Who: Johanna Mason and Peeta Mellark When: Mid August: Before Shattered Sight Plot Where: Archery Range What: Johanna shows off and tells Peeta about Katniss Rating/Warnings: Family friendly Status: Complete
Once she’d found a place that she could go to to practice using her axe, Johanna had had to go out and get some sort of case to transport the weapon that she’d received from her dreams cause she didn’t think it’d be a good idea to walk down the street with a pretty badass looking axe. She was pretty sure someone would call the police and she’d get arrested. And that was the last thing she wanted or needed.
After acquiring a case and and visiting the archery range a few times to check it out and make sure she’d be able to do what she wanted to there, Johanna had gotten the idea to ask Peeta if he wanted to come check out her axe throwing skills. She was by no means an expert, but her skills had gotten better since she’d found a place where she didn’t have to worry too much about her surroundings. So far Gale was the only one who had seen her practice with the axe and she’d only just started then so she was looking forward to showing off for Peeta and also to hang out with her friend.
Seeing how Johanna would handle her axes was something Peeta was really looking forward to. He had been in awe of her during the training before the Quarter Quell. So, when she called he readily jumped at the chance to meet her, which was perfect because he was trying to get back into working out in the first place. After grabbing his stuff from Alyssa’s place he made his way to the location that Johanna had sent to him.
He wandered in and looked around to try and find his friend. It took him a moment before he spotted her and he made his way over, “You’re going to have to let me try those things out later. I know I tried them a couple time in my dreams, so I’m curious as to if I remember anything.”
Johanna had decided to wait for Peeta in the main area of the range and stretch a little so that he wouldn’t have to go looking for her when he got there. Hear his voice, she knew she’d made the right choice, “I don’t know. I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself.” She smirked, clearly teasing him then gestured for him to follow her out into the outdoor area of the range where she had been able to practice throwing her axe. “Maybe we can start you with daggers or something small like that.”
“Ha de ha, I’m not a complete wimp. Although, I have to say that daggers would be pretty badass,” he pointed out to her with a laugh. He would pretty much take just about anything if it meant he could reclaim that part of his life from the dreams. He didn’t mind weapons, but he had been a little weary thanks to the dreams and he certainly didn’t have his own signature weapon to show up.
“Then we should totally go and see if we can buy you some daggers somewhere.” Johanna wasn’t really sure where one would go to buy a dagger. There were camping supply stores, but she didn’t think they had the sorts of daggers they were thinking of. Then again, if they found the right store, who was to say that they wouldn’t? Maybe she’d ask around on the Network. “Oh! Oh my god, I forgot to tell you. I saw Katniss the other day!” Johanna had been so surprised to see the other Victor a few days earlier that it had completely slipped her mind by the time she’d gotten home from work to tell Peeta or anyone else.
“Woah, wait, you saw her? Like she actually goes out and about? I have yet to actually see her in person. We’ve spoken once on the network and that was it,” Peeta barely paid Katniss any mind anymore. The girl had her own things going on if she ever needed him then she knew where he was. There were far more important things going on and he knew that anything that flourished between them would be purely platonic, so he didn’t need to rush any of that.
Johanna nodded, “I did. Thought I was seeing things at first.” She was still a little surprised that she had run into her, but she was glad that she had, “She was under the impression that we would all expect her to be the same Katniss as in the dreams. I told her that we don’t expect anything from her cause that was different.” As she spoke, she took her axe out of the leather case she’d bought for it, “She also said she doesn’t go out much cause she’s afraid of Snow showing up. I told her that if Snow ever showed up that there was a line of people waiting to kill him.” She smirked a little, “I think I scared the barista when I said that.”
“I don’t...well, I kind of expected her to be a little more confident than she seems to be here. It’s not like every single person here is exactly like the people in the dreams. Snow doesn’t exist and like you said, we would all happily kill him,” he didn’t even bat an eye at that idea, but did smirk at the idea of scaring the barista, “We’re the most serious people to talk about murder apparently. But I do think she needs to try and get out more. She talked to me and that was it - absolutely nothing else. I don’t even know if I should bother because we both seem to be doing fine without each other. But there’s also a part of me that is sad she’s not in my life because she’s a huge part of it in the dreams.”
