What: After telling his parents about being engaged
When: 6/21
Where: Peeta’s parents’ house, the car
Warnings: Swearing and sap!
Status: Complete!
Things had gone surprisingly well. Alyssa couldn’t help but blush the entire time they were at Peeta’s parents’ house, which gave things away from the get go. But his parents had seemed pleased, and she was pretty sure they liked her. At the very least, they didn’t hate her, so that was a good thing.
They were in the car, and Alyssa reached out to squeeze Peeta’s hand. “That went pretty well, don’t you think?”
His parents had taken the news well and didn’t seem quite as surprised as he expected them to be. But they knew by now that he had been changed by his time in the military and wasn’t the type to just sit around and let things go idly by. When he saw something he wanted then he made his intentions known and went after it. He knew he wanted to marry Alyssa, so why not tell her already and they can take their time before getting married? It was going well so far.
The squeeze was returned before he leaned over to press his lips against her temple, “It did, you’re amazing for going through that. Probably not a conversation you expected to have anytime soon, but I’m glad they like you.”
“To be fair, I didn’t expect to be engaged right now. But I’m very glad I am. I don’t know, I think part of it is that I’m not very good at being part of a family.” She’d never been close to her mother, and she wouldn’t have been able to pick her father out of a lineup. No siblings left her not very good at family gatherings. But she genuinely liked the Mellarks, and she was glad to be a part of their family at some point in the future.
“Life is more about the unexpected, which is far more fun. And I think you’re still learning about being part of a family,” he answered her with a patient smile, “You’ve got more than enough time to learn about it. I’m going to make sure you come to every stupid family function that we have. That way you can figure out early on if you hate this and you want to run away from me.” He didn’t think she would want to do that, but better to let her know ahead of time what she was in for. He needed to warm her up before they got to a massive family reunion in the future.
“How many stupid family functions do you have per year?” Alyssa laughed, raising his knuckles to her lips. “I was still sort of getting used to not being alone on Christmas.” She’d normally just stayed at school or in a hotel if they closed the dorms.
“Quite a few. You’ve got Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, any kind of bank holiday my parents will throw a party, birthdays, family reunions, Thanksgiving, Christmas,” Peeta couldn’t help but list them off with a growing smile. Okay, so his family liked a excuse to get together, but that was a good thing, right? It would work well for Alyssa because she would be able to get used to see them all the time. Hopefully his parents would like their future daughter-in-law, and if not? Peeta honestly wouldn’t care and marry her no matter what.
“Oh my goodness,” Alyssa laughed. “Isn’t Father’s Day coming up soon?” She blinked. “Oh, bugger, I should start shopping for a gift soon, eh?” Peeta had probably already gotten one for his father. She looked down at the ring on her finger, still unable to keep smiling when she saw it. “I still can’t believe you asked. I mean, I’m pleased, I just couldn’t have expected it.”
“You don’t have to buy him anything, don’t worry. You’re still new and we’re getting to that point where I can just add your name to the card and we’re set,” Peeta pointed out with a laugh before catching her smiling out of the corner of his eyes. A small blush tinted his cheeks when she commented about him asking and he was in total agreement, “It was very spontaneous, with barely any planning, don’t fret about that part. But I’m very glad you agreed to it.”
“Oh, we are? Well, that’s good. I don’t know him yet, so he’d have ended up with a fruit basket. Or meat or something.” There were steak of the month clubs, she was sure. It did her heart good to know that Peeta was as impulsive as she was. Alyssa was very practical, but she tended to leap into things emotionally. Logan had been sudden, as had Damian moving in with her and her mother. Kitty moving in hadn’t gotten a second thought. Alyssa just tended to follow her heart.
“I do have to admit that you can never go wrong with giving my dad a meat basket. But he’s a professional chef, so I would maybe avoid anything having to do with food, unless it’s a utensil,” Peeta and his brothers had learned that growing up in their household. Peeta leaned over to kiss her cheek, “Besides, it seems silly to keep just dating when I knew that I wanted to marry you already. Now I’ve just got to convince you that it was a good idea.”
“You don’t have to convince me of anything, I thought it was a good idea when you asked, that’s why I agreed.” Alyssa, mature as ever, stuck her tongue out at Peeta, then giggled. “Meat basket is also just a fun thing to say, as it sounds vaguely lewd.”
“Am I marrying an actual twelve year old? I need to know before I get hauled off to jail,” Peeta teased her as he reached over to playfully attempt to grab her her waist and tickle her a little bit. Maybe not the best move when driving, but he did his best to keep his eyes on the road as he drove. Not his fault that Alyssa was beautiful and his favorite distraction.
