Tsuzuki had found that it was especially difficult to have a bad day when your day consisted of being surrounded by flowers and other plants all day, and it was even harder to have a bad day when your favourite coworker had promised you apple turnovers. Tsuzuki had been pruning the rose bushes when he noticed Hisoka coming in, and promptly stopped what he was doing to greet the boy. “Good morning, Hisoka!”
Hisoka was never the type of person who had many friends. He was always polite and cordial, but still tended to distance himself from others. Tsuzuki was the rare exception in his life. The older man had seemingly wormed his way through most of the boys walls and Hisoka had become fond of him, even if he didn’t always show it.
"Good morning," he replied, setting a box of treats on the table. He himself didn’t care for sweet food but that didn’t stop his housekeeper from making them. The end result was tsuzuki reaping the benefits of her baking. "Try and limit yourself two before lunch okay?" he added a small smile forming on his lips.
“Hisoka, you’re too cruel,” Tsuzuki whined, but he was smiling pretty widely as he dove for the box and helped himself to one of them. “I don’t know how you can’t like sweets when you have people making you delicious snacks like this.” Not that Tsuzuki was complaining, since all it meant was that there was more for him. He took a large mouthful, and then asked Hisoka “So, how are you this morning?”
Hisoka rolled his eyes slightly as Tsuzuki whined a bit. Honestly there were times it was hard to tell who was really the adult and who was the teenager. "I don't know why they keep insisting on making them when they know I don't like him. But that's why I have you I suppose." He countered.
Picking up on one of the watering cans. The teen started to care for some of the nearby flowers. He felt peaceful at the greenhouse, surrounded by nature and the sweet fragrances.
"I'm doing alright. Schools finally out so you'll see me around a lot more now." He answered, looking up at the older man. "How about yourself? How's your sister doing?"
Tsuzuki positively beamed at getting all of Hisoka’s treats. He would be more than willing to take the task of eating all of the sweets that Hisoka didn’t want. It was one of the many reasons he liked Hisoka so much.
“Ruka’s doing well,” Tsuzuki said. “Her boyfriend’s moving in in July, which is pretty exciting.” He was really, genuinely happy for her, but it still made him feel a little lonely that it wasn’t just him and Ruka anymore. But she had put her life on hold for so long while he was in the hospital that he was happy that she was finally getting a chance to live it. “And my flower garden at home is really starting to come along. I can’t wait for you to be here more during the summer though. It will make work more pleasant.”
"That's quite a serious step," the boy mused thoughtfully. He knew how close Tsuzuki was to his sister. It was rather sweet especially since mostly one saw siblings fighting more often than not. "Has he passed the brother test yet?"
Hisoka smiled a little at the older man's statement. Here he wasn't part of the background furniture. "I should come see your home garden sometime." He replied. "With mother and father gone I really don't have all that much to do."
"He passes with flying colours," Tsuzuki responded, and it wasn't just because he had brought homemade cookies the first time he has met Tsuzuki. "I don't think I've ever seen Ruka happier than when she's with him.”
“I would love for you to come see my garden,” Tsuzuki said. It wasn’t often that he got to show it off, but he really did like having people see it. “Your parents are still gone?” he asked, frowning. It was pretty easy to forget that Hisoka was just a kid, because he acted like such an adult sometimes, but the fact of the matter was that he was only a teenager. It was horrible how often his parents left him alone. He might have had hired help, but it wasn’t the same.
"Just make sure you don't scare the poor man off." He teased his friend lightly. He didn't think that would happen in reality. If this man cared for Ruka, he'd know that Tsuzuki was part of the package. And the oaf was impossible not to like.
"They extended their trip in Italy and then I think after that they're going to be in...Monaco?" The last part of the sentence sounded more like a question because Hisoka honestly couldn't remember. His parents were always off somewhere and as the years went by the boy stopped caring where it was they were. He was used to it. "They'll be back at some point this summer."
“I’ll try not to,” Tsuzuki said, giving Hisoka a wink. “I think he’d be pretty hard to scare off even if I wanted to though.”
It was sad that Hisoka didn’t seem completely sure where his parents were going, and the corners of his lips turned down a little bit. It must be lonely. Tsuzuki was a little lonely now that he and Ruka didn’t live together anymore, but he was a grown man and Ruka was still always around whenever he needed her. It didn’t take long for his frown to turn into cheerful smile though. “I know! Why don’t you stay with me until your parents come home? It’s not a very big house, but it’s cozy!”
Hisoka's eyes widened slightly in surprise at Tsuzuki's suggestion. It was definitely the last thing he expected to hear his friend say.
"Tsuzuki, you don't have to offer that." He said, shaking his head slightly. It was sweet of the man to suggest it though. "I really am used to having the house to myself. I wouldn't want to impose on your home. You don't need a kid crashing on your couch."
“You wouldn’t be imposing at all!” Tsuzuki said. “It would be fun. And I can get pretty lonely myself, living on my own. It would be nice to have some company.” He was sure that Hisoka would be offended if Tsuzuki talked about how not right it was to have a kid staying with just the hired help, and it probably wouldn’t help convince Hisoka, so he’d keep that to himself. “I can make you dinner, and show you the garden.”
