Portia felt terrible, she’d been so wrapped up in making sure things were covered for her trip to Paris that she hadn’t stopped in on Annie for a while to see how the young woman was doing.
So deciding to take some time out she went in search of her friend, lunch in hand for them both to catch up over food. Knocking on the door where Annie worked she smiled, “Hey, two questions are you ready for lunch and can I join you?” she asked holding up the lunch bags.
If Portia had been wrapped up in her planning, Annie hadn’t noticed. Mostly because she tended to not pay attention to those things. That and she kept to herself more often than not and was skittish around most people, so… eating alone or not seeing people often? Not actually that strange for her.
Hearing the knock at the door, the brunette blinked as she looked up from a design she was sketching to see Portia.
“What?” That was then she noticed the time, “I lost track of the time and that would be great. Thanks.” Since really, Annie probably would have worked straight through lunch without noticing.
Portia smiled as Annie looked up from her work, “Great and you’re welcome. I got a little selection of things since I wasn’t sure what you liked. So we can have a little picnic of sorts” she suggested with a smile as she entered the office properly.
“Picnic it is then.” Annie tended to stick with salads more often than not, but she was usually good at figuring out something to eat based on what option she had available to her. Returning the smile, the brunette put aside her work so that they could properly eat without having to worry about messing things up in the process.
Setting out the things on the table, small sandwiches, crisps, and vegetables with dip. As well as a selection of cookies she smiled at Annie, “How are you doing? Working on anything fun?” she asked.
Picking a sandwich that would work and good with the vegetables with dip, Annie shrugged as she took a bite, contemplating the question. There was a lot going on. Helping Johanna and Peeta with shared experiences in the Dreams because of the Capitol. Being confused and feeling off balance because of the wedding dress that had shown up, a constant reminder of a wedding she only dreamt of… Trying to maneuver through all the conflicting feelings and memories and trying to keep her head above water.
“I’m okay. Nothing concrete yet in terms of designs, just preliminary ones. You?”
Portia had been there with the dreams herself, so if Annie had wanted she'd have liked to try and help.
"Preliminary sounds good" she smiled, “I'm sure they're wonderful. I'm great heading off to Paris soon so I'm looking forward to that"
As a general rule, Annie tried not to talk about the Dreams. Or think about them. It was easy to get bogged down with them, the thoughts and fears, the sensation of losing herself. It had taken long enough to get through the torture dreams and find herself again. So while she knew sometimes she should talk about it, she didn’t seek it out. Perhaps if something happened that prompted it, but so far it was just surprise wedding and waiting to see what happened next.
“It is. And that sounds like it will be really fun. Will you get to go off on your own for any of the time? Or will it all be work related?”
Portia wouldn’t push Annie, she knew the dreams were hard to process and that trying to carry on as normal was important. So she would never compromise that for someone else.
“I think I’ve worked out that I’ll have about a day and a half to myself maybe even two days so I’m going to see as much as I can while I’m there” she said with a smile.
Sometimes it felt as though a normal life would never happen. She’d struggled with that long before she came to Orange County, which was probably why she did push so hard to just focus on things like work and anything else normal. To try and keep her head above the water. Some days were harder than others, but that was life.
“That’s good! I mean, if you’re there, you should try to take advantage of the time.” Really, to go to Paris and not get to see anything because you were stuck in a studio or hotel the entire time? That should be considered criminal.
Portia nodded, “I know right? It would have been terrible if I never even got to see the Eiffel Tower” It wasn’t her first time in Paris but it had been a number of years. She was looking forward to it. The city was beautiful and not just because of the fashion it housed.
“It really would be. I’ve never been, didn’t travel much.” Which was fine. Annie always had her swimming and the small community back home. At least before the attack and break, and then the fact everyone walked on eggshells around her. Nor had she travelled since getting to Orange County. That was something she might need to look into. Not that she minded sticking close to home. But sometimes the idea of travelling and seeing different places like the Eiffel Tower or the canals, or whatever? Sometimes that sounded really appeasing.
“Would you like to? I’m sure there could be opportunities if you would” Portia told her, because if Annie continued producing the pieces she was for the movies and television productions the studio worked on then Portia could see no reason why they wouldn’t send her too. Perhaps Portia could request her on the next trip.
“I would, yes. It’s just never been an option before.” And really, Annie did enjoy working at the studio. She was private by nature, but it didn’t seem to require too much of her being known and she just focused on her designs and jewellery making. To do so on a bigger scale was something she had only dreamed about as a child, never saw it as a viable option later on in life.
“I’ll mention it and maybe next time I go somewhere you could come along, I’m sure they’d welcome having more people from our departments knowing how to check costumes and accessories before shipping them over” Portia told her brightly, she’d rather enjoy trips with Annie. Very few people understood how much Portia put into her work but Annie did since she put the same into her designs too.
“Really? I’d appreciate it. I mean, on top of this already.” Because really, it had always just been a hobby for her that she loved. It still seemed surreal that she was even doing this professionally now. The trick was to stay on with the studio, though from the feedback she’d gotten, that didn’t seem to be a problem. “Thank you.”
“You are more than welcome” Portia smiled, “I’m just glad I managed to steal you away to work here before anybody else discovered you”