“You can check my identification,” Alyssa said. She wiggled out of his grasp, laughing loudly as he tickled her. “It’s not faaaaaair,” she whined. “Not fair that you know I’m ticklish. You’re not as ticklish as I am!” But she was mostly just glad that he was smiling, that the hollows under his eyes had started to fill out again and the dark circles were fading.
“I should wait until you’re twenty-one to marry you so that you can legally drink at your own wedding,” he pointed out to her and then started to laugh as she squirmed away from him. He certainly knew that she was ticklish and he may abuse that knowledge every once and a while. It took a lot to tickle him, “Life isn’t fair and I love how adorable you are when you’re squirming and trying your hardest not to laugh.”
“I’d just sneak in gin like I’ve been doing for the entire time I’ve lived in the States,” she smiled. She was a better drinker than most of the people at her university, if only because she didn’t drink to get drunk. Batting his hands away, Alyssa shook her head. “I’m not adorable, that is blasphemy. You’re the adorable one. Hmm. Alyssa Mellark. That sounds good, yeah?”
“I’m sure we can get everyone to turn a blind eye to underage drinking if we wanted to,” he pointed out with a laugh. He would certainly buy her some champagne for the occasion no matter what. However, that thought was completely shoved away when she announced her new name and he smiled brightly, “You are very adorable, and beautiful, and stunning, and basically the most fantastic girl in the world. And I love you saying Alyssa Mellark.”
“I can just take sips of yours,” she offered. Really, she didn’t think anyone would bust a wedding for underage drinking anyway, unless they let a kid drink or something. But when he smiled at her like that, Alyssa’s eyes grew soft. “Well, thank you for inviting me to be part of your family. I mean that.” It was a big deal to her - not only did he want to live with her the rest of his life, he wanted his family to be hers as well. “I’ve never been a part of a family before. Not really.”
Thankfully they were pulling up to a red light when she said that and he felt the vulnerability in her voice. He reached over to take her face in his hands and leaned forward to kiss her deeply. One eye stayed open to check on the light before he slowly pulled away and looked at her with a tender smile, “There’s no one else I’d rather have join my family. You are amazing and I’m forever thankful that you’re agreeing to live with me for the rest of my life. I’m not a perfect person and I can’t wait for you to experience this kind of family life.”
Whimpering when he kissed her, she figured if worst came to worst, someone would honk to tell them the light was green. She kissed him back contentedly, letting her hands tangle in his hair. “Mmm, you’re not perfect, but you’re damn close,” she grinned. Leaning back, she looked at him, absolutely content in everything in her life that had brought her to that moment. “God, we’re insufferable, aren’t we? We’re that annoyingly happy couple everyone secretly wants to stab.”
“We are totally insufferable, but that’s only to people who are haters. We are happy and that is all that matters. We don’t act like this in front of everyone else because we don’t need to,” he pointed out to her as he moved his attention back to driving as the light turned green. He loved being able to act like this with her and then just be happy around her in front of other people. They didn’t see the point in shoving their love down other people’s throats, “But honestly, I love you. I always will and I can’t wait to share my life and family with you, Alyssa. You are the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time.”
“I’m glad. You deserve good things. Your dreams make me so angry because you just don’t deserve them. There’s awful people in the world who have nothing but good things happen to them, but you’re sweet and kind and all of this happens to you? Just ... ugh.” She grit her teeth and shook her head.
“I know, dear, I know. But they’re just Dreams...I’m not going to live my life scared of them. The torture is over and I managed to survive, so I think I’m winning in that respect,” he pointed out before reaching over to squeeze her hand gently, “I’m glad that you think so highly of me though. Just continues to show me how much you love me, which is always nice to know.”
“I’m just going to stay by you as much as I can,” Alyssa sighed. She squeezed his hand back, looking out the window. “I’ll be here for you whenever you need me.” Even if he didn’t need to live with her anymore, or wanted to go back to his own flat for a while, Alyssa was going to be there whenever he rang. Teleportation had its advantages.
“I’m a very lucky man,” he commented with a smile as they continued down the road. They were almost home, but he wasn’t sure if he was ready to just sit around, “Anything else you want to do today? Not sure if I want to just head back to your place and just sit around. It seems like it’s too nice of a day out to not spend it having fun.”
