So far it seemed like just another night out with her boyfriend, which was quite refreshing. The last couple weeks had been a bit of a blur of excitement for them. It had started with him asking her to move in with him, then there was a lot of packing and tears with her roommate, but she was now a part of his everyday life. That had brought about some interesting conversation when they went to visit his parents for the Fourth of July and that just seemed to secure her place as his girlfriend. The first meeting had gone well, but this one had gone even better because she wasn’t a complete surprise anymore, although his father was still slightly suspicious of her.
However, tonight was just a perfect night for them to go out and enjoy each other’s company. Tom had picked a fancy restaurant, like usual, and she had found a lovely ballerina dress to wear for the occassion. They were seated quickly and she was currently studying the menu across from him before she glanced over and noticed something different about his expression at that moment.
Tom was a little paranoid. A little freaked out. He was sweating, which was completely unusual. He’d decided that tonight was going to be the night, and that ring he’d been carrying around in his pocket would finally fit on her finger. That is, if she wanted it. They’d been sleeping in the same bed every night for weeks now, and they were house hunting, and… it just seemed the next, natural step.
He wanted her to belong to him. And, more importantly, he wanted to belong to her.
He was staring at her when Rose looked up and caught his eye. For a split second he took on the look of a deer caught in headlights, then he cleared his throat and turned his eyes down to his menu. “What looks good?”
Oh he was totally up to something. She could tell by that split second deer in the headlights look that passed over his face. She wasn’t completely sure what was going on, but something was certainly happening. Maybe he had put a payment down on a house without discussing it with her first, which she wouldn’t be horribly upset about, but the only she could do was shoot him an amused smile and glance back down at her menu.
“I’m really in the mood for a steak, which seems kind of silly, but I’ve been craving one. And their garlic mashed potatoes are to die for, so I may end up going with that. What are you thinking about?” Rose was a pretty easy girl to please with food because she had simplistic tastes, but she wasn’t afraid to try new things. Today was a day where all she wanted was a big slab of meat and some potatoes.
“The same.” Tom said, and closed his menu. Now that was out of the way… crap. He didn’t have anything to pretend to be doing. He turned his eyes back up to her, setting the menu aside. There was a pause as he gazed lovingly at her face. “...did I tell you how beautiful you look tonight?”
He said that kind of thing to her multiple times, but she always blushed when she heard it from him, especially with that kind of tone in his voice. “You haven’t, but you know I love hearing it from you. Thank you. You look quite handsome,” she couldn’t help but smile as she lifted the wine glass to her lips and took a sip, “So, any more houses that we need to look at? I’m still in love with the one that is actually a beachfront property. I know you want to be on the beach, so I don’t know if we’ll get much better than that.”
“No, I was going to talk to you about that.” Tom lifted his own wine glass, deciding he needed a little liquid courage. But it wasn’t exactly appropriate to do shots before dinner, so he’d have to settle for some wine. He sipped, then set it back down again. “I want to make an offer on that property. The one we both liked so much.” He said, settling back in his chair. This felt more like talking about business, and that he could do without the fear creeping back in.
“Really?” her face brightened at the idea of that actually happening. It seemed to be moving incredibly quick for the two of them, but Tom seemed like he had wanted to purchase a house for a while now. It just fell to her that she got to help put some input into it since she was dating him at the moment, “Go for it. It’s such a lovely place. I mean, it doesn’t have a lighthouse, but you can always build one.” There was a playful smirk as she said that and took another sip of her wine.
Tom chuckled at that. He could have one built if he wanted to. Or maybe he could put in a small one. Half size or quarter size, to make his garden extra special. Or maybe he could just let Eddie have the lighthouse and he’d simply have the more amazing house.
He lifted his wine glass and held it up in a toast. “To new adventures in real estate.” To new adventures in everything, really.
Her wine glass was raised and she clinked it against his with a smile, taking another sip, and settling against the back of her chair with a smile, “You are acting like such a mature adult, Tom. I didn’t think I’d be helping someone pick out a house anytime soon.” And she certainly didn’t think she and Tom would be in a real relationship for this long. It seemed like just a passing fling, but he had burrowed into her life and wasn’t going anytime soon. She wasn’t able to say much more because the waitress showed up to take their order.
