Well, that certainly had been something. Typical Orange County nonsense. But seriously, a giant spider? Who wanted to deal with that? Certainly not Ruby. She was content to stay far away from where it had been and instead focus on work, ceremony planning things and life in general. Still, when Mary Margaret had suggested drinks? Of course Ruby would oblige.
Which was how she found herself at a bar with her friend, drinking a blackberry bourbon lemonade. She knew plenty of drinks, how to make them, but it had caught her attention and so that was what she had chosen.
Unlike with the vampires, a giant spider wasn’t something that Mary Margaret could easily take down with her bow and arrows so she had decided to lay low and open the shelter up to anyone who might need a place to stay because of the giant spider. Luckily the spider had been taken care of and after helping with some clean up, Mary Margaret had suggested that her and Ruby go out for drinks.
“I know I’m probably jinxing us, but I really hope we get a break now. First vampires and demons then a giant spider all within a few weeks of each other? We deserve a break.” Mary Margaret took a sip of her drink.
Who would have thought that dealing with vampires was easier than spiders? Yes. Giant spider of doom, but still. Vampires should not be considered the easier of two things to deal with, yet that was the way it had worked out. And the spider was dealt with, so… no need to worry. Until Mary Margaret more or less jinxed them.
“We definitely do. It’s up to seeing if Orange County agrees with us.” Hopefully it would. Because it had been a roller coaster of things happening. Three months of a crime wave. A break with body swapping. Vampires and demons. Spider. All in six months time, not counting the more personalised issues for people.
Mary Margaret nodded and took another sip of her drink, “How about tonight, we don’t talk about any of the crazy stuff and just talk about real stuff. How’s the wedding planning going?” Mary Margaret still found it a little odd that Ruby’s fiance was Henry’s father in the dreams, which made him Emma’s ex in the dreams too.
Not thinking or talking about the insanity of it all was a good thing. Even if it was just for one night. “I can agree to that.” And then asking about the wedding, which was something she always felt awkward about talking about, at least with her concerns given David was in New York, but with everything a bit more settled, legal, ceremony training was less stressful in it’s own way. “It’s going well.”
Taking a sip of her drink, Ruby paused.
“I think I’ve forgotten to officially ask you to be my maid of honour?” Because really, it was just so obvious to her it would be Mary Margaret, awkwardness of Neal being Emma’s ex in the dreams or not.
Mary Margaret hadn’t actually expected Ruby to ask her that question so when she did, Mary Margaret couldn’t help but smile and nod, “Of course. I’d be honored to be your maid of honour, Ruby.” Now this would give them something more to talk about instead of the crazy things that happened in Orange County, “Do you have a date yet? Colors? Tell me all of it.”
Wedding planning certainly did outweigh the crazy. Admittedly, it was crazy in its own right but that was beside the point. Because well, it was something normal and she did understand what Neal had meant, wanting that normal in all the crazy. Now that she wasn’t on eternal panic mode in terms of the legal things, it was a bit easier to breathe, even if planning would forever be terrifying. Still, she smiled brightly as Mary Margaret agreed, that worry she misread things always a voice in the back of her mind.
“December 5th. At least for the ceremony, so vows, rings and everything like that. We’ve actually already done the legal parts.” She was going to need to figure out the paperwork for the name change as well, “But we haven’t solidified colours yet.”
“Wait a minute. The legal parts? Are you telling me that you’re already married?” Mary Margaret didn’t really know much about weddings aside from the stuff that most people knew so when Ruby started talking about legal stuff all she could think was that it meant official things. “Did you get married already and not tell me?”
“Technically? Sorry.” Wincing, Ruby sighed as she stared at her drink. “Just… with how often we’ve pushed our luck in just surviving, I was terrified one of these days, one of us would die and stay dead and just… wanted something official. But having the ceremony, the once in a lifetime experience was also important so we decided to do all the courthouse and document things first and then keep on planning the ceremony with our family,” Since well, their friends were their family, “because that’s just as important.”
Death followed them, and between their lives in the Enchanted Forest, Storybrooke and Orange County? That sensation that anything could happen at any moment? It was there. So she took a drink and shrugged.
“I mean, we did it, and next thing you know, giant spider is here.” Which also explained the lack of saying anything since they were then dealing with another round of crazy.
Mary Margaret’s smile widened and she couldn’t help but get up out of her seat so she could hug Ruby, “That makes complete sense. I’m so happy for you though.” She returned to her seat after hugging her friend, still smiling, “When it comes to true love you shouldn’t wait, because you wouldn’t want to regret it if something happened.” It was definitely a Snow White thing to say, but it was how she felt.
Relieved that Mary Margaret seemed to understand what Ruby had meant about the legal aspects and everything, she returned the hug and smiled as well. True, the initial getting to the compromise had been..interesting.. given Neal had thought she didn’t want to do the planning and that was it, but that had been worked through and it seemed that it was going well. And really, it was quite the Snow White thing to say.
“That was my thinking. I mean, things are just so uncertain to begin with. Add in all of this,” This being Orange County nonsense, that uncertainty was increased. Especially as the latest round of near death experiences wasn’t even tied to Orange County.
“I’d say we have to go out and celebrate, but we’re already out.” Mary Margaret simply couldn’t stop smiling right now, “So, next round is on me.” Of course talking about Ruby being married made her miss David, but how could it not? She was Snow White and he was Prince Charming. They were meant to be together and Mary Margaret kept telling herself that it would happen when it was supposed to happen.
“It was pre-emptive going out to celebrate then.” So what if it had initially been an ‘oh god, we need a break because of all this craziness’, it also worked as celebrating the fact that she was now married in the legal sense. “But thank you.” She did feel bad that David wasn’t there, but she hoped that maybe he could at least come out for the wedding. After all, Neal and Ruby’s New York family was coming as well. But they would have to see on that fact. “Things will work out, they always do.”
It was more for Mary Margaret’s benefit. Ruby had never been meant to have a happily ever after, not in their dreams and she had accepted that. Mary Margaret, Snow White… she did. She and David always found a way to one another. It was how their lives worked.
Mary Margaret was not going to get down over thinking about David, because now was a time to celebrate and she really was very happy for her friend. As far as she was concerned, everyone deserved what her and David had in the dreams. “To you and Neal,” She said, holding her glass out towards Ruby.
Smiling, Ruby held up her glass and clinked it with Mary Margaret’s. Things were good and she was going to hold onto that because goodness knew Orange County liked to throw things at them. Let them have this moment.