“Want to go to the park or something?” Alyssa toed off her heels, wiggling her newly freed toes. They were painted an immaculately perfect red, and she pulled her knees to her chest.
“Sure, I would say the beach, but it’s a little more complicated to get me there,” it involved a lot to take himself and his leg to the ocean. But a park sounded lovely and he chuckled as she wiggled her toes and reached forward to reset the gps to the nearest park, “You’re so cute and tiny.”
“I am not tiny!” Alyssa pouted her lip. She figured that a prosthetic would be hard to handle in sand, and she didn’t want him to have to fuss. They should just have a nice day out. “Oh! Let’s get food and take it to the park, I’m starved.”
“You are and it’s adorable. And food, can do. Want to stop at a grocery store and put together a random assortment?” Peeta questioned with a laugh upon his lips. He leaned over to kiss her temple and ran a finger along the side of her foot to tickle her.
“In ‘N Out?” Alyssa gave Peeta wide, innocent eyes, batting the lashes in an exaggerated way. But then she yelped loudly as she was tickled. “Augh! No, no no!”
“You are so addicted to their burgers. Let’s head over there,” Peeta had quickly learned the location of the all the In ‘N Out burgers around the area thanks to Alyssa and punched it into his GPS to make sure he was following the right route. A grin appeared when she yelped and he continued to tickle her, “Yes, yes, yes!”
“Yeah, their chips are a bit rubbish, but I really do like their burgers.” She wasn’t worried about gaining weight; Rooder metabolisms were high. She did, however, kick her feet a bit when Peeta continued tickling her. “I am going to pee on you,” she panted, still batting at his hands.
“Oh my god, Alyssa, you don’t have to do that to lay your claim on me. I offered to wear a ring,” he drawled as he battled her hands back and laughed. The In ‘N Out was fairly close to where they were, so thankfully he was going to be pulling off into a parking lot soon because he might lose control of the car in this tickle fight.
“I don’t want to!” She tried to lean against the door so that she wouldn’t bat his hand and get them into a wreck, but she was still smiling. Peeta had a way of making her forget her problems.
He couldn't help but snicker as he withdrew his hand and pulled into the lot of the In 'N Out and proceeded to the drive thru. He already knew her order by heart, so it didn't take long before they were waiting at the window, "I love when you smile, by the way. I am also glad you already know I want to marry you because I would probably ask every time you do."
“You are such a romantic,” Alyssa smiled. She leaned over to make out with him since they were stopped, ceasing only when the drive-thru attendant cleared his throat.
"Only around you," he admitted to her before she leaned in for a kiss. He couldn't help but laugh when the attendant cleared his throat. He thanked him and handed the bag over to Alyssa as they drove off and he started laughing more. He punched in his gps for a park and started them on the path, "His face. He was mortified."
“Oh, you mean you don’t do this with Gale? There goes my fanfiction.” She winked at Peeta as she took the bag, smiling to herself. “You know, this is not the first time I’ve traumatized retail workers with snogs, and I doubt it’ll be the last.”
"Well.....ya never know," he teased back with a snort of laughter, "And I am sure it is not, but he still hated us a little bit. At least we are almost to the park and we can make out in front of new people."
Alyssa steepled her fingers like an old timey bad guy. “Another day, another chance to terrify people.”
"Thank God I already know that you are a giant weirdo," he pointed out with a laugh as they made their way to the parking lot by the park. Once he put his car in park he moved to get out and open up her door and help her out of the car.
“You know I’m a weirdy,” Alyssa agreed. “Not only do you know it, you love it.” She always liked how gentlemanly he was, opening her door and helping her out of the car. It was his way of taking care of her, and she liked it. Immediately, she wrapped her arms loosely around his waist and kissed him again. “You know, I’d forsake In N’ Out burgers for you. That’s how much I love you.”
"I do love it. And wait, you would do that for me? That is the most romantic thing you have ever said to me. I am definitely going to need you to marry me," the teasing tone was heavy in his voice as he returned the kiss and twirled her around playfully. When they broke apart he held her hand as they walked to a nice spot to sit and eat.
“I would.” She eeped when he twirled her, then squeezed his hand as they walked toward a picnic bench. She crossed her legs and beamed at him, head on her hand. “I’m just glad you’re feeling better. I love you, you know.”
"I love you too. This is perfection right now. I am so happy to have you around," he comment with a happy smile when he turned his head to look at her. This was what happiness was and he knew that Alyssa would always make him happy and their engagement was the right path to take. Nothing would prevent him from having her in his life and experiencing all he could from life.
