It was sort of a whirlwind. They got Sharon to the hospital, and she gave Leon and Logan a grimace/smile, waved goodbye, and was wheeled off in a wheelchair. Labor and Delivery admitted her, and she had her own room. A couple of hours went by. Sharon was laboring to her favorite music, seeing visitors every once in a while, having dilation checks (ouch)... then the machine to which she was connected started making warning sounds. Then people came in. They brought in a doctor, too, and everyone frowned and shook their heads. The baby was in distress. Time to get the baby out.
They wheeled Sharon in for surgery. The anesthesiologist, Sharon’s new best friend, stood by her head. Veronica sat at her shoulder. A large drape was set up around her so she couldn’t see them cutting her open.
At least the pain was over. That was the important part. Sharon glanced over at Veronica with the funny net over her hair, and winked. Hey, she was still in high spirits.
While Sharon was being wheeled off to surgery Veronica had a brief moment to let everyone in the waiting room know what was going on. Then she quickly changed into scrubs and met Sharon in the OR. Now Sharon was in the middle of the C-section with Veronica at her side.
This wasn’t exactly what Veronica sighed up for, but hey what were friends for? “How are you doing?” she asked Sharon who seemed pretty damn happy. Must be all her the meds she was on and the fact that she was going to meet her daughter soon.
Speaking of meeting her daughter… Veronica decided to glance over the curtain and see if Viv was out yet. Nope. Bad idea. It was a mess over there. Sharon was all opened up, organs all over the place. Veronica quickly turned her head away looking back at Sharon’s face. “Looks good?” she said as more of a question than a statement and forced a reassuring smile on her face. The last thing she wanted was to freak Sharon out.
Sharon was totally happy. No pain, great meds, she was having a blast. This was super easy. No huffing and puffing, no pushing. No tearing. Sure, she’d have stitches both inside and out (or staples, maybe) but that was a lot better than pushing a baby’s head out through her vagina. Right?
Sharon nodded. “I’m good.” And then Veronica glanced on the other side of the drape. Bad idea, Veronica! She came back looking white as a sheet, and Sharon was torn between nervous and amused.
But before she could ask, there came a baby’s cry. That adorable, newborn cry. Sharon gasped. “Is that her?”
Oh thank god. Viv was out. Veronica still didn’t take another chance looking around the drape though. Once was way more than enough. “No. It’s the baby I had,” she couldn’t help but tease her friend, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Once the baby was all cleaned up and they doctors did whatever tests they needed to do, the nurse handed her to Veronica. Okay, now that Viv wasn’t all slimey Veronica had to admit she was probably the cutest thing Veronica had ever seen. Beat Backup even.
Of course she walked over to Sharon, showing her the little bundle of joy. “She’s cute,” Veronica commented stating the obvious, but she couldn’t exactly come up with any more words at the moment.
The nurse escorted Veronica and Viv out to the waiting area where her dads and everyone else were waiting. And yes Veronica was beaming the whole time. “You ready to meet your daughter?” she asked Aramis, though she wasn’t exactly ready to let go of the precious thing and hand her over to her father.
It was too bad that Porthos wasn’t there to see the moment. Aramis had been a pacing ball of nervous energy for hours, and at some point he was cut off from coffee and limited to herbal tea. With his anxiety starting on the rise again, Porthos had gone to find yet another cup, and maybe something to eat to distract him, and God in Heaven Aramis was going to have to go to the bathroom soon. A thought that was promptly forgotten by the sound of shuffling feet and Veronica’s voice.
“Oh my God.” Aramis took in a sharp breath, feeling the prick of tears already at the corners of his eyes. There was a hesitation before he held out his arms, a grin forming on his face to match Veronica’s. “Is that really her?”
Veronica had to admit, Aramis’ reaction was sweet, but still she couldn’t resist a bit of teasing. “Actually, this is my baby. I had a one minute pregnancy,” she smirked but it didn’t take long before it transformed back to a huge smile. “Of course it’s her,” Veronica added as she set the baby in his arms.
“Meet Viviana,” she left out the last name since she wasn’t exactly sure what last name they were giving her. Once Viv was out of her arms she glanced over at her boyfriend, because well babies made you think of your significant other? But no matter how cute Viv was there was still no way she wanted one herself. She couldn’t get the image of Sharon’s organs out of her mind.
Once they had arrived at the hospital, Logan had taken a backseat to the girls and whatever they had planned for the delivery. He knew that Veronica went to classes and there was breathing, and other than that, he was a little bit lost. At the hospital, he was really lost, and there wasn’t anything to do but wait, so he had taken a seat with the people who were arriving.
He watched Veronica hand the baby to Aramis, who seemed quite happy. He took a quick peek at the wrinkly, pink baby. She was peacefully snuggled in a pink blanket. He smiled at Veronica, who looked happy as well, and then again at the baby. “How is Sharon? She’s okay isn’t she?” His eyes stayed on the baby, very happy for his old partner, toying with the idea of one of his own someday.
The last thing Leon had wanted was for him and Chris to be at the delivery. He was pretty sure he was going to deliver an ulcer or something, and while Chris at least seemed to be taking everything in stride - sitting quietly, swinging his legs back and forth on his seat, and only crying when Veronica had said they were moving Sharon to the OR (Leon had immediately comforted him, telling him that was totally normal and he shouldn’t stress out about it. Chris trusted Leon, and had stopped crying) - Leon had done a lot of pacing. And then a lot of chain-smoking outside once Sharon had been moved.
When the baby came out, Leon first looked at Veronica’s face and, upon noticing she didn’t seem upset, let out a sigh of relief. He listened for the answer to Logan’s question, but was actually feeling pretty happy. He didn’t particularly like kids other than Chris, and babies creeped him out, but Viv was kind of cute. “Did you want to see her?” he asked Chris, and at the boy’s nod led him up to Aramis.
It had been a surprise to receive a call that Sharon had gone into labor, since Peggy had been at the office. She shoved all her things into her bag and quickly made her way over to the hospital. It was one of the few times she had been in a hospital for a happy reason and settled herself into an armchair as she worked on things while waiting for news. She waited for a moment for the others to get their view of the newest member of her family before going up to tiny Viv and smiling, “Welcome to the world, love.” She gently ran her finger along the girl’s cheek and smiled. Pictures would have to be sent to her parents and Sharon’s when she got a chance, but for now she was just happy to see a healthy baby and know that Sharon wasn’t in danger anymore.
It was about an hour later that Sharon was in her hospital room, still in bed, with the baby in her arms. She was staring down at the little girl--who was sleeping soundly--while Sharon tried to figure out what was going on in her head and her heart. She couldn’t believe it was all over. She had Viv in her arms. She was in awe of this tiny person, and amazed at the whole experience. At the same time Viv owned her whole heart and felt like a complete stranger. They’d tried nursing, which was going to take some work, and the nurse showed Sharon how to change Viv’s diaper. Now they were relaxing. Sharon’s phone was buzzing on the table beside her, but she was ignoring it. Right now was all about the baby.
