Who:Ruby and Nina
When: Not long after June's full moon
Where: Nina’s house
What: Thank you muffins/cookies
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Nina had wanted to thank those who helped her during the full moon escape and she had decided to start with Ruby, the other woman possibly understood more than anybody else could after all. And she wanted to get to know her better too. It would be nice to have more friends and Gabe and Neal seemed to get along well too. Double dates could maybe be something that would be fun.
She’d gotten some muffins and cookies from Audrey, freshly baked, and ready for her coffee morning get to know you/thanks session with Ruby.
All things considered, Ruby probably should have reached out to Nina when Neal had first mentioned he knew about another werewolf in the area. But between not knowing how different worlds worked in regards to that, and just feeling awkward about it, the brunette had never gotten around to it. So when she had received the invite to go to Nina’s, she had taken it. Because really. Werewolves should stick together, or something.
With the address in her phone, Ruby found herself at Nina’s and took a breath. Really, it wasn’t even that nerve wracking, and goodness knew she needed more friends. She loved her job, she loved making some sort of difference, but she had also noticed that she didn’t make as many connections now that she wasn’t bartending anymore. So a chance to make a new friend, especially one who understood the wolf thing? It was a bit daunting even if she knew it would be good. So she rang the bell and waited.
When the bell went Nina moved to the door, “Hey” she greeted brightly, “Come on in” closing the door once the other woman was inside. “Thanks for coming, I’ve got a selection of naughty things to eat and coffee to go with them” she grinned, “How have you been?” she asked as she led the way to the kitchen/diner.
“Hey.” Smiling, Ruby stepped inside and looked around before following Nina to the kitchen, “Yeah, of course, thanks for inviting me. But naughty things to eat are always appreciated.” Because really, indulging in cookies or muffins or the like every so often was a necessity of life. “I’ve been good, you?”
That was Nina’s philosophy too, there were too many nice things in the world to deny yourself all of them. “Not bad, recovering from the embarrassing episode last full moon” she half joked, “Thank you again for that by the way I am so glad Gabe had people to call on. Ones who understood”
“Well, embarrassment is better to deal with than guilt. But yeah, anytime.” Really, if Ruby could help ensure that no one had to suffer the guilt she did about Peter, she would. Even if she hadn’t known, hadn’t been aware of herself, that guilt would forever follow her. It kept her on guard, ensured that there were always safeguards in place just in case… She lived her life, but she never forgot that lesson.
"Oh yeah, it could have been a lot worse" Nina agreed, she was very very grateful it hadn't been worse than it had been. She didn't know what she would have done if she had hurt anybody. Being a nurse whose job it was to help people she'd feel tremendously guilty for hurting anybody.
Ruby wasn’t a nurse, so she could only imagine how that would work given the whole purpose of being a nurse was to help, to heal. Ruby had been devastated when she had woken from the dream about Peter, because Red had always been so hopeful and optimistic, excited. And then that. It went against that part of her and the whole..eating her true love thing.
“Pretty much. So you can always hold onto that, at least. Okay, maybe not the best thing in the world, just having to accept it could have been worse. But… it wasn’t and that’s good.”
Luckily Nina hadn’t hurt anybody in her own dreams, which she was extremely grateful for. She had tried to find a cure but that had turned out to be a trick to try and essentially dissect her.
“You’re right” Nina nodded, “As hard as it is sometimes there could be a lot worse things we could be stuck with. I just need to keep reminding myself of that” she smiled.
“Well I’m good for that. Optimism is a super power of mine.” Or so the joke was. But Ruby did tend to be good at trying to find the bright side, of keeping positive in the face of badness. Mostly. Okay, that was up for debate, but she could be the optimism cheerleader like no one else when it was called for.
Nina chuckled, “In that case I’m glad we have this time to get to know each other better because sometimes I could do with more optimism” she said, it wasn’t that she was a pessimistic person in fact since Gabe had come along she’d been more and more optimistic but when it came to her condition she wasn’t quite as settled and happy about it as she could be.
“I can definitely help with that.” Ruby knew what it was like to not be settled with the wolf. It was why she would black out, lose control. It was only after she accepted the wolf as part of her, that they were one and she was in control did she no longer worry about the full moon and could just run and enjoy it as opposed to being chained up. She would always insist on the security of both cloak and silver bullets, but that was a precaution. Just in case Orange County messed with her.