“I kind of did too, but I guess we can’t assume anything here. After all, you know what they say happens when you assume.” Johanna smirked and swung her axe around a little to warm up, “I’m hoping that maybe she’ll be a little more receptive to us now. I was thinking that when we go to the lake, maybe we could invite her too.” Johanna was still looking for a lake they could go to.
“Maybe,” Peeta gave a bit of a shrug. He really wasn’t enthused by the idea of interacting with Katniss in person since he had gotten such a frosty reception on the internet. But, if she was there then at least he would have everyone else and possibly Alyssa to interact with if things did go like that. He watched Johanna appreciatively as she swung her axe around, “You look good with that in your hand. It’s almost like an extension of you now.”
“I mean, what other way to get her to be more open to us then inviting her, ya know?” Johanna could understand that Peeta might not be thrilled with the idea of Katniss being there for many reasons and she now wondered if it’d be weird for Katniss since Peeta was with someone else, but there really wasn’t any other way for any of them to get over things unless they were all together.
When he mentioned her ability with the axe, she glanced over at him and smirked, “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were flirting with me, Peeta Mellark.” She winked at him, unable to resist teasing him.
“I might be in love, but I’m not dead,” Peeta admitted with a laugh, “I can’t help but admire a pretty girl with an incredibly dangerous weapon in her hands.” He knew that his relationship with Alyssa was strong and she would just be greatly amused to hear him flirting with someone else and she would probably agree that Johanna looked good with the axe in her hand, “But back to Katniss, I guess you’re right in getting her to open up. Might as well act like one big happy family since we don’t get to be happy there.”
“Is that so? And what would your fiance think of you admire another pretty girl?” It was still so strange to Johanna that Peeta was engaged. He’d only been going out with the girl for a couple of months. How could he possibly know that he was ready to marry her? Regardless of the fact that they were supposedly going to have a long engagement it still boggled Johanna’s mind. She was happy that he was happy, but still didn’t get it. “And I just think it’d be good for her to see that all we want is to be her friends and that we’re all there for each other and she doesn’t have to endure the dreams alone.” She took a swing with her axe.
“She would probably give me a high five because she’ll think you’re pretty too,” Peeta commented breezily with a smirk on his face. Alyssa was definitely not like other girls when it came to things like that. She would probably be fine with him complimenting someone else and would sometimes even end up agreeing fully with the compliment, “And true. No one should have to go through it alone, especially if it makes them go a little crazy.” Peeta watched entranced as she swung the axe and he let his jaw drop slightly.
Johanna couldn’t help but laugh as she caught Peeta with his mouth open slightly, “You haven’t seen anything yet.” Turning to the target that had been set up for her, she took a moment to compose herself then threw the axe at the target where it hit just above the bullseye. “Now you can let your jaw drop.” She said, turning to smirk at Peeta.
“Jeeeeeesus,” Peeta drew out the word and then let out a low whistle. She certainly had all the skills and grace down from her dreams. It amazing him that something like that was able to transfer over between worlds. Especially seeing it with his own two eyes and he couldn’t help but give her a little clap, “Yeah, that’s pretty freaking impressive. I honestly wish I had something cool like axes, a bow, a trident, but I got nothin’.”
Johanna couldn’t help but bow as Peeta clapped for her. “That doesn’t mean that you can’t learn.” She said as she went to retrieve her axe. “I could probably teach you how to use an axe and there are plenty of archers on Valarnet,” She glanced around at their surroundings, “And we are in an archery range. They probably give lessons.” If Peeta was as strong in the waking world as he was in the dreams then she had no doubt that he could learn to use an axe the way she did.
“Well, then let’s get to teaching,” he teased Johanna with a smile as he stepped up and held his hand out for the handle of an axe. He might as well get a feel for the weight of it before he even attempted anything. It would take a bit of practice before he made it to the point of throwing like she did. But at least he had someone willing to help him learn.