Hisoka bit his lip in uncertainty as he thought about his friends offer. He did have to admit that even though he was used to his parents being gone, he still tended to get lonely at times. Part of him was slightly worried about the two of them staying together in closed quarters together. They were polar opposites and he had a feeling it would be like The Odd Couple from hell. But still...
"I suppose it wouldn't hurt to sleep on your sofa for a night or two." He conceded after a moment. "It will give me something different to do if you're sure you wouldn't mind."
It almost surprised Tsuzuki that Hisoka agreed, though even if Hisoka hadn’t, Tsuzuki probably would have kept pestering him about it. But he grinned and clapped his hands. He was already thinking up what to make for dinner. Maybe he could make Hisoka his famous spaghetti with gorgonzola cream sauce. “Great! When I get off work I’ll get everything all set up and you can come over! Maybe you can bring some more turnovers?” He didn’t know if Hisoka had any turnovers (or cookies. Or cake. Or pie. Tsuzuki wasn’t picky) left in his house, but there was no harm in trying.
Hisoka rolled his eyes at the older man's suggestion and shook his head slightly. He wondered if his stomach was the only thing Tsuzuki thought with. He'd never met anyone who could eat as much as he did.
"I'm sure Amelia could make up that pie you seem to enjoy so much as a form of payment for letting me stay with you." he replied. All he would have to do is ask his housekeeper and she'd be at the kitchen quick as a flash even if he told her it could wait. "I could also cook while I stay there if you'd like?"
"I can't say no to that pie," Tsuzuki said, though the compliment probably lost some weight given that he couldn't really say no to any pie. "Cooking together could be a lot of fun! Ruka and I used to cook together all the time!" Ruka had never really let Tsuzuki do more than chop vegetables or other basic prep, but it had still been pretty fun.
Tsuzuki gave a glance to the hibiscus tree as they passed it. He should probably be using his time to trim it, but now that Hisoka was here, he'd much rather talk with the boy. Besides, watching Hisoka spray the plants was almost like working. "Is there anything I should pick up after work?" he asked instead. "Or anything I should know? You don't snore, do you?"
“Not that I know of.” He said in regards to the older mans question. He never really went to sleepovers or even had many people to his house. Though he was sure that if he did, Amelia would probably have teased him about it. “I wake up pretty early on most days though. You’re not a light sleeper are you?”
Coming up to the roses, Hisoka gave a small smile. Tsuzuki was right. They were looking beautiful. His friend had an amazing talent when it came to plantlife.
– “I can sleep through an earthquake,” Tsuzuki said, a touch of pride to his voice. Not that he had ever actually slept through an earthquake, but Ruka had often teased him with that when he was growing up.
The roses and the hydrangeas really were Tsuzuki’s two favourite flowers. Well, them and tulips, but tulips didn’t require too much care. As he passed the flowers, Tsuzuki double checked them to make sure that he hadn’t missed anything. “This really will be great, Hisoka. You’re going to love staying with me!” Tsuzuki would absolutely make sure they had a good time.
“You seem rather excited about this.” Hisoka commented, looking up from the roses to his friend. “You were the one who loved sleepovers when you were a kid weren’t you?”
It was sweet though watching Tsuzuki plan everything out while he stayed with him. It also helped Hisoka feel better about the whole idea. He was so used to being a burden to his parents that he became constantly worried that it was the same way with his friends. Even though Tsuzuki never once indicated as such. “Why don’t I go and get things around and I can meet you at your apartment later?”
“I never really had sleepovers as a kid,” Tsuzuki said. While he had planned his fair share of sleepovers, he had never really made friends as a child. Instead, he had been bullied throughout most of his school life. The look of sadness that crossed his face was gone almost as quickly as it came. Ruka had usually gone through with his sleepover plans, and that had been fun. “But I always liked the idea of sleepovers!”
“That sounds like a great idea! I’ll write down some directions for you later today,” Tsuzuki said, trying very hard to pretend like he hadn’t just seen his boss glaring at him from across the room.
“I never had them either.” He admitted, setting the spray bottle down. He was never one who really made friends easily. He generally preferred to be alone. He knew he came across snobbish, though he didn’t really mean to. “So it will be a new experience for the both of us.”
Noticing the man across the room looking unhappy, Hisoka grabbed his bag, slinging it over his shoulder. “I’ll see you a bit later Tsuzuki. Time for you to do some actual work” He said, teasing the man slightly before turning towards the door.
“Well then, we’ll just have to make sure to have a lot of fun!” Tsuzuki didn’t think it would be hard. Perhaps Hisoka was a little serious for his age, but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t watch movies or goof around all night.
“No, don’t leave me!” Tsuzuki whined shooting Hisoka a wounded puppy dog look as the boy turned to leave. Maybe it was time he did start working for his paycheque again though.
"You'll be fine Tsuzuki," Hisoka commented somewhat playfully, turning back to face the older man. The look he was being given was both pitiful and somewhat adorable at the same time. Not that he'd tell his friend that. "I'll be back before you know it to liberate you from your adulthood. I'll even help you close up,"
