Veronica had brought home a blanket from the hospital to get Backup used to Viv’s smell. He was a good, well behaved dog, but still Veronica figured it would be a good idea to get him used to Viv’s smell before she arrived.
When Sharon texted that she was leaving the hospital with her mother and the baby Veronica quickly fed Backup before climbing onto the couch, letting him curl up next to her, with his head in her lap, once he was done eating. That would be the easiest way to contain him if he got too excited when Sharon arrived, after all he hadn’t seen her in a few days.
“I’m fine, Mom, really. It’s just time for a nurse and nap,” Sharon’s voice came through the door just before she and her mother came through. Sharon’s mom was carrying the carseat, Sharon was carrying the tiny baby. She was still in her maternity clothes.
A bright, tired smile crossed her face when she saw Veronica and Backup on the sofa. She came closer, cautiously. “Hey, Back Up. Hey, boy. Do you want to meet my daughter?”
Backup perked up the second the door opened. “Backup no,” Veronica said sternly to keep him from jumping. The dog obeyed remaining on the couch, though his head no longer remained in her lap.
“I think that’s a yes,” Veronica replied. “Hey Amanda,” she greeted Sharon’s mom. “Hi Viv,” she said to the baby, using baby voice and everything. God, what was happening to her? At least she didn’t say Vivy Wivy.
Sharon’s mother turned and gave the girls a warm smile and a wave after setting down the carseat and Sharon’s bag. “Hi, Veronica. I’m gonna leave you to it, then.” She looked exhausted from the hospital. “I’ll be back in an hour with dinner.”
Sharon nodded. “Thanks, Mom.” Then she gave Veronica and Backup her full attention.
“Backup, this is Viv.” She moved to sit down beside the pair of them on the sofa. “Isn’t she cute?”
Backup looked at Veronica as if to ask permission. “It’s okay,” she told the dog who then inched closer to Sharon and Viv sniffing the air around Viv. “Good boy,” Veronica told Backup giving him scratches behind his ear as she turned her attention to Sharon. “So, mom how are you doing?”
“I’m exhausted.” Sharon said, watching Backup with a smile on her face as the dog sniffed at the baby’s blankets. “And nursing is freaking hard. But other than that…” She’d just been cut open, disassembled, and then stitched back together and handed a tiny human being. Now she was completely in charge of that other human being--keeping it alive by the power of her breasts alone. It was overwhelming.
“I could really use a shower, too.” Sharon added. “Though it’s hard with the like, incision place or whatever.” She’d have to be really, really careful.
The minute Sharon said the word incision, Veronica instantly had a flashback to her autopsy C-section. Gross.
“You want me to watch Viv so you can shower?” Did she really just offer that? What the hell was she supposed to do with a baby?
“Would you?” Sharon asked, perking up considerably at the idea. “I mean, she’ll probably just sleep the whole time. I’ll only take about ten minutes.” She stood to move to her bedroom, bringing the baby along with her. “I’ll just put her in her bassinet. You can just… make sure she doesn’t die?”
Well now that she offered she couldn’t exactly take it back, could she? “Make sure she doesn’t die. Got it.” She was pretty sure she could handle that. “Backup, down,” once Backup was off her lap she followed Sharon into her bedroom. Fully prepared to stare at Viv the whole time Sharon was in the shower. No way was this baby dying on her watch.
