Izzy wanted to say goodbye to Magnus before he headed off to Taiwan and so she’d baked him some goodbye cookies and headed over to his place. She’d been surprised he wasn’t over at the Institute but then she guessed he’d need to pack more than what he kept in Alec’s room.
Walking up the path she pressed the buzzer and waited for him to let her in. It had been horrible news to receive and she wanted to make sure he was okay before he left.
Magnus was still a little in shock about his grandmother. While it was true that she had been old, for one reason or another one didn’t usually think that there would be a day when their grandparent or even parents wouldn’t be there anymore. In Magnus’ case, his grandmother’s death had suddenly reminded him of the fact that it was very likely that he was now immortal. And if he was immortal then there would come a day when everyone he loved would be gone and he’d still be around looking as he did now. And the part that made it all worse was that he had no way of knowing if he was actually immortal or not. The only way to really find out would be to wait a couple years to see if he’d age.
He could now fully understand Alec’s fears in the dreams. He’d yet to say anything to Alec about his fears, because there was simply so much going on. When he got back from Taiwan he’d make a point to talk to his boyfriend.
Hearing the doorbell, Magnus walked through the house, smiling when he saw Isabelle on his doorstep, “Come in. What brings you here?”
“I just wanted to come and see if you were alright and bring you baked goods” she told him holding up the little basket of goodies she’d made. “And I wanted to see you before you left” Izzy already thought of Magnus as her brother-in-law and pretty much treated him as such.
Magnus hadn’t really told anyone about his grandmother other than Alec and he hadn’t even been thinking about telling anyone else that he was leaving for Taiwan because he had so much he needed to do before he portaled over there, but when he’d been at the Institute the morning after, of course Izzy had inquired as to when he had come over since it had been in the middle of the night and he’d told her, “Thank you. I appreciate it. Come in.” He moved aside to allow Izzy to enter the house.
Izzy smiled as she entered the house, she hadn’t been prying just curious and she was glad Magnus didn’t seem to mind her dropping by. “You’re welcome. How are you feeling?” she asked him, she didn’t know much about Magnus’ family, he’d never really mentioned them much before.
Magnus led the way into the kitchen once Izzy was inside, “Want something to drink?” He shooed Chairman Meow off the counter so that Izzy could set down the basket of goodies she’d brought him, “I’m hanging in there. I hadn’t seen my grandmother in a couple of years. Not since the last time I was in Taiwan so part of me obviously feels bad about not seeing her recently, considering I could have just portalled over there.” Over the last year Magnus had taken Alec numerous places, but he hadn’t thought to go visit his family.
“Sure” she nodded setting down the basket and then fussing the chairman while she listened to Magnus. “You shouldn’t feel bad. I think part of us just always expects family to be there you know? So it’s not always the first thing we think of”
Magnus listened as he got a drink for Izzy and nodded as he set it down on the counter in front of her, "I know. I can't help it though." He ran a hand through his thick, black hair which was rather messy at the moment since he hadn't spent any time that morning doing anything to it.
Izzy moved to hug him, “You’re a good person Magnus, one of the best” she told him, “Just try not to feel too bad okay?” He really was one of the nicest people she knew and she didn’t want him beating himself up for something which really wasn’t in his control.
Magnus accepted the hug and returned it, “Thanks, Isabelle.” He appreciated the kind words, but it wasn’t likely that they would be instantaneous. Because not only did he feel guilty about not having seen his grandmother in some time, but now he was beginning to think more about the whole immortality thing and how this would become a common occurrence if he was indeed immoral. “I’ll try.”
She didn’t expect her words to work miraculously or maybe even at all but she just wanted him to know she was there for him and cared about him. He meant a lot to all of them, most to Alec of course, and was part of their family. His immortality hadn’t even occurred to her.
“I told Alexander that he could stay here if he wants, while I’m gone.” Magnus said, leaning against the counter as he watched Izzy, “I’m sure he wouldn’t mind some company, if your schedules sync up.” Sure, Alec and Izzy lived together already, but Magnus also knew how much Alec would worry about him while he was gone and he didn’t want him to worry alone.
“I’ll make sure he isn’t pining away on his own” she promised, as long as she was around she’d keep him company. She knew as well as Magnus what Alec was like. He’d probably look all sad and lonely cuddled up with the Chairman and even Izzy’s company wouldn’t really cheer him up until Magnus came home.
“Thank you. He’s lucky to have a sister like you,” Magnus was also lucky to have a friend like Isabelle, “You know that?” Truthfully, Alec and Izzy were lucky to have each other. Magnus had seen them fight demons and various things in the dreams and saw how they got along in the waking world and in a way they were more an extension of each other than Alec and Jace were as Parabatai at times.
"I know. I do remind him sometimes" she grinned though she was very touched. Behind her bravado she could be as unsure as anybody else but moments like this reassured her. It was nice. She knew Alec loved her and they did work well together but it was good hearing it.
Magnus laughed and ate a cookie from the goodie basket that Izzy brought him, “I’m sure he’s grateful for that.” Being an only child, Magnus had often wondered what it’d be like to have a brother or sister and now seeing the way Alec and Isabelle were with each other, he had a pretty good idea of how a perfect sibling pairing should be and he was glad that they had each other to rely on or lean on in times of need.
