Baxter’s Bakery was one of the places Ezra frequented for a decent cup of coffee and a delicious baked good. He hadn’t gotten into the sparkling latte craze that seemed popular at the establishment, he much preferred his coffee black.
Ezra was enjoying his coffee at a table in the corner, while jotting down some thoughts in his notebook (he was constantly coming up with ideas for his crime novel), when he noticed a red head who looked awfully familiar. He was fairly certain she was a student. Ah yes, not one of his, but she had come to visit him in his office. Talking about minoring in English if he remembered correctly.
Anna came into the cafe. She’d been feeling really down after her last email from Hans. He was being so kind and keeping in touch, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was brushing her off. Maybe this really was the end? No, Anna, don’t think like that. He wasn’t going to be gone forever. This was temporary.
Still. She felt nauseated a lot lately. Or maybe that was the withdrawl from the energy drinks. Ugh.
Anna stepped into line and ordered something with a lot of sugar and a lot of caffeine. Extra Caramel sauce on top.
Clearly the girl liked her drinks sweet, obvious by the amount of sugar that actually went into her order and then extra caramel sauce on top? Ezra shook his head. What was wrong with just a basic decent cup of coffee? No need for all the fancy drinks if you asked him.
Ezra went back to writing in his notebook finishing jotting down his thoughts before glancing back up again. The redhead was still there now with drink in hand, she didn’t seem quite as peppy as he remembered her from before. Maybe even a little down. Interesting.
Anna accepted the drink from the Barista without giving her normal, chirpy, happy “thank you!” Just a more solemn “thanks” before she took the lid off to practically stuff her face into the caramel sauce and whipped cream. Drowning her sorrows in enough sugar to give a rhino diabetes.
Ezra raised a brow as he watched her practically inhale her drink. “You do know actual coffee tastes just fine, right? It’s quite good,” he couldn’t help but comment. Even raised his plain old drink for emphasis taking a long sip.
“What?” Anna asked, turning toward the sound of the voice. She recognized him. The Creative Writing professor at UCI. Her cheeks flushed a little. “...um… yes? I like it sweet, though. I need sweet today.”
Once again Ezra found himself shaking his head. Kids today. Though it wasn’t that long ago that he was in college himself. “You don’t sound too sure,” he gave her a smile though, looked like she could use one. “Don’t you go to UC Irvine?”
Anna blushed deeply. He recognized her? Really?? “Yes, I do.” She said, and the smile on his face made her smile in return. A small one. “And you’re professor Fitz. I came to see you once in your office.”
“I thought so. Did you decide if you want to add an English minor?” he gestured to the empty seat at his table inviting her to join him.
“I think so…” Anna paused for one brief moment of hesitation, then moved over to take the seat opposite him at the table. “It just sounds like a lot of fun. I was really sick as a kid, so I spent a lot of time reading, and writing, and looking at pictures in books and the like. That’s where the Art history comes in. But I did a lot of reading and writing, too. So I think it’d be fun.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” being sick wasn’t fun in general. It sounded like she was for awhile, he wouldn’t wish that on anyone. “But there is nothing like getting lost in a story. Whether it is through reading or writing your own. I suppose artwork can work too, but there is nothing like a good piece of literature,” he gave her another smile pleased she had chosen to join him. “So I might have you in some of my classes next semester then?”
“I agree.” Anna said, breaking into one of those grins that simply lit up a room. She lifted her cup to sip from the straw. In retrospect, it wasn’t a very mature beverage, was it? The kind with sparkling milk and so much sugar and caramel that it probably didn’t technically classify as coffee. But whatver.
“I think so,” Anna added, a little shyly. “I’ve got to check it out and see if it’s for me. Creative writing, that is.”
No it wasn’t the most mature beverage. It was certainly not something Ezra would ever be caught dead drinking himself. But it somehow suited Anna.
“I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. Creative writing should be for everyone,” he took another sip of his black coffee, from a mug. No fancy stuff. “I look forward to seeing you in my class.”
“I look forward to taking it.” Anna said, giving him a warm but also shy smile. She jumped a little when her phone went off, and pulled it from her pocket to check the message. “Oh, shit, that’s my sister, I gotta go.” She said, and stood. “It was nice seeing you, Professor Fitz.”
“You too. See you around Anna,” and just like that he went back to his now almost finished coffee and jotting down ideas in his notebook.
