They wouldn't have kept her had her blood pressure not been high, and she was two weeks late on top of all of that. Splendid's doctor was talking about inducing labor soon if she didn't begin to dilate and well, she was honestly ready to get this show on the road. Another contraction made her stomach harden, her hand automatically going to the swell of her belly and she breathed out slowly.
"Four or five, before I can have an epidural. Can you believe that?" She muttered irritably to Capable with a snort and shake of her head.
Capable was glad she was able to be here with her friend, she felt closer to Splendid since the dreams even if she hadn’t experienced them yet. And she didn’t want Splendid to go through this alone. She held her hand through the contractions and helped her breathe.
“You’re doing wonderfully” she said, “I’m sure the doctors only want the best for you”
Splendid shook her head, "Right now? I'm doubtful of that." She laughed softly, before a line appeared between her brows at how uncomfortable she felt. Splendid honestly appreciated the fact that Capable was there with her, she would've been lost without anyone there, but since moving to Orange County she'd found people that she could consider to be her friends.
"I think I'm ready for another walk." They'd kept reminding her to get up and walk, that it should help get her labor moving although she wasn't sure it was going to work.
Capable nodded, having just been about to suggest it. Even if it didn’t work at least Splendid would have a focus and it would hopefully help with the pain. Capable couldn’t imagine how it felt but hoped that being there to support her friend was helping.
“Okay, careful now” she said, helping her to stand and walk around the room they were in, “You really are doing so well Splendid”
Breathing in deeply through her nose, Splendid held onto Capable as she helped her up. One hand went to the small of her back, "Thank you." She shuffled slowly around the room, "I just want it to be over with, you know?" She glanced over at Capable, "But I swear, if I hadn't had those dreams I would still be waiting."
Capable nodded, “I know. It will be soon I’m sure” she said, after all she was doing everything correctly from what Capable had seen and heard. “Oh? You’ve had dreams?” there was a hopeful tone in her voice which she could not disguise.
Taking in a deep breath, Splendid nodded. "Mhm." There were many nights that Splendid couldn't remember her dreams, and they seemed to fade as the day wore on, but these? They weren't fading. "They were strange." She spoke softly with a shake of her head, "The world had been -- destroyed, for lack of a better word. We, my family and I, were headed to this place called The Citadel." A deep feeling of dread settled into the pit of her stomach as she thought about the man that had just appeared in her dreams. "Then there was a man named Joe."
Oh no, that meant she’d soon dream about becoming a wife. Capable knew right then if she could spare her friend the dreams she would but sadly she couldn’t. “I dream of the same world” Capable told her, stroking Splendid’s back for her, “I know Joe from the dreams too, so if you need to talk anytime I’m here” she said softly.
Splendid's brows drew together, a line of confusion appearing between them. "What?" She asked, her voice soft. She stared at Capable for a few moments, and then let out a light laugh. "I'm sorry. It seems like such an awful place. I wouldn't want anyone to dream of that place." Splendid rubbed a hand over her belly, and let out a long breath.
“If I could stop you dreaming about it I would” Capable told her, still stroking her back, “But let’s focus on you and the baby right now. Dream talk won’t help you relax I’m sure” she said, not wanting to stress Splendid out as she went about the difficult task of labour.
"As I would you." Splendid shook her head as she breathed out slowly. If she thought about it hard enough, she could feel the hot scorching sun against her skin, she could smell the stench that surrounded the citadel. It was enough to make her feel ill, although that could've also been the pain she was in. "No, you're right. Also thinking about how I haven't really done anything to his nursery isn't going to help either. He does have a crib, but I didn't paint or do anything else."
“I can help you” Capable promised her, “You just tell me what to do and I will do it” She wanted to help out as much as she could to make things easier for Splendid. She was a good friend in the dreams, a sister, and Capable hoped that here they could be close too.
Splendid shook her head, "I don't know." Her brows furrowed slightly, she didn't want to talk about the fact that she still wasn't sure what she was going to do. "I don't think the walls need to be painted, but some decorations in his room would be nice. I need to buy a few more things. I just -- I don't know what I was thinking." She shook her head, lips drawn into a thin line as she kept walking around the room.
“It’s okay” Capable soothed, “You don’t need to think about it now. We can sort everything out later” she assured her, moving slowly around with her, “Don’t worry about anything”
Splendid placed her hand on Capable's arm. "Thank you, for everything." She really meant that, she didn't know what she'd do, or where she'd be now without the people that she'd met here in Orange County. The door swung open, and a nurse stepped in, asking Splendid to get back in the bed so they could check her over. She tried to listen to Capable's words, and not worry about anything, but really that was easier said than done.
