With Sharon’s due date only a few weeks away Veronica was spending as much time at home as possible. She wanted to be there for whatever her friend needed. If only Sharon was there when she got home, Veronica wasn’t exactly sure where she was but if Veronica had to guess she would go with at the store getting whatever bizarre food she was craving. So it was just Veronica and Backup for now.
She was in the process of pouring food into her dog’s bowl when there was a knock at the door. “Coming,” she called out as she made her way to the door.
“Hey,” she greeted Aramis once the door was open. “I didn’t know you were coming over. Sharon’s not here right now, but I’m sure she’ll be back soon if you want to wait.”
A few weeks away had happened quickly. Before the new year, Aramis had felt like it would be forever until the baby came, but apparently even forever didn’t last long. He felt useless, too, which did nothing to curb his building nervousness. Aramis decided to do the next best thing, which was take his stress baking and donate it to Sharon’s household.
Armed with a tray of cookies and small cakes, Aramis knocked on the door, smiling when he was greeted by Veronica.
“Oh - Well. That’s all right. I just had an excess of food and thought I’d share the spoils,” he said. He held up the tray to prove his point. “If you want them.”
Veronica eyed the tray of goodies, she had to admit they looked delicious. She wasn’t a very good cook herself, so having freshly baked goods in the apartment was definitely a treat. Even if they were technically for Sharon.
“That’s quite the excess,” Veronica said accepting the tray from him. He seemed a little off, anxious maybe. Not that she blamed him. Viv was due soon, it was a little nerve wracking, even for Veronica. “You sure don’t want to come in?” she stepped aside to allow him in anyway.
“I know, I have a very real problem and no one discourages it,” was Aramis’s reply about the sweets. It was easier to put all his excess energy into that rather than up his already dire chain smoking. But he smiled at her offer and shrugged.
“Oh, sure, it’s not as if I have anywhere else to be.” He stepped inside, looking around. “So I hear all of the baby things have been put together and set up?”
“Probably for selfish reasons. Can’t say I blame them.” Veronica said walking further into the apartment. She nodded her head toward the couch gesturing for Aramis to take a seat before disappearing into the kitchen setting the baked goods down. She stole a cookie off the tray for herself before making her way back out.
“Yeah, I somehow convinced Logan to help out,” how she had no idea considering he wasn’t all that happy with her. He was friends with Sharon too though, so that was probably the reason. “It’s a little insane. I feel like Sharon was just telling me she’s pregnant and now it’s almost the due date. Have you gotten the nursery put together yet?” She was pretty sure Sharon mentioned he and Porthos were setting up a nursery at their place.
“It’s never a bad thing to sucker friends into doing all the hard work.” Aramis gave Veronica an amused smile, followed quickly by an exasperated sort of sigh.
“Yeah, ours is all finished. We did it in pastel yellow rather than anything traditionally girly. Painstakingly painted a mural of a tree and flowers on the wall. The things we do for babies, right?” He couldn’t help but smile. As nerve-wracking and stress-inducing as it all was, it was still incredibly exciting. “But we sacrified our guest room for it, so we’ve decided to renovate our basement into a family area and guest area. Porthos managed to convince a friend of his to help because I’m not sure I’d have been any use at all.”
“It sounds like you went all out. I’m sure Viv will love it. You know when she’s old enough to really see the mural and all that.” Still though it sounded like she had a great room over there. Definitely beat the crib in Sharon’s room.
“Sounds like you guys have everything in order,” she gave him a reassuring smile. “You ready for the whole being a dad thing? I don’t know if I’m ready to be an aunt,” she admitted and she wasn’t even officially an aunt. No blood relation at least, but she was close enough. This baby was going to be born into a family full of people who cared about her, even if it wasn’t exactly the most traditional family.
“I’m something of a perfectionist,” Aramis admitted, as if it was some great confession. “And I’m a nervous wreck, deep down. I think if things weren’t so in order I’d be having a full break down.” He gave Veronica an amused look, and a laugh, but there was more truth in it that he’d care to think about.
“I am. As ready as I can be. I’ve always wanted to be one, but I never was sure it would happen. I’m happy for it, in any case, and that this whole situation is working out so well.” He was waiting for the other shoe to drop, but in the meantime, he’d tried to enjoy it. “It’s going to be crazy.”
“I think it’s normal. To be nervous,” Veronica reassured him. “Let’s avoid the breakdowns though. At least while you’re with me. Save that for Prothos,” she was kidding. Obviously. Avoiding breakdowns all together was best. But really if he was going to have one, she wanted to be nowhere near it. Reassuring a soon-to-be-father was one thing. But breakdowns? She couldn’t deal with that.
“Well, you’ve had a few months to get used to the idea. Like nine almost,” crazy how long it had been already. “But the closer it gets, the more real it gets. I get it,” Sharon’s growing stomach was impossible to ignore now. “The whole situation, is pretty crazy. But I don’t think any baby will be loved more than Viv.”
Aramis let out of a laugh. It felt alarmingly good to shrug off his tension for a brief moment. Surrounded by things that only reminded him of all the amazing stuff that was about to happen, that eased his mind.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” He raised his eyebrows. “She’ll be a bright star in the midst of her massive family. You’d think my mother was having her first grandchild all over again, the way she goes on about.”
“You’re an uncle?” Learn something new everyday. Though she really didn’t know all that much about Aramis to begin with. She probably should know more considering he was having a baby with her best friend and soon enough they would all be connected through Viv.
“It is exciting though. I’ve never been a sort of aunt before. Or a real aunt for that matter. The closest I’ve got is Backup,” as if on cue her dog lifted his head and walked over to her. “If only kids were this obedient,” she joked.
“I am. There are … Eight, in total, nieces and nephews. Plus a step-nephew and one of my sisters is due in a few months.” Aramis paused to count everything again, then give Veronica an amused look. “We’re a nice, big Catholic family.”
Then he snorted out a laugh. His hand went out to the dog, to see if he was accepted as worthy of giving pets. “In my experience, they definitely are not. Especially, I think, a child from Sharon and I. She’s going to be a stubborn, fiery little thing.”
“So you’re used to babies then.” Way to state the obvious, Veronica. “Only child,” she informed him. “So Viv will probably be the closest thing I get to a neice.” Good enough for her though. Sharon had been her best friend for like ten years now, the girl was practically her sister.
Backup, of course, let Aramis pet him, wagging his tail happily. “Yeah, she’s gonna be a little spitfire. You two are going to have your hands full with that one. Or well I guess three if you count Porthos. Or like a million if you count everyone else,” she gave another laugh. “But really, you guys will do great.”
“Very used to them,” he agreed. “But it’s probably going to be a lot different with my own. Thank God I’ve got Sharon and everyone else.” Aramis flashed Veronica a smile. “Let’s eat some cookies and try to talk about things not babies.” Since that was going to be all they’d talk about soon enough.
