Some missing pieces began to fill in as Kitty slept fitfully. They'd settled into a section with no exit except for Kitty's powers. Dangerous should she be unable to phase, but necessary. Mai had been getting more and more nauseous. Maybe it was the stress, or the sway of the ship, or both. But Kitty didn't know which it might be. Her skin was really wan, and feverish to the touch. She'd complained about feeling weak and dizzy before they'd settled down. It took awhile for the two of them to drift off.
Finally her memories filled in about Kurt Wagner. How she'd feared his devilish appearance, and how the Morlocks helped her realize that looks weren't always the determinator as to a person's heart. She'd grown to respect and admire the man. Part of her loved him, in that way where both knew it would be a disaster to progress past friendship.
There were other bits and pieces. How they'd turned to a supervillain to save her life, and how he'd had to work with the Fantastic Four to do so. Her need to heal had led her to the United Kingdom, and it was there that she'd helped pull Brian Braddock from the depths of alcoholism, and there that the bond that became Excalibur was forged.
There were still missing pieces of her time there, and the would gnaw at her later. But she remembered enough. Cross-dimensional travel, Nazis, her first kill. Coming home alone. Losing Brian, and then losing Rachel to bring Brian back.
Three years of her life, and even though it would come to an end, she had the impression that Excalibur, more than the X-men, had been her true family. Even though Logan had a special place in her heart there just wasn't that attachment. And there had been many. From the original five, to those that had joined later. Even Wisdom had been part of the family. Moira and Rahne, Douglock, even Piotr. The X-men had been an army. Excalibur had been a family.
When she woke, she ached for Kurt and Rachel, Brian and Meggan, and she felt so alone. Most of the people she'd been closest to there, weren't here. There was Illyana, and Xi'an. Wisdom too, despite their issues. But that was pretty much it. She wasn't as close to Scott, or Emma or Rahne. Or even Jubilee.
She looked over at Mai, feeling her forehead. She needed to get the woman cooled down, and soon.
