Status: complete
Rating: PG13
Interviewing someone right off the internet was a new experience for Janet, but her heart had gone out to the girl. Maybe she was a softie (she was), but it felt like the right thing to do, and worse case scenario, it didn’t work out. At least she’d tried.
She waited at the reception desk herself, wearing a very cute business skirt of her own design and nibbling on the end of her pen.
Chloe had changed into her only other outfit after meeting with Logan. Granted, it was the same jeans, but it was a different tank top. She’d put some Febreeze on her toque and put on some perfume. She so wasn’t the fashion type.
Pushing inside, she blinked as she looked around. “Oh, fuck,” she muttered. Yeah, this wasn’t really very Chloe.
Janet liked the hair. She smiled at the girl, giving her a looksover and clucking her tongue a little. She actually had a brand that would look good on someone like Chloe, but she definitely couldn’t be front desk material. The hair was fine, it was clothing that was the problem. “Hello!”
“Heeeey,” Chloe smiled nervously. She didn’t even know where to sit, it was all too damn fancy. “I’m guessing you’ll wanna stick me in the back.”
“You’re cute and you’ve got style, it just needs refinement,” Janet said. She waved a hand for Chloe to follow her. “Luckily it’s just data entry and file management. I’m afraid it’s not long term, but I can pay you well for your time.”
“It’ll help me get on my feet, and I appreciate it.” Chloe slid off her jacket, revealing a tank top and a tattoo that wound up her left arm. “I can do data entry and file management, promise.” Smiling lopsidedly at Janet, she wondered if the woman had a mean bone in her body.
Janet did, but it only came out to those who deserved it most of the time. She took a look at the tattoo. “That’s pretty. Does it mean anything or is it just art?”
“Just art. A friend drew it.” Chloe bit the inside of her cheek to keep from getting overly sentimental about Rachel.
“The best kind of art. I have one, but I’m not going to say where.” Janet led Chloe into the elevator and from there up into the office. The entire place was furnished in a way that defined the words chic, hip and cool. A lot of open space, abstract paintings and sculptures, and a fantastic view out floor to ceiling windows.
The room she took Chloe to was fairly small, though it still had a nice window. There were piles of folders and documents, and a computer. She smiled sheepishly. “It would be a lot of work.”
“Oh, man.” Chloe blinked when she saw the folders, then chuckled. “Let me guess, you haven’t had time in a while?”
“Not in a long time,” Janet admitted, smiling sheepishly and shrugging her shoulders. “You could come in a couple hours a day for a few weeks?”
“That’d be perfect. And maybe I can buy some stuff here when I finally have a place and enough money to spend on clothes. Saw a jacket out front that’s hella sharp.” Chloe smiled at Janet almost sheepishly. She normally didn’t care what other people thought of her, but hey. Cute lady.
“I’ll make sure you get an employee discount.” Janet winked playfully. “Hella sharp?”
“The black leather one with the buckles.” Chloe shrugged then grinned. “It’d be a good thing to have a nice leather and an everyday one, right?”
“If you do it right, an every day leather can be a nice one, too. I can show you some tricks.” Janet was all about self-education when it came to fashion, and there were affordable ways to look good. She tried very hard to have a line that the average person could afford.
Nodding, Chloe took off her toque. Her blue hair was vibrant because she’d just re-dyed it, but knew it’d fade eventually. “Well, thank you. I’m just thankful you reached out.”
“We both needed help, so I think it evens out,” Janet said, her smile wide and bright. “When do you think you want to start?”
“Now?” Chloe laughed. “I mean, I don’t have anything else to do.”
“Okay then! Let me show you the clock and then you can get started!”
Chloe smiled at Janet before standing. Maybe the OC wouldn’t be as shitty as she’d thought.