Tom ordered for himself, but let Rose order for herself. He wasn’t that guy--the kind that would order for his girlfriend even though he knew what she wanted. Actually, he was the kind of guy who would let her order for both of them. What? It didn’t affect this manliness.
“...I need to ask you something,” he added, realizing he wouldn’t be able to eat anything if he didn’t have an answer to his question. “...something really important.” He reached into his pocket and wrapped his hand around the small, fuzzy box.
“Oh,” her face looked a little nervous at his comment because she realized that his face looked concerned, “Sure, go ahead.” Hopefully this wasn’t anything terrible. She took another sip of her wine as she set her napkin aside and leaned forward to listen to his question.
Tom set his wine aside, then moved his napkin to the side, too. He leaned forward and brought one hand across the table to take hold of one of hers. “Rose.” He paused, waiting for her to slip her hand into his. “...that night when you… stained the hell out of my three hundred dollar sheets…” He said, breaking into something of sardonic smirk. “I realized something very, very important.”
Rose couldn’t help but laugh when he brought up the cost of his sheets. That had been a crazy and scary night, but it had shown her that Tom was basically the best boyfriend ever. Not many men would stick around after something like that. Her hand lightly squeezed his and she continued to listen to him. The last comment made her smile a little, “Oh yeah? What’s that?”
Tom’s smile brightened considerably at the sound of her laugh. He turned his hand to lace their fingers together, the other hand emerging from his pocket holding the box. He set it on the table in front of him. “That I can’t live without you.”
It was almost like all of the sound left the room and her head was spinning. A bit of tunnel vision was happening and Rose honestly couldn’t believe her eyes at real. Was this truly happening? Tom Prince wanted to settle into marriage and he wanted to do it with her? She could feel tears forming in her eyes as she lifted her free hand to cover her mouth as she turned her eyes to him, “Tom…oh my god.”
He fumbled with the box for a moment, then finally got it open one handed. Inside was a beautiful ring. He slid the box forward. “Rose.” He cleared his throat, glancing from the ring back up to her face again. “Will you… marry me?”
It was taking sheer willpower to not hyperventilate at this moment, so when she finally spoke her voice was thick with emotion, “Tom, oh yes. Yes, of course.” She couldn’t believe this moment was actually happening and tears finally did begin to fall as she nodded her head and her took her hand out of his so that she could hold her hands out to him. They were shaking and she couldn’t help but laugh a little, “You’re making me cry, I can’t believe this is happening.”
“Don’t cry!” Tom gave a little laugh. He stretched his fingers once hers weren’t laced with his again, and then took the ring out of the box to slip it onto her finger.
Some of the other people in the restaurant were turning and staring at them now, and one guy started to clap. Others started to tink silverware against water glasses.
Tom leaned across the table to pull her in and steal a kiss.
He was not going to get away with a short kiss either. She cupped his cheek and continued the kiss for a few moments longer. They just got engaged! She was going to kiss him silly the moment they got out of this place. When she finally broke the kiss she couldn’t help but laugh and shook her head, “I can’t believe I didn’t figure out this was what you were up to. You seemed so distracted. I love you so much.”
Kisses like that made Tom think naughty thoughts. He found his heart was thundering in his chest--three sizes bigger now, after she agreed to his proposal--and his pants were a little tighter now as he sat back down again in his chair. "I love you, too." He said, still holding her hand. They settled in their seats again and he ran his thumb over the back of her fingers.
"We should get out of here." Forget that they just ordered food…
It seemed quite surreal as she sat there looking down at the ring on her finger. She raised her eyes and noticed that look in his eyes that he got when he wanted to ditch all plans and spend the night at home. She couldn’t help but chuckle a little at his next comment because she had read his look right, “We just ordered. You can ask for it to go if you wanted to and then we can head out of here.”
“We’ll get the food to go.” Tom lifted a hand to flag down a server, and asked for their orders to go. “Then we can go home and celebrate properly.” He gave Rose a warm smile. Then it turned a little suggestive. He raised one eyebrow.
"You are incorrigible," Rose pointed out to him with a laugh. It was something she did enjoy about him and their relationship. It was unexpected that he had finally decided to settle down with just her, but she was so incredibly happy that it happened. The waitress agreed to package up their meals and congratulated them on their engagement.
