Wanda had made it to the finish line in time to greet Pietro. Having been there to cheer him on at the start line, then managing to make it to a couple of the way stations with high energy goodies and drinks and finally she made it to the finish line to celebrate his race completion. She’d seen him cross the finish line and he was just finishing off talking to the medics and organisers. She had stood bouncing on her toes with a big grin on her face under a tree nearby waiting for him to make his way over to her. At her feet was a picnic she had laid out for him. When she saw he was being spoken to by the organisers, she sat down on the blanket to wait for him.
Pietro was pretty happy with his time for the marathon, it could be improved but it was his first one in America so he was happy. And the organisers seemed happy too, they’d spoken to Pietro and asked if he’d do an interview for their magazine. Paid too, which was a bonus. He’d been cleared by the medics so made his way over to his sister. Flopping down onto the blanket and letting his head rest on her legs. “Hey sis, thanks for coming. You really helped” he smiled up at her.
“You’re more than welcome brother,” Wanda smiled down at him as he reclined against her outstretched legs. “What was your final time then? Were they impressed?” she asked, reaching over and picking the box of strawberries up. She handed one to him and ate one for herself.
“Two hours forty three” he told her, “They were impressed for a first time but I want to shave off at least twenty minutes by next year. They want to do an article with the top twenty people though and I made that, it will be paid too” he told her taking the strawberry with a smile.
“That’s great, well done!” Wanda congratulated him. He seemed happy with his performance and if he was going to receive accolades from it in the form of interviews then his career in marathon running could only be on the up. “So when are they planning on doing this interview? That sounds exciting!” she asked, reaching for a strawberry for herself.
Pietro smiled, “Thanks” he said, the interview would definitely help and be good for his degree too. “Next week sometime. I’ve given them my details, it’s going in their local newsletter and a running magazine. You should come along when I go”
“Two publications?” Wanda shook her head. “You’re going to be famous Pietro!” she teased him slightly, holding a strawberry over his mouth. “This will look very good to the professors at university,” she smiled. “Of course I’ll come if you want me to, but you would be just fine without me.”
Pietro rolled his eyes at her but grinned all the same. "Maybe a little" he laughed. "I am hoping they will like it" he shrugged, "I can go on my own I thought it might be fun that is all" But if she didn't want to go she didn't have to.
“Of course I will go with you! Any chance to celebrate my talented brother’s achievements!” Wanda grinned down at him and ruffled his hair. “I bet you’re already planning your next one, aren’t you,” she ate a strawberry, enjoying the juicy flavours on her tongue. She’d brought a few other things, a quiche, sausage rolls and a small loaf of cake as a treat.
Pietro grinned in response and allowed the hair ruffle to go uncontested before reaching over to grab a sausage roll, “Well” he said, “There is actually a half marathon in Disneyland next month” he told her, “Would you like to cheer me on there?”
“A marathon in Disneyland? Do we get to actually go in to Disneyland too?” Wanda asked excitedly.
Laughing Pietro nodded, “Yes you get to actually go in too. If I finish quickly we can just enjoy the day”
“Are you joking?” Wanda asked in disbelief. They’d not been to Disney in Europe; too busy with studies, travelling and working. Since they moved here, she had been hoping they could go to the famous theme park, but she hadn’t focussed on it. “We can go to Disneyland?” she grinned, sitting up and looking down at him, eyes wide.
“Nope, we can go to Disneyland” he told her, putting the food down as he braced for her either hugging him excitedly or jumping up to bounce. Or maybe even both.
Wanda gave a little excited yelp and reached down to hug him. It was awkward but quick and she sat back up afterwards to retrieve a sausage roll for herself, still bubbling with excitement. “Are you going to be recovered enough for it? I don’t want you to be exhausting yourself,” she told him.
“Pfft” he waved off her concern after returning her hug, “I’ll be fine, you watch I’ll be super speedy. Quicker than anything” he teased picking up his sausage roll once more and munching happily. “If you train you might be ready to join me for next years” he added with a smirk.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be as good as you, but I am more then willing to train with you and cheer you on,” Wanda told him. “Who knows, you may learn some new training techniques in university next year. Or I suppose I should call it college now we are here,” she smiled ruefully. “Oh and I got a dark chocolate and cherry cake made for you,” she smiled proudly.
