So, Anna woke up on Sunday morning and felt like a heinous bitch. She’d done so many horrible things over the past week… she’d shoved Caroline, she’d been mean to Lexi, she’d snapped at Elsa, and she’d… she’d punched Professor Ezra Fitz in the nose. (Her knuckles still smarted a bit when she thought about it.) Now she was dealing with a week’s worth of guilt.
She’d done her best to make amends with Caroline, apologized to Lexi, and sent a couple of text messages to Elsa with the plan to meet up with her later, and then picked up a couple of coffees and headed to UCI to make amends with … her would-be professor.
So on Monday morning she knocked on his office door, two coffees in hand. Iced, because it was hot, and big. Hers had caramel and whipped cream, and looked absolutely amazing. His had less frills and whistles.
Everything was distracting lately. If it wasn’t the dreams it was one strange thing or another happening in Orange County. Most recently it was whatever had happened to make everyone cross with each other, and the dreams. However his disagreement with Anna was what was bothering him the most. Perhaps it was for the best though. Now he wouldn’t have to see her anymore. Have to deal with whatever was happening between them. If anything even was.
“Come in,” he called to whoever had knocked on his door. He was in the process of grading papers this time. Not working on his novel for once. He was too distracted for that lately. When he looked up he saw Anna at the door. “Oh, Miss Arendelle,” he greeted his tone neutral.
“How can I help you?” he asked once again motioning for her to have a seat. There were still marks under Ezra’s eyes thanks to Anna’s fist. It was also clear he wasn’t entirely sure how to act around her now. He decided treating her like he would any other student was the best course of action.
Anna saw the marks under his eyes and felt another sharp pang of guilt over what she’d done. She had no idea what came over her, but whatever it was made her do that. Anna wasn’t a violent girl by any stretch of the imagination. Except in her Dreams. And now… here. Apparently.
She forced a smile, tentative and nervous, and then stepped into his office. “I wanted to… to come and apologize for what--for what happened.” She offered up the iced coffee that she’d purchased for him, raising her eyebrows.
“I’ll understand if you want me to drop out of your class and never see you again. I mean, I might want that if someone… just… punched me in the face, but… well, I guess I’m hoping that you won’t?” There. She laid it all out there. An apology, an offer to leave him alone forever, and a sacrifice of cold, coffee goodness.
He wasn’t expecting that. An apology and a coffee. Though he supposed he should have been. He had felt his own fair share of guilt once the week had passed. It was clear that something had affected the citizens of Orange County, yet again. That must have been the reason he had been so rude to Anna, and that she had hit him. However, he was willing to just let it all go. Move on and continue things on a professional level. Student, teacher. Like it should be. This wasn’t Rosewood. She wasn’t Aria. This was real life, not his dreams.
He accepted the coffee, giving her a polite smile. “You are more than welcome to take the class. I have no hard feelings,” he assured her. He even took a sip of the coffee to show everything was all right between them.
Wow. That was sweet. He coughed to try and cover the look of shock on his face. “I’m sorry,” he added, not referring to his reaction to the coffee. “For the things I said.”
Orange County and its fuckery. Anna had lived through snow in June, dealing with a frozen heart (twice) and all sorts of other crazy things. This was actually low on the list. But somehow she felt more guilty about this than she felt about any of the others.
She couldn’t help feeling hopeful when he said she could still take the class. Her heart started to beat a little faster with her excitement. (That was Anna for you.) Then she perked up considerably when he sipped the coffee.
“I am, too. For the things I said. And… you’re totally forgiven, too, I mean… it was all true stuff, anyway.” The smile only faded a little when she said it.
Ezra set the coffee to the side, he’d drink it later. Or throw it out. Probably throw it out. It was too sweet for him. He didn’t want to offend Anna though.
Well he was forgiven, that was a good sign. However, Anna seemed to think what he said was true. Which, he supposed it was but there was nothing wrong with any of it. “Hey, you could never smile too much,” he assured her. “And there is nothing wrong with how much time you spend here. Good for your studies. I also know that you are perfectly capable of forming sentences. You were just angry. I get it. If anything I think you’ll be too advanced for my class.”
If his intention was to get Anna blushing furiously, he reached his goal in spades. She felt her heart thundering in her chest, a warmth spreading through her neck and cheeks as she turned her eyes to the drink in her hands. “Thank you.” She was trying not to go a little crazy, but he was so nice. And kind. And handsome. And … everything.
Man, she was starting to like him. A lot. More than she should. But she didn’t want to think about that now.
“Then I’ll definitely still take it. I’m really looking forward to it.” She said, softly. Finally, she lifted her eyes to look at him again through her long lashes.
Did she really have to look at him like that? He couldn’t deal with this right now. He had already made up his mind that whatever friendship it was they had was over. He needed to keep it strictly student/teacher. But when she looked at him like that it made things difficult.
“I look forward to seeing you there,” Ezra replied clearing his throat. “I’ll see you in class,” he added picking his red pen back up and glancing down at his stack of papers. Time to get back to work.
“I’ll see you in class.” Anna said and gave him a warm smile. She climbed from the chair and headed out of his office, a little bounce in her step.
