Maybe Professor Fitz was right, and Anna spent too much time on campus. She was there again, at the bookstore, perusing the books and filling up on supplies. She didn’t have a job at the moment, and she wasn’t due anywhere… so she had time to wander, energy to burn, and money to spend. Hence buying a new UCI Hoodie. What, that was school supplies, right? They sold it in the bookstore!
She turned a corner and nearly bumped into a familiar face. She’d seen Rose at the Bakery (Anna was a regular at Baxter Bakery), and knew that Rose and Caroline were friendly. A wide, friendly smile crossed Anna’s lips, and she gave a bright, “Hi!”
Rose had bought all her textbooks as soon as the list had gone up, and she’d already read her art history text. The university bookstore had all sorts of interesting books though, ones that she didn’t normally find in the usual chain store. It was going to be very hard to save money with this bookstore on campus and Much Ado About Books just around the corner from Baxter’s.
She was standing in the aisle reading the back of a psychology book that seemed interesting - The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat - when someone spoke to her, and she looked up. “Hello,” she said, offering a smile at the other girl. “Anna, right?” She was Caroline’s friend, the fellow art history major, and while she had never actually had a conversation with the girl she seemed like a friendly enough sort.
“That’s me,” Anna said, cheerfully. She was pretty much always bright and chipper, always seeing the bright side, always happy to meet with a friend. And though she and Rose weren’t particularly close yet, Anna knew that Caroline and Rose were friendly. And Anna would love to have more friends!
“And you’re Rose, right?” She beamed. “Ooh, that’s an interesting title! What’s the book about?” She took a step forward, motioning toward the book Rose was holding.
“That’s correct,” Rose answered her. “It’s a book of case histories of people with some strange neurological disorders. It seems as though it would be quite interesting.” Rose had always found the human mind incredibly interesting, and while she wasn’t majoring in psychology, she was considering having it as a minor. “Have you come here for school supplies?”
Anna smiled brightly, glad she’d remembered the girl’s name correctly. Sometimes she forgot names. And hey, remembering a name was the first step toward friendship, right? She took another step closer and leaned over to take a look at the book. “That sounds really interesting. I mean, I’ve always been interested in what makes people tick. Even though I spend so much of my time reading my own texts, it’s hard for me to get pleasure reading in over the semester.”
“It’s so fascinating, isn’t it?” Rose asked, smiling. “This is my first semester, so I’m hoping that I’ll be able to keep up with both.” She was aware that between school and work, she probably wouldn’t have time to get much pleasure reading done, though she was at least ahead in her readings for art history.
“Really?” Anna would have pegged Rose as being at least a year older than she was. But hey, everyone was different, right? “I’m going into my second year. Having a wonderful time of it, too. I spend far too much time in the Art Department, though this year I’m gonna be adding in some more English classes.”
“It’s true. I took a year off after high school.” It had been to plan her wedding and get married, but now that she thought about it, she wondered if Cal had ever intended for her to go to University after the two of them were wed. Maybe that had just been a hollow promise her mother and him and cooked up so that she’d agree to getting married before University.
“You can never have too many English classes. I believe Caroline mentioned that you were an art history major as well? How are you enjoying the program so far?”
“Yeah, I am.” Anna beamed a bit when Rose mentioned art history. “You are too? I’m loving it. It’s a really great department. This summer I was able to go to the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. It was amazing.” She beamed. “This year I’m hoping to take another class or two. I have to get all my general education requirements out of the way, you know?”
“They’re just lovely aren’t they?” Rose’s family had travelled quite a bit when she had been with them. In fact, it had been a trip to the Louvre when she was a little girl that had sparked her passion for art. “You’ll have to tell me all about it! Did you see Claude Lévêque’s Sous le plus grand chapiteau du monde?” she asked. The artist had installed some neon lights in Ieoh Min Pei’s pyramid, and it was supposed to be absolutely striking. Unfortunately, Rose didn’t foresee any trips to Paris in here near future, so seeing it in person was still far in the future.
“I would love to! And I can show you some of my pictures. They don’t do the real thing any justice, but I like looking at them to remember everything I saw.” Anna beamed over at her new friend. “No! I haven’t seen it. There was so much to see there, that I … I mean, I could have spent weeks in each museum, but I only had a couple of days in Paris total.” She tightened her grip on her hoodie. “Maybe we can meet for coffee sometime to chat about Art History and stuff?”
“I would love to see some of your pictures,” Rose said, smiling brightly. “There really is never enough time to see all the sights in Europe.” It didn’t seem to matter how long a vacation was, there was never enough time to go to all of the museums and old churches, to see the old architecture and art. The last time she had gone over to Paris had been with Cal and her mother, and it had been like pulling teeth dragging those two to the sights that she wanted to see.
“We should plan to meet up again sometime,” Anna said, brightly, too. “Caroline’s my best friend, but she’s not as much into Art History as I am. She wasn’t as interested in the art stuff on our trip. I’d love to share some of these with someone who cares about them.” Anna grinned sheepishly. “Maybe we can meet for coffee sometime? I’ll bring my albums.”
“It’s certainly nice to have friends who are interested in art,” Rose said. Most of her peers back home had some knowledge of art, but there weren’t many of them who had a passion for it. Making artsy friends was something Rose was enjoying quite a bit now that she lived in California. “Coffee would be wonderful. I’ll give you my phone number and we can arrange a get together!”
That was excellent news. She brightened considerably, and pulled out her cell phone so they could exchange numbers. “Sweet!” Anna was glad she’d made a new friend.