“You are a good sport, I will not make you run but I do appreciate the support” he told her, knowing that she really hadn’t enjoyed it when she’d run with him before. “I prefer university” it sounded better to him. Now it was Pietro’s turn to hug her, wrapping his arms around her waist, “I have the best sister in the world” he announced.
“No, no, I should run, I should keep fit and healthy and you are a perfect example,” Wanda told him, patting him on the shoulder. “Of course you do! And don’t you forget it,” she grinned. “Do you want some now or have some more savoury things first?” she asked, nodding at the other food she had laid out on the blanket.
“Okay, well then I promise to start off easier on you” Because since working at the gym he’d learnt more about pacing and helping those who were new to exercise. “I would never forget it” he said nudging her before grinning cheekily, “Let’s have cake”
“Thank you, I’d appreciate that,” Wanda smiled at him before poking him in the side. “Well you’ll have to move then so I can cut you a slice,” she told him, putting her hands to his shoulders to try and encourage him somewhat. “I’ve been meaning to ask, have you had some odd Dreams lately?” she asked, turning to pull the cake closer to her.
Pietro sighed like it was such an effort to move but he did because, well, he wanted cake. “You mean like growing up in a fictional war torn country?” he asked her with a sidelong look.
“You Dreamed of Sokovia too?” Wanda stared at him in amazement. “I...how is that possible? We shouldn’t be able to Dream of the same fictional place,” she shook her head and reached for the knife and cut two slices of cake for them. Placing them on throw-away plates, she handed his plate to him and then picked her own up.
“Have you not seen the messages on the net? People have been talking about sharing dreams there too” Pietro told her, taking a bite of cake and humming approval. “It is not possible yet it happens. Like those monsters when we first got here”
“I know, I just put it down to some kind of...mass hysteria,” Wanda shook her head, picking at her cake with no real purpose. “So what else do you remember?” she asked, putting the small piece of cake in her fingers in her mouth. She wasn’t as much of a fan of this type of cake, too bitter for her to eat much, but it was mainly for Pietro anyway.
“Well mass hysteria or not we are now a part of it” He told her, he wasn’t too worried but then he was ridiculously laid back about most things. “We have just volunteered for some kind of experiment” he told her, it had been vague when he woke up so he would no doubt dream that one again. Pietro meanwhile was wolfing down the cake, it was very good and very much to his taste.
“Experiment?” Wanda shook her head, not remembering that part of the Dream. “I don’t remember that part yet. I can only assume we Dream at different rates,” she shrugged. “So long as we stay focussed on school and your marathon training we should be fine, don’t you think?”
"What have you dreamed of?" He asked her, because part of him had hoped they'd dream the same being twins. "I think so” he agreed.
"I have Dreamed of growing up in Sokovia, our house being bombed," Wanda licked her lips and swallowed. Of course they were Dreams but they felt visceral upon waking. "Waiting to be rescued with the unexploded bomb in the rubble with us. Then protesting about the war," she finished with a shake of her head. "Perhaps I am just a slow Dreamer," she joked with a little smile and shrug. Although maybe Pietro speaking of his Dreams would spur more of hers, who knew.
He tugged her close in unspoken understanding, they were dreams but they still hurt. “You are not that far behind, I only had my most recent one the other night” he told her with a smile.
Wanda laughed as he hugged her. It amused her that he had picked up on her unease enough to stop him eating his cake. Very little got between her brother and food, pretty much only exercise. “With experimentation to look forward to, I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not,” she gave him an unsure smile.
Exercise and his sister were the only things higher on his list than food, exercise because he needed it to balance out the cake and his sister because she was more important than anything. “We’ll be okay, we have to be. Look how awesome we are here, we have to be even cooler in our dreams right?”
Wanda couldn’t help but laugh at that, feeling much lighter already. As long as she had her brother she could survive anything.
