Myrcella had been rather excited when she’d seen the woman’s post online about her latest album, she liked new music recommendations. So she’d brought the first couple of albums and was currently humming along while she went around the store stocking the shelves and tidying up. She was on her own for the afternoon at Much Ado About Books so she’d put the CD on, it had fast become one of her favourites. And she was happily dancing in the stacks while she worked.
Perhaps Luthien was a little bit of a stalker. But she liked the idea of meeting new fans, and she really liked the idea of surprising them. She wore a loose blue sundress, complete with big sunglasses and a flowery hat as she walked through the bookstore, looking around curiously and perusing through some of the titles. She smiled as she heard her own voice through the speakers.
Honestly Myrcella hadn’t thought much more about the singers kind offer to sign a cd, though she would have loved it famous people didn’t tend to just drop in on fans. So when she emerged from a stack and found herself face to face with Luthien, she had to admit she probably gaped like a fish for a moment. “Oh my goodness” she breathed when she finally found her voice.
“Ah, hello.” Luthien’s voice was a little melodic and she had one of those vaguely European accents that came from living in a country that bordered both France and Italy. “It seems I have been found!” Removing her sunglasses and sticking them into her purse, she gave Myrcella a smile. “You must be the lovely Myrcella.”
Myrcella blushed and nodded, “I’m Myrcella” she confirmed staring for another moment before remembering her manners, “Sorry, that was terribly rude of me. It’s a pleasure to meet you” she smiled holding out her hand.
Taking her hand and hoping her inherited radiance wasn’t too much today, she replied. “I’m Luthien. The pleasure is mine.” Luthien Tinuviel, who made gods and devil fluster, greeting a teenager like any normal person. She liked it.
“You’re amazing” she blurted out before blushing, “I mean I got your cd’s. Obviously” she smiled since the music was filling the store, “And you have a lovely voice”
She laughed, letting Myrcella have her hand back. “Thank you. I can admit that I am quite proud of my voice, but do you want to know my secret?”
Myrcella nodded, “I promise I’ll keep it” she promised with a smile.
“The world was sung into being, long ago. It’s why music is the universal language, a way for people to connect without words. Few things give me as great a joy as singing.” She held up four fingers. “It is one of my top four most favourite things. Dancing, my wife and my son are the other three.”
“The world was sung into being” Myrcella repeated, “I love that” Myrcella was a huge fan of fairy tales and incredible stories, her own collection of books being just those kinds so this sounded wonderful to her. “Oh you have a son? How old is he?” she asked, hoping the older woman didn’t mind her questions.
“He’s almost four now,” Luthien answered. She leaned her hip against a shelf as she spoke, and gestured with her hands. “Music is in everything. Words are music, the wind is music, the ocean, the sky. You only need look.”
Myrcella thought that must be a lovely age, starting to engage with stories and, well, the world really. She smiled, “I live by the ocean and I love sitting out in the evening and just listening to it, it really is very beautiful” she admitted.
“You already know then, how it feels.” Luthien smiled at that. Sometimes, she’d meet people, and they were so cut off from the world and its music. They were almost always adults. Children, and teenagers and those still young enough to remember how to listen, those were the people Luthien liked to reach. And perhaps keep them from forgetting how.
Myrcella smiled as she nodded, “I love that feeling” she said, “I’ve always liked water. And the ocean has a special feel to it” Myrcella wasn’t naive but she did retain some of her innocence and childhood views.
“When was the last time you went to the ocean?” Luthien asked. She folded her arms, smiling back at Myrcella. She thought she was adorable, and wanted to keep her.
“Well I live by it so I have it on my doorstep” Myrcella told her, “My boyfriend and I walk our dog along the beach a lot”
“Now that is lovely! It must be rather romantic.” Luthien let her arms drop to her side, though her smile remained light. Her voice was teasing. “Moonlit walks along the beach?”
“It really is. We sit out there often too” Myrcella admitted, her cheeks flushing a little as she nodded, “Those are the best. As long as Dragon doesn’t decide to go for a moonlight swim” she smiled, as she thought of her dog.
“Mmm, that is a romantic scene I can paint in my head. I met someone once, in a forest long ago. I was dancing through the trees, and I suppose the sight enraptured him.” Though she was married to Elphaba, the story of her and Beren was still a romantic one, and she bore no ill will to her dream husband.
"Oh how wonderful. That's incredibly romantic, like a fairy tale" or a Disney version since most fairy tales didn't end happily as people believed. "What happened?" She couldn't help asking.
“My father wasn’t too happy about it. He gave Beren impossible tasks, to earn the right to be my love. Of course, I gave him quite a bit of help behind the scenes.” Beren was strong, but he couldn’t have done any of that alone.
“Oh no that must have been so hard, but at least he had you to help him” Myrcella said, “Did he complete the tasks and become your love officially?”
“Oh, he did. He would not have if I had not set out to help him.” She smiled, her eyes glimmering with mischief and pride. “That is the secret to stories such as these. You cannot always rely upon someone else, not when you can help yourself - and them. Such things should always be...mutual. I was no damsel needing to be saved.” Really, Beren had been.
Myrcella nodded, “I like that. You should work together in all aspects so that your relationship is equal” Surely that was better than having things be uneven. They may do it in different ways but she liked to think she and Jeremy looked out for each other.
“Good. Now...I have some signed things for you. A poster, and a special edition DVD from my last concert. And I brought my favorite pen for the cds you bought.” It was time to get down to business, at least briefly. She was sure she was encroaching on working time!
“Oh my goodness” Myrcella exclaimed, “Thank you so much. That is very kind of you” Myrcella was so touched by the thought, she retrieved the CD cases and couldn’t stop smiling as Luthien signed them.
She signed them with a flourish, then carefully handed them back. “It’s nothing. A promise is a promise, and I quite enjoy it most days.” Post concert signings were always a little rough, but she’d stay an hour or two longer if it mean getting to everyone who wanted one. She was still a bit unused to that level of fame.
“Are you going to do a tour with your latest CD?” Myrcella asked her, she’d see if Jeremy wanted to go or maybe a group of friends. It would be a great night she was sure. If Luthien was going to do one of course.
“There’ll be at least one concert here, probably in October, but I’ve been getting pressure to go on tour.” She tucked some hair behind one pointed ear. “That would keep me away from my family though. I want to do a Christmas show as well.”
“Oh of course” Myrcella said, “I can understand why you wouldn’t, I’m sure your fans do too” she added reassuringly. “Oh I bet you sound beautiful singing Christmas songs”
Luthien hummed the first few bars to White Christmas and smiled. “Well if you encourage me, perhaps I shall!”
“I will become your own cheerleader if you like” Myrcella smiled, “I think it would brighten everybody if you did a Christmas show”
“Then it’s decided. I shall do a Christmas show. Thank you, Myrcella.” She held her arm out for a hug. “I should get going.”
Myrcella smiled brightly as she shyly but happily hugged the other woman, “Thank you so much for coming. It was such a pleasure to meet you”
“Oh, no, the pleasure was mine. I shall see you around, no?”Luthien squeezed her, then stepped back. “I’ll let you get to work.” And maybe Myrcella might find herself with two backstage tickets for Luthien’s next concert.
