his head, “No, not really.” That was also a lie, because Izzy had definitely caught his eye, but she seemed so out of his league that he didn’t even want to bring it up and end up crushed.
Clary sighed, wishing she could do something to salve his wound, but knowing that anything she did would most likely make things worse for him. “Look, why don’t you come to the Institute and hang out some more. I know Izzy would like to see you around more and we can all do with sticking together. And with you being further behind most of us then it might be an idea to be around people who can help give you some kind of...y’know, context,” she suggested hopefully. Not that she was trying to play matchmaker, but in her Dreams, Simon and Izzy made a really cute couple and they seemed to have hit it off here too.
Simon quirked a brow at Clary over the rim of his glasses, “Izzy wants me to hang out around the Institute more? Somehow I doubt that.” Izzy was not the sort of girl who usually wanted Simon around. Sure, she had been nice the times they’d been around each other, but he didn’t think she would go out of her way to request his presence, “I’ll come if you want me to though.” Of course it’d be awkward since Jace would likely be around since he lived there not to mention the fact that Simon simply didn’t understand what Clary saw in a guy like him.
“Well, ok, she hasn’t said exactly that, but you’re my best friend and she’s my Parabatai, I want you to get along. I think you’d really get along if you came over more,” Clary told him, stopping short of saying that they were a really cute couple in the Dreams. “I mean the library at the Institute has got to be a gold mine for a geek like you,” she teased him with a grin before taking a sip of her drink.
“Now you’re just being mean.” Simon smirked before finishing his drink and getting to his feet, “Promise me that if I come to the Institute, you won’t run off and dessert me for Jace; cause that’d just be mean.” He was teasing her, but he’d be lying if he said that he wasn’t a little worried that as soon as Jace entered the room, Clary would go off to hang out with him instead.
“I wouldn’t do that Simon,” Clary reassured him. “You’re still my best friend. No matter what.”
