Who: Peggy Carter and Sharon Carter with Viv!
When: Early August
Where: Sharon and Veronica’s place
What: A visit
Rating/Warnings: Low/none (newborn stuff)
Status: Complete
Sharon was excited for Peggy to come over. First, because she missed her cousin, and second because it would be nice to talk to someone who was older than a few days. Someone who actually spoke English. Someone who smiled.
It wasn’t that Sharon didn’t love her baby. She was just exhausted and experiencing some “Baby Blues”... she realized this was what was happening, but it was impossible to stop. The lack of sleep wasn’t helping, either.
So tonight, Veronica and Backup were at Logan’s, and Sharon’s mother and father had gone out to dinner. Sharon and Viv had the place to themselves, and were hanging around on the sofa watching Neflix, waiting for Peggy to arrive.
It was finally time for her to come over and spend some proper time with her cousin and the new arrival. She had seen Viv when she was first born, but things had gotten a little busier at work and she was happy to just come over and eventually see her aunt and uncle as well. Her own parents were planning to come for a visit at the end of month, which was incredibly exciting. Nothing like a new arrival to bring a family together.
She parked her car at the curb and made her way to the front door, raising her hand, and knocked on the door. She shifted on her feet as she waited for Sharon to answer. Her baby skills were next to nothing, so she was a little nervous about what could possibly happen.
Sharon climbed up from the sofa and pulled the front door open at the sound of the knock. She broke into a bright smile when she saw Peggy standing there. “Hi!” She said, excitedly, then reached forward to hug Peggy. “I’ve missed you!” She was going a little stir crazy staying home all day with the baby. “How’s the outside world?”
“Oh Sharon,” she couldn’t help but laugh as she returned the hug and smiled, “The outside world misses you. My parents are coming at the end of the month, so be excited about that. I’m sure my mother will let you have some time in the outside world. How is the newest member of the family?” She stepped inside once they broke the hug and closed the door behind her.
“I’ve missed the outside world!” Sharon gave a little laugh and moved into the apartment, leading her cousin in. “I’ll be so excited to see them! I hope they’ve talked to my mom and dad. I have no idea when they’re leaving.” She went back to the laundry she’d been folding in front of the television. Viv was in a vibrating baby chair bed thingy by the television, asleep. Sharon picked up a blanket to fold it. “She’s sleeping. Come on over and pick her up.”
“I’m sure they’ve had very long discussions. And I’m very glad I’m not on either end because our mums can chat for hours on end,” Peggy pointed out with a laugh as she walked over to where Viv was and let out a soft sigh, “She is so cute, Shar. I still feel like I could break her and I’ve handled a lot of fragile things in my life.” Peggy was cautious as she leaned down to pick Viv up and settled into the couch.
“Well, that’s absolutely true.” Sharon beamed. It was good that their parents were so close--it meant that Sharon and Peggy had reason to be close. She liked that the whole family got on so well. She continued folding while Peggy picked up the baby. “She’s a bit more resilient than you might imagine. I hear she’ll get to be a bit more fun when she starts smiling and whatnot, but she’s still getting used to the world now.”
“She’ll be a lot more fun when she’s out of your house and can take care of herself,” Peggy quickly retorted with a smirk on her face and chuckled, “But yes, smiling and not wearing diapers will make her a lot more fun. For now she’s just adorable and then I give her back to you when she starts to make noise.”
Sharon laughed. “Let’s not rush things! She’s still so small. Her moving out seems a lifetime away.” And, in a way, it was. She gave the towel she’d been folding a hug against her chest. “That’s what everyone does. I’m getting used to it. It’s going to be weird when other people can take care of her noises and I won’t be needed anymore.”
“Now it’s my turn to tell you not to rush things. You’re always going to be needed and it’ll be a long time coming before other people pick up on her,” she wasn’t going to mention that it would probably be just the three parents that truly understood Viv in the future. The rest of them would gladly default the child to her parents, “I’ll always give her back to you, promise.”
“Good. Because I… I know it’s only been a few weeks, but I already don’t know what I would do without her.” Sharon admitted. She was head over heels in love with the baby--the one that didn’t do anything besides eat, shit and sleep. The one that couldn’t do anything for itself. The little girl who depended on Sharon for literally everything from food to clothing to bathing to sleep.
“Eventually you’ll be quite pleased when she starts doing things for herself,” Peggy pointed out with a laugh, “And then you’ll have other things you can do with her to enjoy the time together. You’re a good mum.” It was true. Peggy had quite enjoyed seeing Sharon step into this role and it seemed to suit her quite well.
“Yeah, probably,” Sharon admitted with a smile and a soft sigh. “It feels like it’s just going to get better and better. Every passing day, you know?” She reached over and ran her fingertip along the baby’s cheek. “Thank you.” She smiled shyly.
“You’re the cutest. Look at how much you’re glowing, love. This is brilliant for you,” Peggy admitted with a smile and settled back into the couch, “Alright, I’m feeling fairly confident in this holding business. Let’s get to relaxing before she starts crying. This is time for you to do whatever you haven’t had time to do lately.”
“Oh, gosh. I haven’t had time to do anything lately,” Sharon laughed, but then she grabbed a towel from the linen closet. “Shower. That’s my number one. You guys are okay for about ten minutes?” But she was already heading to the bathroom, towel in hand.
“We certainly are. Go, get yourself clean,” Peggy smiled at her cousin’s enthusiasm for a shower. She was more than willing to try and make sure that Viv was happy while her mom was in the shower. It might not be time for her to have a child yet, but she was more than happy to try her hand with Viv and if it helped Sharon out, then perfect. Peggy let out a soft sigh as she leaned back into the couch and got comfortable; gently rocking the child in her arms.
