Ed hadn’t shown up to two of his biweekly therapy sessions now and he wasn’t planning on returning, nor had he answered phone calls or text messages sent his way. He didn’t care what his phone had to say, it was of little interest to him. It was the same with just about anyone else who approached him. He was currently sitting outside his home, automail shining in the sun in perfect view as if to scare anyone who might think about approaching away.
He didn’t do anything Riza said, he ignored Al half the time and the other half was just plain cruel to him and yet Ed showed no remorse for these actions. At one point he’d very nearly pushed Riza down the stairs because she stood between him and the thing he’d wanted. Still none of these things even caused Ed to blink twice at his actions. He sat on the stoop just outside their home with his nose in a Chemistry book.
Sarah was worried about Ed, he'd skipped appointments and was avoiding her calls and messages. So before getting his aunt involved she'd decided to drop by and see if she could speak to him. Maybe the dreams had been particularly rough lately.
Walking up to the house she spotted him outside, "Hey" she called out, "How you doing?"
Ed didn’t look up at first, he really didn’t want to be bothered. Why did everyone do that? If he was wearing headphones he was interrupted, if there was a book in his hand it obviously meant oh please talk. An eye void of emotion shifted upward toward the familiar voice.
“You don’t need to pretend to care you know I’m off the clock.” Ed stated flatly, not a trace of warmth in his voice.
“Well it’s a good job I’m not pretending then isn’t it?” Sarah replied, coming closer, “What’s wrong Ed? Has something happened? You’ve missed our sessions, I’m trying not to take it personally” she added with a smile as she went to sit near him.
Ed might have rolled his eyes if he felt anything but a dull cold rage. “Don’t come near me.” He snapped and stood, golden eyes narrowing at her dangerously. “Didn’t you hear me or are you as bad at that as you are at fixing me?” He stood moving away as she came near. “Everything will get better will it? Time, it takes time. Well I’m still waiting, but I’m tired of it. Waiting is for suckers who can’t do what I can.”
“Okay” Sarah said moving back, holding out a calming hand, “Just calm down Edward. I know it’s hard but it really will be better in time. You can’t do anything rash, there are people here who care about you. And we’re doing whatever we can to help you”
Ed was pacing by now, no real rational thought was seeping through. "No. No you're wrong. And so is psychology, it's an unverifiable shit field of speculation and soft science. " He seethed. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the movement of her hand raising, and he reacted. Instantly and instinctively his hands came together to break down the brick walled stoop attached to his home beside her using alchemy. It sent a rumble through the ground and neighboring houses foundations. A harsh blue light faded as the dust rose. The metal band of his was replaced by an intimidating looking scythe.
"Edward that's not..." But before she could finish he'd done something that caused the earth to shake and her to stumble. Looking up she gasped in surprise, "Edward!" she chastised, "What on earth are you doing? You don't honestly think I'd ever hurt you, do you?"
Ed wasn’t about to wait around to find out. He’d never raised a hand to this woman before, but it didn’t feel wrong. He didn’t feel anything in response really, just a sense of numbness as he watched her like a hawk would it’s prey. He didn’t respond, but waited for another movement. Words no longer seemed to reach him only the scythe responded, following her.
Sarah backed up a little, “Edward, stop it. Leave the weapon alone, you know I wouldn’t ever harm you. Just come with me and we’ll get some help okay? Let’s find your Aunt”
“Me? I’d be more worried about yourself right now if I was you.” She was the one staring down the blade of a scythe. Ed wasn’t budging. He didn’t want to talk anymore, it was an odd sensation, silencing his thoughts and closing the distance between them, without any hesitation or second thought he shoved the blade through her shoulder. Even though it was a blade made of his own arm, it didn’t feel any different than a heavy broad sword might.
But Sarah wasn’t she was worried about Ed, this wasn’t like him at all and she wanted to get him inside so they could call his Aunt and work out what was going on. Sadly that wasn’t what Ed had in mind and before she could see it coming he’d pushed the blade into her shoulder and she cried out in pain and surprise. When he pulled it back she dropped to her knees and and pressed her hand to the bleeding wound, gasping and shaking as she looked up at him.
That sound of pain didn't stop or phase him in the least. Ed was there, but nobody was home. He watched her buckle down under the strain of injury and the arm strength and only said one thing. "Let's see your soft science heal your body now. " Only when he was satisfied with the discomfort she must have been in did he stop. There was no emotion at all showing on his face though. His eyes were void of any warmth they held before. His arm flicked carelessly to rid of some of the dripping blood that clung to it.
“Edward” Sarah said looking at him with horror and fear as she scooted herself back and away from him as best she could with her hand pressed against her shoulder, blood flowing freely from the wound. She vaguely heard sirens in the distance and wondered if one of the neighbours had called the police or if they were answering another call, she knew which one she was hoping for.
That expression didn't register with him. Ed would have struck again if not for the sound of sirens in the distance. He wasn't an idiot, he didn't stick around to see if they showed up for him or not. He left her in a pile of rubble and didn't look back.
