Asami had decided to, right out of the blue, ring up Akane and suggest that they meet up for coffee and maybe sparring. She had a lot of excess energy to get out, but she didn’t know if Akane would be up for that - or if she could keep up with the martial artist. At worse, she supposed, she could hold up mats and keep Akane occupied. Even without her glove she could keep up with chi-blockers, after all. She also had a few surprises up her sleeve.
It wasn’t being attacked by a friend that was frustrating or upsetting. Well, okay, so it was upsetting, but more in that Akane was worried about Ashley because it clearly hadn’t been her but something from the dreams. No, what was frustrating was the fact that she now had to take it easy until her ribs healed. The good thing though was that she was out of the hospital and did need to at least keep moving to avoid fluid build up in her lungs. But it was light training and not for long.
So when she got the call from Asami, she was both excited to get out (and having to make sure no one worried and that she was safe) but also knew she’d have to go easy. No matter. It was still getting out, even if just for something to drink. They would see. With the coffee shop they met at as the agreed place, Akane arrived early and got her tea and went to sit and wait.
Asami had eventually managed to track down her stolen cobra, and currently had it stowed away in her garage out of paranoia. Instead she pulled up to the coffee shop on a sleek red Kawasaki Ninja, wearing loose black pants and a red, wraparound top. She pulled her helmet off and headed into the coffee shop. “Hey, sorry I’m late.”
Looking up from her tea, Akane smiled and shook her head.
“It’s fine. I just sat down.” It wasn’t like she had noticed. And as this was also serving as a getting fresh air and proving that the world wasn’t going to end her (mostly for her father as he had a tendency to overreact when she or her sisters were sick or injured and okay so it had been bad but she was doing better), waiting for Asami really wasn’t much of a bother.
She ordered her coffee first, then sat down across from Akane. “You look a little down, are you okay?”
So okay, maybe she wasn’t as okay as she wanted to appear, but it was still better than hovering and worry and things of that ilk, so Akane nodded. “Yeah. Was in the hospital but I’m better now. Thinking about things.” Smiled some “I’m fine.” And for the most part she was. However, she was also aware Ranma had put a threat on the network after she’d been attacked but it was fairly vague. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of that, but it wasn’t surprising either.
“Oh.” Well that put a damper on the sparring idea, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t chat and get to know one another. “I’m glad you’re okay. I guess it had to do with all that crazy a few weeks ago?”
That would have been the easy way. If it was something to do with when everyone had gone angry. Akane would have been better able to process it. It still would have been hard, but from what she had seen, it was mostly with people who were close to one another. It was a spell and given everything about Nerima, that wasn’t a difficult concept to understand.
“No. But similar. At least, it relates to the dreams I think. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time it seems.”
“Boy do I understand.” Asami laughed, lifting her drink to her lips. “Being in the wrong place, I mean. Though I think maybe it was the right time for me to be there.” Someone using her warehouses to do illegal weapons trade. She’d had to stop it.
Akane gave a small nod of understanding. After all, it was better that she be the one attacked as opposed to someone who wouldn’t be able to stand up against a..vampire? Based on when Ashley had bared her teeth, that was her guess. Akane at least had been able to defend herself for the most part. Who knew if a stranger would have broken through the haze of… Akane didn’t know. If Ashley would have come back in control. To her, it was better this way even if she now had to deal with an overreacting father and Ranma being confusing.
“I think sometimes is both.”
“But you’re okay, right? No lasting harm?” Asami had seen a fight go bad before. Not quite as bad as someone dying, but in some ways watching Korra try to recover had been nearly worse. At first, taking care of her, and then later losing contact with her as she’d spent three years away, recovering. Akane was out and about, so that was probably an improvement.
“No lasting harm. I just need to keep active without putting strain on them.” The aftercare was...frustrating, but it was better than being in the hospital. Six week recovery time was not ideal, but she was at least able to ease herself back into it. “Hovering family is more annoying.” And she did include Ranma and Genma in that, even if they could be annoying. Genma more so because he was the one who seemed more invested in pushing the engagement despite the current arrangement. And just how he was in the dreams.
“Hmm. That’s the hard part. You don’t want to injure yourself further, but laying around doing nothing can be maddening.” She wondered if racing around in a vehicle counted as active without a strain. “Hovering just means they care, though.”
“I need to make sure my lungs don’t fill I think they said?” Because it was her ribs, it was a bit complicated in the healing process. Having to have surgery because of said injury to ribs made it worse. “So it is confusing.” That sounded like the word she wanted. Maybe not exact but it was fitting all the same.
Akane did sigh in… not so much resignation, just as acknowledging yes, she knew it meant they cared. “I know…” She just felt bad about it as well. “My father is very….” Now to search for the word she needed. Protective was one word, but he over reacted. She knew why of course, after the death of her mother, he had always been like that, worried he’d lose her or her sisters. “Worrying?”
That would have to work for now.
"Then there are definitely some things that you can't do," Asami replied, nodding her head. She wondered if the person who'd said his fiance had been attacked was Akane's fiance, but it didn't feel right to ask. "He's over protective." Her smile was a little tight. Her father had been overprotective too. That was a wound that was still festering - waking dad in jail, dream dad dead.
“For now at least.” Akane wasn’t about to let an injury keep her down for long. Not when she felt that there was still something she needed to prove… against people not even here because they only existed within the dreams. At least as far as she knew. “Yes. He worries and over reacts.” Akane did notice the tight smile and tilted her head some in curiosity. “Are you okay?” Had her coffee made her feel sick?
“I’m fine. I’m just…” Asami twirled her hand. “My father was overprotective. Maybe not to that degree, but I’ve seen how someone can react badly to something happening.” Her mother’s death had changed him. She truly understood that now. “But I think part of me misses that security.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.” Because the way Asami spoke, it was as if her father were dead. Then again, Akane didn’t follow the news much. There was a lot that happened, and while it was important to know what was going on in the county, some things went over her head. The law things, really. “That makes sense. It can be annoying but it is still something you know and can rely on.” No matter how much her father worried or sent Ranma to make sure she was okay or freaked out at threats, Akane knew she’d be much more worried if he didn’t react that way.
“There’s a certain degree of protectiveness that’s nice.” She ducked her head. “I mean, I can take care of myself but there’s this annoying part of me that likes to feel safe in someone’s arms. You know? I can’t explain it, and it’s really stupid. But it’s nice.”
A small nod of understanding was given, that a certain degree was nice. “I think I do.” Because Akane was so desperate to prove herself. She didn’t know why, it was just there. And yet, she would miss Ranma if he weren’t there and being annoying and overprotective in his...very brash and insulting way. Not that she would ever tell him that. God no. And with her father, well, she knew where it came from. Even if it was all she had known because her mother had died when she was young, she still knew the root cause.
“So. Since my original idea is out, what do you say to a nice exciting ride. Down to the beach or somewhere, I’m not too picky.” She gestured out to her motorcycle.
And that was that for the serious talk. Which was good. So Akane just gave a small nod and smile. “Un. That sounds fun.”
“Just hold on tight,” Asami warned her. “I barely pay attention to speed limits.”
