The morning rush had past at Baxter’s. Of course the bakery was still busy, but things had calmed down. Caroline could take a five minute break, which she had been dying to do ever since Merlin walked in earlier. She had a favor to ask him.
Caroline made her way over to him, her usual bright smile plastered on her face. “Hey,” she greeted. “Can I get you anything? A refill?” Job first, before asking for favors.
Merlin was meeting Audrey at the bakery to take Ben for the afternoon while she came into work but she was running a little late. Apparently their son had decided to be ill all down his outfit so Audrey was changing him.
Deciding to have a coffee while he waited he was sat in the corner reading a paper, “Oh no I’m fine thanks Caroline” he told her with a smile as he looked up from his paper, “How are you?” he asked.
“No problem, it’s kind of my job,” she said with a laugh before deciding to take the seat across from him. “I’m good,” she replied that birght smile still on her face. “How are you? How’s Ben?” Though she pretty much already knew all about the baby from Audrey. “Actually, how is fatherhood?” That Audrey hadn’t told her about.
Merlin chuckled, “That it is I suppose” he agreed with a smile as she sat down. “I’m well thank you. Ben is wonderful though I have to admit fatherhood has been an eye opener. In a good way though thankfully” he told her, “We’re making sure we take time to do things as a family already”
“That’s great. You and Audrey are amazing parents already,” Caroline had issues when it came to her own father so whenever she saw a dad who was actually being a decent dad she couldn’t help but be happy about it. “I do have a favor to ask you though,” might as well get down to it. Her break wouldn’t last forever.
“Thank you very much” Merlin said, he was trying his best and he planned on being the very best father he could. “Oh? Then please ask away, I’ll help if I can”
“Awhile ago, my friend borrowed my daylight ring and you made a copy of it for her,” it was before she knew Merlin, before she even worked at Baxter’s. “I have another friend, who has an aversion to light. It’s not the same as me, but I was thinking a ring might work. Do you think you could make another?” she kept her voice low just in case there were some non dreamers around.
“Ah yes I remember” Merlin said, he’d been happy to help as he always was. And was glad that it had worked. “Oh, of course. If I can help her then I will, I’m sure even if it doesn’t work we can figure out something which will”
“Really?” she was expecting him to say yes, but her eyes lit up all the same. “Thanks! Do you need to borrow mine again? Because that will have to be at night,” Caroline didn’t exactly like the idea being without her ring. But she would do it, to help Midna.
“Of course” Merlin said, there was no way he’d say no, he had this power here he may as well use it to help those he could. “I will do but it should be brief, you could come over for dinner one evening and I can work on it then. It’ll only be in another room then and you can talk to Audrey and play with Ben while I work on it” he suggested, knowing it would be hard for her.
“Okay,” Caroline agreed. As long as it was dark out she should be fine without her ring for a bit. She just had to get it back before the sun came up. She so did not want to have to have to live in the dark for the rest of eternity. “I can do that, maybe tomorrow?” sooner the better. She was already anxious about not having her ring, she wanted to get this over with.
“Tomorrow would be fine. Honestly don’t worry” he told her, “It’ll all be fine. I’ve done it before I can’t imagine there will be any problem this time around” In fact it would probably be easier this time around and take less time.
“Thank you,” Caroline said again. She really did appreciate it. “I should probably get back to work now,” she wrinkled her nose at that, but really she did love her job. “See you tomorrow,” she said as she got up from the table. “Let me know if you need anything else.”
"You're welcome. Glad I can help" he told her, "I'll let you know I promise" but he wouldn't need anything except the ring. And maybe Audrey to take her mind off being without it for a little while something he was sure his wife could do.
