John unlocked the front door of his house and flipped on the hall lights once they were inside. Assuming Sarah’d follow him through the house, he put the bag of booze on the kitchen counter and fished out a bowl from the cabinet. Grabbing a bag of chips, he decanted them out into said bowl and put it out on the counter before throwing the bag away. Pulling a bottle out, he twisted the lid and handed it over to her before doing the same for himself. “Come on,” he nodded towards the back door, picked up the bowl and led her outside.
Out back were two loungers separated by a table, on which he put the bowl of chips. There wasn’t much light, after all you couldn’t skywatch with a lot of light around and skywatching was one of the things that helped John think. Suffice it to say, he’d been doing it a lot lately. “Have a seat,” he gestured to the second lounger as he settled on his own and took a long pull of beer from the bottle.
Sarah followed John through the house, taking in the decor as she did and then took the beer with a nod of thanks. She liked his home, it wasn’t cluttered with stuff but then he was a guy yet it did have a nice relaxed feel about it. It was definitely a home and not a house.
The back was obviously where he spent a lot of time, understandable with his love of the sky and he had a good setup for star watching. “Thanks” she said settling back, before looking over at him, “So, you wanna share your story?” she asked.
"Not particularly, but that's why we're here isn't it," John looked across at her with a little smile before turning his attention back to his beer. Idly, he picked at the label, his expression turning sad as he did. "I uh...I fell in love with the wrong girl, same old same old," he admitted before taking a swig of his beer.
“We’re here for whatever you like” Sarah told him, she wasn’t going to push but she had a feeling he needed to tell someone. If only to get it all off his chest and out there. “There must be more to it than that, what happened? Did she lead you on?” Sarah asked gently.
“No, no…” John responded with a shake of his head, automatically defending Sharon as was the chivalrous thing to do. “Well I...I think we were both at fault,” he sighed, looking down at the beer bottle in his hands. “I’ve known her for a while now, we went out on a date when she got a new job about a year ago and I kissed her. She said then that she wasn’t looking for anything which was fine and I uh...I backed off. Then next thing I know she’s pregnant with someone else,” he shrugged a little helplessly. “Then the other week, eight months pregnant she came over because her dog, Pete, died. She was upset, we were talking and then she was kissing me. One thing led to another and...well y‘know,” he gave a little embarrassed laugh, cheeks burning a little at the implication of his words. He took a breath and carried on. “It’s my fault, I thought it was the start of something between us, then the other night, well, I think you can guess what she told me,” he told her and took a long drag from his beer.
“Doesn’t sound like your fault to me” Sarah told him, “Sounds like she is a bit of a tease if I’m honest. I mean sure at the start I get the misunderstanding but she came round knowing how you felt and still went to the physical level. Pretty shitty thing to do, especially while pregnant with another guys kid” She wasn’t on the clock so being judgemental was allowed. At least that’s what she thought.
"She's not like that, not really," John defended her. "The woman I know is smart, kind, thoughtful," he said, then sighed as he remembered how badly her actions had made him feel. "I don't know what to think anymore. She's nearly due and she's going to need support and I said we could try and be friends...I don't want to renege on that," he explained. "I just have to try and get over her," he shook his head and shrugged, wishing it were as easy as he'd just said it could be. "What's your advice then? 'fraid I can only pay you in beer and chips right now," he joked.
"No payment needed. And although its sweet and shows what a good guy you are, you need to admit what she did was crappy. Smart and kind she may be normally, she still slept with you knowing full well that you were into her and would read something into it. That is a shitty thing to do to a friend" Sarah told him, "But, well, get out there a bit, meet more people, hell sleep with a couple of it helps"
John turned his head to look at her and couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s your professional opinion? Go and get laid?” he chuckled, shaking his head and looking back up at the sky as he tried to stop laughing. He’d been out to the game too long, had probably forgotten how to even chat a girl up.
“Pretty much” she told him with a smirk, “Sometimes it really is as simple as trying to move on. Focus less on her and what might have been and try and find a way back to having fun. A way back to John before he was screwed over by a girl and feelings” He was a good looking guy, he’d barely have to try.
John chuckled again and gave a little shake of his head. “I don’t know if I could do that just yet,” he sighed, a wistful smile on his face as he did. “May need your help in a couple of weeks though. Don’t suppose you’ve got any friends who might be available for a date then?” he asked.
"Anytime" Sarah said, "And please, do you own a mirror? Because I gotta tell you finding you a date is going to be ridiculously easy"
“Yeah, you say that and in college I would have agreed, but these days…” John took a deep breath and sighed. “I’m getting on Sarah, don’t know if you noticed,” he joked, glancing across at her and then taking a drag from his beer.
Sarah looked over at him, “Well you know what they say about wine and age? It just gets finer” she told him, “You’re still hot John, believe me. If you weren’t in such a vulnerable place right now, this night would be going in a very different direction”
John chuckled at that. “How many beers have you had kid? Are you sure the attendant didn’t spike the drinks while I wasn’t lookin’?” he joked, looking over at her as he did. Sarah was attractive, of course, but she was too young for him, surely.
“Kid?” Sarah said looking at him with an incredibly unimpressed look, “I haven’t been a kid for a very long time, believe me. You find it that hard to believe that I’d jump your bones?”
John shook his head at her, still grinning. “Nah, Sarah, you’re young, smart and gorgeous with a bright future. There are so many better options out there than an old Prof like me,” he told her. Yeah, he was feeling pretty pathetic and bruised right now. Not that long ago he probably would have jumped at the chance. Jumped her to be more accurate, and while he probably wouldn’t turn her down if she really pushed the issue, he knew it probably wouldn’t solve anything. Just make him feel worse for using another friend. He swallowed another lot of beer and rested his head back with his eyes closed.
Sarah had no problem with being used, in fact she didn’t believe that would be the case at all. They were both consenting adults and she wouldn’t be going into it with her eyes closed. Deciding to take a chance she moved while his eyes were closed, coming to straddle him in the chair and kiss him before he had a chance to stop her. Pulling back a few moments later she smiled, “You are hot and lovely and smart and you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself”
At the feel of her lips on his, John’s eyes flew open and he made a startled sound, nearly spilling his beer as he jumped in surprise. He recovered from his surprise to attempt kissing her back, the hand not holding his beer rested on her hip, just before she pulled away. He’d deny it later, but he made a small disappointed sound in the back of his throat as he opened his eyes to look up at her. Her warm weight in his lap was grounding. “Not even a little bit?” he joked quietly, still feeling a little stunned by what just happened.
Sarah internally giggled at his reaction, he was cute. But his response made her think that he wouldn't mind her jumping him as much as he'd suggested, that was good because as much as he needed it she did too. Dry spells were the norm when you had a kid, Sarah had come to realise that. "Maybe a little is allowed but right now, lets try feeling something different" she said before kissing him again. Deeper this time as she moved his free hand from her hip to her breast.
Reflexively, his hand squeezed when she placed it on her breast. The beer fell out of his other hand and landed on the grass with a soft thud before flying to her ass to encourage her to rock against him. In that moment, John decided to live for the moment and there was a soft, warm, beautiful woman currently devouring him and wanting him. He marvelled at the turnabout in events, a year of nothing when it came to women and now two had jumped him in as many months. Fuck it, he thought to himself and lost himself in a night of fun under the stars.
